9/19 Feast of Our Lady of La Salette, France (1846)

9/19 Feast of Our Lady of La Salette, France (1846)

Our Lady of La Salette

Mélanie and Maximin, the two children privileged to see Mary in 1846, came from the town of Corps near Grenoble, in a poor part of south-eastern France. Maximin Giraud was eleven years old at the time and Mélanie Calvat fourteen. On Saturday 19 September, they were looking after their employer’s cattle, high up on the pasture above La Salette, a village near Corps, when they saw a wonderful apparition of Mary.

A globe of light opened to reveal a resplendent woman seated on a stone with her head in her hands. The children later described her as very tall and beautiful, wearing a long, white, pearl studded, sleeved dress, and a white shawl, with some sort of tiara or crown on her head. Hanging from her neck was a large crucifix adorned with a small hammer and pincers, with a brilliantly shining figure of Christ on it. The whole effect was as if she was made of light.
Speaking tearfully she told them that unless people repented she would be forced to let go the arm of her son because it had become so heavy. Mary went on to complain that she had to pray ceaselessly to her son for them, but the people still worked on Sundays and blasphemed. She also spoke of coming punishments for these sins, including crop blights and famine. She confided a secret to each of the children, which they were not to divulge, although eventually these secrets were made known to Pope Pius IX.

Finally she asked the children to spread her message before disappearing. When the children returned home they told their story, an account of which was taken down in writing the next day. They faced much opposition in making known Mary’s message, but they maintained their story with resolution. The local Bishop too faced quite a degree of opposition in investigating the apparition, and it was only after four years, and having set up two commissions of enquiry, that Mgr de Bruillard, as bishop of Grenoble, approved of devotion to Our Lady of Salette, in the following terms.

“We declare that the apparition of the Blessed Virgin to two shepherds, on September 19, 1846, on a mountain in the Alps in the parish of La Salette, bears in itself all the marks of truth and that the faithful are justified in believing without question in its truth. And so, to mark our lively gratitude to God and the glorious Virgin Mary, we authorise the cult of Our Lady of La Salette.”

Saint Annibale and Melanie Calvat with Daughters of Divine Zeal

In the beginning, Saint Annibale entrusted the girls’ orphanage to a distinguished widow who had been converted to a life of piety through one of his sermons: Laura Jensen Bucca was a genuine help to him for several years, but then she resigned. The priest turned to various religious communities, only in vain. So he decided to found his own congregation of nuns whom he called Daughters of Divine Zeal, patterned after the inspiration of the Rogate – the expression of the zeal burning in the Sacred Heart of Jesus for the glory of the Father and the salvation of souls.

The budding community was not without its headaches: tribulation goes hand in hand with all the works of God. Not only that, it is the bright badge of divine favor. In the light of a schism which occurred, the Institute was suppressed by Church authority. Thanks to the offices of a venerable Friar Minor, Fr. Bernard of Portosalvo, a one-year stay on the decree was given to the Fr. Annibale. The Institute was put on trial. During that year, he had as a cooperator for his work none other than Melanie Calvat, the famous young shepherdess to whom the Mother of God appeared on the mountain of La-Salette. Melanie remained at the Institute for one year, from September 1897 to September 1898 – a year which, in the words of Saint Annibale, was a year of blessing. The trial period was weathered successfully, having a healthy and vigorous effect on the community, and the women’s congregation was put on a safe footing.

Melanie died at the age of 72, alone and unattended, on December 14, 1904, at Altamura, near Bari, Italy. She is buried beneath a marble column with a bas-relief depiction of Our Lady welcoming her into heaven. In spite of her unapproved writings, Melanie was always faithful to her original account of the apparition and message of La Salette. She demonstrated this at the Shrine of La Salette during her last visit there September 8-19,1902.

9/18 – Everything one does in the Divine Will does not remain on earth but departs for Heaven

 Ersonal Reflection pic

Our Lord Jesus Christ to the Servant of God, Luisa Piccarreta, The Little Daughter of the Divine Will:

 From The Book of Heaven

 VOLUME 33

March 10, 1935

Everything that one does in the Divine Will does not remain down on earth, but departs for Heaven in order to take its Royal Place in the Celestial Fatherland.

I am always returning into the Interminable Sea of the Divine Will in order to take Its little drops that nourish, conserve, and make grow the Life of the Divine Will that I feel in me. In fact, every Truth that regards It, is a dinner that Jesus gives me, all Celestial and Divine, in order to nourish me and the Supreme Fiat. Every Truth is a shower from Heaven that descends on me, and surrounding me it waits until I finish my acts in order to carry them into the Celestial Fatherland.

Now, while I was lost in Its Divine Light, my beloved Good Jesus, repeating His brief little visit, told me: “My blessed daughter(Luisa), Heaven is always open for one who Lives in My Will. It lowers Itself and does together with the creature what she does. Together It Loves, works, prays, suffers, adores, repairs; and It so much Loves these acts done together with It, that It does not leave them down on earth, but It carries them into the Celestial Sojourn in order to make them take their Royal Place as conquests made down in the world that belong to It and to Its beloved creature.

“What is done in My Volition belongs to Heaven; the earth is not Worthy of possessing it. And O! the Security, the Happiness, that the creature acquires, thinking that her acts are in the Power of the Divine Fiat, and they find themselves in Heaven as her property, not human but Divine, that await her because they want to court her and form her throne of Glory. So much is Its Love, Its Jealousy, the Identification that It feels with these acts done in Its Volition, that It does not even leave them in the creature, but It holds them with Itself as Births of Its Life, and births of the creature, in order to be able to enjoy them and to feel the pleasure of being Loved, and as an advance that It must give her of Glory in the Celestial Fatherland.

“These Acts done in My Volition act as narrators of the story of Love that passes between the Creator and the creature, and there is no greater enjoyment than to hear narrated how much I have Loved, how My Love arrives at the Excess, even to abasing Myself to want to do together what the creature does. Not only this, but It narrates to Me her love, that she has received My Act in hers. Therefore a reciprocal Love forms between the One and the other that makes each other Happy. O! how Beautiful it is to see that while she is still passing through the exile, her acts are in Heaven as My Conquests that I have made in the human will. And each one taking its Office, some Love Me as I know how to Love, some adore Me with Divine Adorations, and some form for Me Celestial Music in order to extol Me, praise Me, and thank Me for the Great Portent of the Operation of My Will. Therefore be attentive, and do not let anything escape you in which you do not call Mine, so that what you do remains animated by My Divine Will.”

So I continued to think about the Supreme Fiat, and thousands of thoughts crowded in my mind, and my Lovable Jesus added: “My daughter(Luisa), the creature was Created by Us all in order to Us, therefore it is her Sacrosanct Duty that in every act that she does, to call He who has Created her in order to give Him the Dominion and Royal Place in her act that by Right belongs to Him, and so that the act of the creature would receive the honor that in her act she possesses a Strength, a Light, a Divine Act. It is Our Will that she must be completely filled with the Divine Being, and if she does not do this, she denies to Us one of Our Rights, she places Us outside of her acts, and her acts remain human acts, emptied of Divine Strength and Light, with a darkness so dense, that her intelligence sees so many black shadows, that gropingly she makes some step—just suffering for who can turn on the light and does not turn it on, for who can call the strength and does not call it, and who while she makes use of the Act and of the Conservative and Acting Work of God, she places it outside of her act.

“Now it is Our Decree that no one enters into Heaven if her soul is not filled, even to the brim, completely with Our Will and with Our Love; a little void of this is enough that Heaven does not open for her. This is the reason for the necessity of Purgatory, in order to empty herself by way of sufferings and fire of everything that is human, and filling herself by ways of anxieties, of longings, of martyrdoms, of Pure Love and of Divine Will, in order to be able to enter into the Celestial Fatherland—and without acquiring with so many sufferings either merit, or greater glory, but only for the conditions that are needed in order to be admitted to the Celestial Sojourn.

“On the other hand, if they would have done it on earth by calling Our Life in their acts, every act would be one greater Glory, one additional Beauty, Sealed by the Works of her Creator. O! with how much Love are these souls received, who in their acts have given a place to the Divine Act. In meeting with Us, We recognize Ourselves in her, and she recognizes herself in Us, and recognizing each other, such and so much is the Happiness of both, that the whole of Heaven remains surprised in seeing the Joys, the Glory, the Beatitudes that the Supreme Being pours over this fortunate creature. Therefore I want you always in My Will and in My Love, so that Love burns what does not belong to Me, and My Will with Its paintbrush of Light forms Our Act in your act.”

9/17 – The New Name “MY Fiat”

Ersonal Reflection pic

Our Lord Jesus Christ to the Servant of God, Luisa Piccarreta, The Little Daughter of the Divine Will:

 VOLUME 34

 January 24, 1937

The Divine Will, for one who Lives in It, forms the repeater of Its Life and of Its Love, and It forms and extends in her the whole of Creation and everything that Jesus did. How It will give her a new name calling her: “My Fiat.”

I am at the mercy of the Supreme Fiat, that always wants to give me of Its, in order to keep me occupied and to always have something to do together with my poor soul. And if It perceives some little void that is not Its Will, with an admirable and inimitable activity, It sees what is lacking in me of all Its Acts that It has done for Love of creatures, and all in feast It seals it in my soul, giving me a little tiny Lesson.

I was surprised, and my always Lovable Jesus, visiting His little daughter, told me: “My good daughter(Luisa), do not marvel. The Love of My Volition is Exuberant, but with Highest Wisdom, because It wants to do, for one who Lives in Its Volition, Works Worthy of It, the little repeaters of Its Life, of Its Love. And to hide in them the Sanctity and the multiplicity of Its Works. It wants to continue Its Creative Work. It wants to form, to repeat, and to extend the whole Creation, and even more, in one who Lives in Its Volition. Listen to where Its Love reaches: My Fiat Created the Creation, and for each created thing It places a Value, a Love, and a distinct Office, since it must produce a distinct Good for the creatures, so much so that the sky possesses one Value, one Love and one Office all its own. The sun, the wind, the sea, possess another, and they do distinct Offices. And the same for all created things.

“Now, listen to what My Will does for one who Lives in It: everything that It does is hers; therefore in one Act It encloses the Value, the Love, and the Office that the sky does, and It gives to the creature the Love and the Value of the sky. In another act It pronounces Its Fiat, and encloses there the Value, the Love, that It had in Creating the sun, and It lets her do the Office of sun. In another It encloses there the Value of the wind, its ruling Love, and pronouncing Its Fiat It lets her do the Office of wind. In another It encloses there the Value of the sea, and pronouncing Its Fiat It lets her do the Office of the sea and gives her the virtue of always murmuring ‘Love, Love, Love.’ In sum, there is no act that she does that It does not delight in pronouncing Its Fiat, and there It encloses the Value of the air, there the sweet song of the birds, the bleating of the lambs, there the beauty of the flowers. And if the acts of the creature do not arrive at extending the Work of Creation, It makes use of the heartbeat, of the breath, of the rapidity as the blood circulates in her veins, It animates everything with Its Fiat, and forms there the Complete Creation.

“And when It has Completed everything of all that It has done in Creation for Love of creatures, It extends Its Domain there, and with Its Creative Strength It Conserves everything, It maintains the Order of the New Creation that It has formed in the acts of the creature. And It feels so very Loved and glorified because It does not find Creation without reason, without will, and without life, but It finds the strength of a reason, of a will and life, that voluntarily has undergone in her acts the Power of Its Fiat, Its Creative Virtue, Its Divine Life Itself, Its Ruling and Untiring Love, in a word, she has let It do with her what It wanted, even with her breath and with her acts.

“My blessed daughter(Luisa), continue to listen to Me. Let Me pour out My Love, I cannot contain it anymore. I want to tell you where My Love reaches, and where it can reach and can do for one who Lives in My Fiat. Do you believe that My Volition has been content, It has said ‘enough,’ because It has enclosed the Value, the Love and the different Offices of the whole of Creation in the creature who Lives as in harmony with It, with One Single Will? No, no! You must know that I came on earth, and in the ardor of My Love I offered My Life, My sufferings and My very Death, in order to Repurchase My Divine Will for the benefit of creatures who, with so much ingratitude, had rejected, and therefore lost, It. In fact, My Life served as disbursement of the price that was needed in order to reacquire It and give It into the possession of My children, therefore there was needed a God in order to be able to have sufficient Value to be able to Purchase a Divine Will. See, then, how it is certain that the Kingdom of My Volition will come, because the Purchase was made by Me.

“Now, My Will, after having formed the Order of Creation, with all the Sumptuousness and Sublimity of Its Creative Work, as the creature goes repeating her acts, in one Act It pronounces Its Fiat and forms there My Life and It encloses Its Value. In another Act It pronounces Its Fiat and encloses in her sufferings the Value of My sufferings; It pronounces Its Fiat over her tears and places there the Value of Mine.   Its Fiat follows in her works, in her steps, in her heartbeat, and It encloses there the Value of My Works, of My steps, and of My Love. There is no prayer, or even natural acts, that she does, that It does not enclose the Value of My Acts.   In fact, in one who Lives in My Divine Will, I feel Myself repeat My Life, and it Doubles the Value in order to Purchase My Divine Will for the benefit of the human generations. One can say that there is a contest between Me and her for who wants to give more, in order to make that My Will would be possessed again by the human family.

“But this is not yet everything. If It does not do Complete Works, It is not content. To the Value of the Creation and Redemption that It has enclosed in the soul, there It adds with an Incredible Love, there It encloses the Celestial Fatherland and makes resound Its Glory, Its Joys, the Eternal Beatitudes, as Seal and Confirmation of the Creative and Redemptive Work that It has formed in her. After this, in order to be more secure, It Creates there Its Heartbeat, Its Breath. It makes Its Life, Its Light, circulate more than blood, and as Triumphant It gives her a New name, calling her: ‘My Fiat.’ This name is the most Beautiful name that will make all of Heaven smile, and all of hell tremble, name that I can not give except to one who Lives in My Volition and has let Me do in her what I want. My daughter(Luisa), what can My Omnipotent Fiat not do and give? It arrives at so much, that It gives her rights over Its own Power, over Its Love, over Its Justice. It incorporates the will of the creature with Itself, and It tells her: ‘Be attentive, I do not want anything else from you than that you do what I do. Therefore it is necessary that you are always together with Me, and I with you.’”

9/16 The Celestial Militia

luisa_face favicon

Our Lord Jesus Christ to the Servant of God, Luisa Piccarreta, The Little Daughter of the Divine Will:

  VOLUME 34

June 28, 1937

What God does for the creature when she decides to Live in His Will. As one decides to Live in the Divine Volition, her name is written in Heaven and remains Confirmed in Good, in Love and Divine Sanctity, and she is added to the Celestial Militia. Example.

My flight in the Divine Volition continues. I feet myself carried in Its arms, but with such Love and Tenderness as to feel myself confused in seeing myself Loved so much, and surrounded everywhere by Its Maternal Goodness.

And my sweet Jesus, repeating His brief little visit to me, with a Love as to feel my heart burst, all Goodness told me: “My daughter(Luisa) of My Volition, if you knew how much is Our Contentment in seeing the soul enter into Our Will, one can say that she runs toward Us, and We toward her. And as We meet each other, Our Will invests her with Light, Our Love kisses her, Our Power takes her in Its arms, Our Wisdom directs her, Our Sanctity Invests her and places Itself there as Seal, Our Beauty embellishes her, in sum, all Our Divine Being places Itself in attitude around her in order to give her of Ours.

“But do you know why? Because entering into Our Volition, not to Live of hers but of Ours, We receive what went forth from Us. We feel restored to Us the Purpose for which We Created her, and therefore We make feast. There is no act more Beautiful, scene more enchanting, than of the creature entering into Our Will. And every time she enters, so many times We Renew her in Our Divine Being, giving her New Charismas of Love. Therefore one who Lives in Our Volition keeps Us in feast, she feels the need of Living in Ours in order to be coddled by her Creator, and We feel the need of being coddled by her, and giving her New Charismas of Grace and of Sanctity.”

Jesus became silent, and I felt sunk in the Eternal Volition, and I marveled in hearing how much we are Loved by God if we Live in His Volition. And a thousand thoughts crowded in my mind.

And my beloved Jesus, resuming His speaking, told me: “My daughter(Luisa), do not marvel because of what I have told you, rather, I will tell you more surprising things yet, but how much I would want that everyone would listen in order to make everyone decide to Live in My Volition. Listen, how consoling and Beautiful is what My Love pushes Me to tell you. So much is My Love, that I feel the need of telling you where We reach for one who Lives in Our Volition. Now, you must know that as the soul decides repeatedly and firmly to live no more of her will but of Ours, her name becomes written in Heaven with Indelible characters of Light, and she becomes enrolled in the Celestial Militia as Heiress and Daughter of the Kingdom of the Divine Will.

“But this is not enough for Our Love. We Confirm her in Good in a way that she will feel such horror for every least sin, that she will not be capable anymore of falling. Not only this, but she will remain Confirmed in the Goods, in the Love, in the Sanctity, etc., of her Creator. She will be invested by the Prerogative of reclaimed part, she will no longer be looked at as exiled, and if she will remain on earth, she will be as officiating of the Celestial Militia, not as exiled. She will have all the Goods at her disposition. She will be able to say: ‘His Will being mine, what is of God is mine.’ Rather, she will feel herself Possessor of her Creator.

“And since she no longer operates with her will, but with Mine, all the barriers are broken that impeded her from hearing her Creator, the distances have disappeared, the dissimilarity between her and God does not exist anymore. She will feel herself so Loved by He who has Created her, as to feel her heart burst with Love in order to Love He who Loves her. And feeling herself Loved by God is the greatest joy, honor, and glory for the creature. My daughter, do not marvel. They are Our Goals, the Purpose for which the creature was Created—to find in her Our Life, Our Reigning Will, Our Love, in order to be Loved and to Love her. If this were not so, all Creation would be a work unworthy of Us.”

I felt my heart burst with Joy in hearing what my dear Jesus had told me, and I said to myself: “Is it possible, is all this Great Good possible?”

And sweet Jesus added: “Daughter, am I not Master to do and to give what I want? It is enough that I want it, and everything is done. And then, also in the low world things happen that in some way resemble this. If a man gives his name in writing to the army of the government, this, in order to be secure of him, makes him swear fidelity to the government. This oath makes him remain bound to the army. He dresses with the uniform of the militia in a way that it is recognized by everyone that he belongs to the army. And when he has shown ability and fidelity, he receives the salary for life. With this salary that no one can take away from him, he lacks nothing. He can have servants who serve him, he can live with all the comforts of life, and although, with time, he would retire in rest. And what thing has this man given to the government? Only the external part of his life that gave him the right to receive the pay during his life.

“On the other hand, one who with firm decision has given her will to Me, has given Me the most noble, most precious, part, that is, her will. In it she has given Me all the interior and exterior, even the breath, and with this she has merited to be written in the Divine Army in a way that everyone will know that she belongs to Our Militia. How could I let her lack anything, how not to Love her? If this could be, it would have been the Greatest Sorrow for your Jesus, it would have taken away the Peace that I possess by Nature, to not Love she who has given Me everything and who with Indescribable Love I possess. I keep her in My Heart, and I let her have My Life itself.”

How one can participate in the sorrows of the Queen Mama

The Servant of God, Luisa Piccarreta the Little Daughter of the Divine Will:

Having been in much suffering because of the privation of my most sweet Jesus, this morning, the day of the Sorrows of Mary Most Holy, after I struggled in some way, He came and told me:  “My daughter, what do you want, that you so much yearn for Me?”

And I:  “Lord, what You have for Yourself – that is what I yearn for myself.”

And He:  “My daughter, for Myself I have thorns, nails and cross.”

And I:  “Well then, that is what I want for myself.”  So He gave me His crown of
thorns and shared with me the pains of the cross.

Then He added:  “Everyone can share in the merits and in the goods produced by the sorrows of My Mother.

The one who, in advance, places herself in the hands of Providence, offering
herself to suffer any kind of pains, miseries, illnesses, calumnies, and
everything which the Lord will dispose upon her, comes to participate in the
first sorrow of the prophecy of Simeon.

The one who actually finds herself amid sufferings, and is resigned, clings
more tightly to Me and does not offend Me, it is as if she were saving Me from
the hands of Herod, keeping Me safe and sound within the Egypt of her heart –
and she participates in the second sorrow.

The one who feels downhearted, dry and deprived of my presence, and remains
yet firm and faithful to her usual practices – even more, she takes the
opportunity to love Me and to search for Me more, without tiring – comes to
participate in the merits and goods which my Mother acquired when I was
lost (third sorrow).

The one who, in any circumstance she encounters, especially in seeing Me gravely offended, despised, trampled upon, tries to repair Me, to compassionate Me, and to pray for the very ones who offend Me – it is as if I encountered in that soul My own Mother who, if She could have done it, would have freed Me from My enemies; and she participates in the fourth sorrow.

The one who crucifies her senses for love of My crucifixion, and tries to copy the virtues of My crucifixion within herself, participates in the fifth one.

The one who is in a continuous attitude of adoring, of kissing My wounds, of repairing, of thanking etc., in the name of all mankind, it is as if she were holding Me in her arms, just as my Mother held Me when I was deposed from the Cross – and she participates in the sixth sorrow.

The one who remains in My grace and corresponds to it, giving a place to no one else but Me within her heart, it is as if she buried Me in the center of her heart – and she participates in the seventh one.”

Replica of the famous miraculous picture of
OUR LADY OF SORROWS in Quito, Ecuador

1. The prophecy of Simeon: “And Simeon blessed them, and said to Mary his mother: Behold this child is set for the fall and for the resurrection of many in Israel, and for a sign which shall be contradicted; And thy own soul a sword shall pierce, that out of many hearts thoughts may be revealed” (Luke II: 34-35).

Meditation: How great was the shock to Mary’s Heart at hearing the sorrowful words, in which holy Simeon told the bitter Passion and death of her sweet Jesus, since in that same moment she realized in her mind all the insults, blows, and torments which the impious men were to offer to the Redeemer of the world. But a still sharper sword pierced her soul. It was the thought of men’s ingratitude to her beloved Son. Now consider that because of your sins you are unhappily among the ungrateful.
2. The flight into Egypt: “And after they (the wise men) were departed, behold an angel of the Lord appeared in sleep to Joseph, saying: Arise and take the child and His mother and fly into Egypt: and be there until I shall tell thee. For it will come to pass that Herod will seek the child to destroy Him. Who arose and took the child and His mother by night, and retired into Egypt: and He was there until the death of Herod” (Matt. II: 13-14).

Meditation: Consider the sharp sorrow which Mary felt when, St. Joseph being warned by an angel, she had to flee by night in order to preserve her beloved Child from the slaughter decreed by Herod. What anguish was hers, in leaving Judea, lest she should be overtaken by the soldiers of the cruel king! How great her privations in that long journey! What sufferings she bore in that land of exile, what sorrow amid that people given to idolatry! But consider how often you have renewed that bitter grief of Mary, when your sins have caused her Son to flee from your heart.

3. The loss of the Child Jesus in the temple: “And having fulfilled the days, when they returned, the Child Jesus remained in Jerusalem; and His parents knew it not. And thinking that he was in the company, they came a day’s journey, and sought him among their kinsfolk and acquaintance. And not finding Him, they returned into Jerusalem, seeking Him” (Luke II: 43-45).

Meditation: How dread was the grief of Mary, when she saw that she had lost her beloved Son! And as if to increase her sorrow, when she sought Him diligently among her kinsfolk and acquaintance, she could hear no tidings of Him. No hindrances stayed her, nor weariness, nor danger; but she forthwith returned to Jerusalem, and for three long days sought Him sorrowing. Great be your confusion, O my soul, who has so often lost your Jesus by your sins, and has given no heed to seek Him at once, a sign that you make very little or no account of the precious treasure of divine love.
4. The meeting of Jesus and Mary on the Way of the Cross: “And there followed Him a great multitude of people, and of women, who bewailed and lamented Him” (Luke XXIII: 27).

Meditation: Come, O ye sinners, come and see if ye can endure so sad a sight. This Mother, so tender and loving, meets her beloved Son, meets Him amid an impious rabble, who drag Him to a cruel death, wounded, torn by stripes, crowned with thorns, streaming with blood, bearing His heavy cross. Ah, consider, my soul, the grief of the blessed Virgin thus beholding her Son! Who would not weep at seeing this Mother’s grief? But who has been the cause of such woe? I, it is I, who with my sins have so cruelly wounded the heart of my sorrowing Mother! And yet I am not moved; I am as a stone, when my heart should break because of my ingratitude.

5. The Crucifixion: “They crucified Him. Now there stood by the cross of Jesus, His Mother. When Jesus therefore had seen His Mother and the disciple standing whom he loved, He saith to His Mother: Woman: behold thy son. After that he saith to the disciple: Behold thy Mother” (John XIX: l8, 25-27).

Meditation: Look, devout soul, look to Calvary, whereon are raised two altars of sacrifice, one on the body of Jesus, the other on the heart of Mary. Sad is the sight of that dear Mother drowned in a sea of woe, seeing her beloved Son, part of her very self, cruelly nailed to the shameful tree of the cross. Ah me! how every blow of the hammer, how every stripe which fell on the Saviour’s form, fell also on the disconsolate spirit of the Virgin. As she stood at the foot of the cross, pierced by the sword of sorrow, she turned her eyes on Him, until she knew that He lived no longer and had resigned His spirit to His Eternal Father. Then her own soul was like to have left the body and joined itself to that of Jesus.

6. The taking down of the Body of Jesus from the Cross: “Joseph of Arimathea, a noble counselor, came and went in boldly to Pilate, and begged the body of Jesus. And Joseph buying fine linen, and taking Him down, wrapped Him up in the fine linen” (Mark XV: 43-46).

Meditation: Consider the most bitter sorrow which rent the soul of Mary, when she saw the dead body of her dear Jesus on her knees, covered with blood, all torn with deep wounds. O mournful Mother, a bundle of myrrh, indeed, is thy Beloved to thee. Who would not pity thee? Whose heart would not be softened, seeing affliction which would move a stone? Behold John not to be comforted, Magdalen and the other Mary in deep affliction, and Nicodemus, who can scarcely bear her sorrow.

7. The burial of Jesus: “Now there was in the place where He was crucified, a garden; and in the garden a new sepulcher, wherein no man yet had been laid. There, therefore, because of the parasceve of the Jews, they laid Jesus, because the sepulcher was nigh at hand” (John XIX: 41-42).

Meditation: Consider the sighs which burst from Mary’s sad heart when she saw her beloved Jesus laid within the tomb. What grief was hers when she saw the stone lifted to cover that sacred tomb! She gazed a last time on the lifeless body of her Son, and could scarce detach her eyes from those gaping wounds. And when the great stone was rolled to the door of the sepulcher, oh, then indeed her heart seemed torn from her body!

The Miraculous Image of Our Lady of Sorrows
The picture of Our Lady of Quito, an image of Our Lady with the seven swords piercing her heart, was first placed in the boarding school of the Jesuit Fathers in Quito. On April 20, 1906, Father Andrew Roesch along with thirty-six boys of the academy witnessed the first miracle of this famous picture of Our Lady of Sorrows; while in the refectory they saw the Blessed Mother slowly open and shut her eyes.

The same miracle occurred several times after this, once more in front of the boys at the school, but this time in the chapel, to which the picture had been taken. Subsequently the canonical process of examination was carried out by the ecclesiastical authorities, and the Vicar General ordered the picture to be transferred in procession from the College to the Church of the Jesuit Fathers.

At the church the prodigy was repeated several times before the crowds gathered there, and many conversions took place. Again and again, the wonder repeated itself, at one time for three consecutive days.

On the 50th anniversary of the first miracle, His Holiness Pope Pius XII ordered the Canonical Coronation of the miraculous image of Our Sorrowful Mother, declaring her Queen of the Catholic Education in Ecuador.

DEVOTION TO OUR MOTHER OF SORROWS
Devotion to the Sorrows of Mary has always been a favorite devotion among Catholics. It has been sanctioned by the Church and introduced into the Missal and Breviary. In order to keep before our minds the inexpressible sufferings endured for us by the Mother of God while she lived here on earth with her Divine Son, the Church observes two feasts in honor of the Seven Dolors of Mary; one on the Friday before Good Friday and the other on September 15. She has enriched with numerous indulgences the Rosary of the Seven Dolors, as well as a number of other devotions to the Mother of Sorrows. How touching is the beautiful hymn, Stabat Mater Dolorosa, which the Church intertwines with the public recitation of the Way of the Cross. The Church spares no pain to induce her children to venerate the sufferings of their Heavenly Mother. Seven of her sorrows have been chosen for our special veneration. Holy Church recalls to our mind only seven of Our Lady’s Dolors, but who could form an estimate of their real number! The sufferings of the Mother of God cannot be comprehended; they are inconceivable. But although her whole life was, like that of her Divine Son, a continuous series of sufferings and tribulations, the greatest woes and trials came to her during the week of the bitter passion and death of Jesus, when the storm of hatred and fury burst forth with all violence against Him. The precise object of the devotion to Our Lady of Sorrows consists of a heartfelt and sincere compassion for the Sorrows which the most holy Virgin endured through her whole life, especially for her long martyrdom, which began with the prophecy of holy Simeon and was consummated on Calvary.

Devotion to the sorrows of Mary should be practiced especially by souls who wish to rid themselves of sinful habits. This devotion nourishes the spirit of compunction, affords great consolation, strengthens confidence in God’s mercy, draws down the special protection of the Blessed Mother in the hour of temptation and preserves the converted sinner from relapsing into sin. The Mother of God once said to her faithful servant St. Bridget: “No matter how numerous a person’s sins may be, if he turns to me with a sincere purpose of amendment, I am prepared forthwith to receive him graciously, for I do not regard the number of sins he has committed, but look only upon the dispositions with which he comes to me; for I feel no aversion in healing his wounds, because I am called and am in truth the Mother of Mercy.” One of the gifts granted to those who have a devotion to the Dolors of Mary is the grace of a good and holy death. In recompense for her fidelity in remaining near to Jesus as He died on the Cross, Our Lady of Sorrows has received from Him a special power to assist souls in their last agony and no doubt she will above all exercise this power in behalf of those who have wept with her and compassionated her.

Our Lord once said to Veronica of Binasco: “My daughter, the tears which you shed in compassion for My sufferings are pleasing to Me, but bear in mind that on account of My infinite love for My Mother, the tears you shed in compassion for her sufferings are still more precious.”

Conversion of a Sinner Through the Intercession of Our Lady of Sorrows

In the revelations of St. Bridget we read that there was a rich man, as noble by birth as he was vile and sinful in his habits. He had given himself, by an express compact, as a slave to the devil; and for sixty successive years had served him, leading such a life as may be imagined, and never approached the sacraments. Now this prince was dying; and Jesus Christ, to show him mercy, commanded St. Bridget to tell her confessor to go and visit him and exhort him to confess his sins. The confessor went and the sick man said that he did not require confession, as he had often approached the sacrament of Penance. The priest went a second time; but this poor slave of hell persevered in his obstinate determination not to confess. Jesus again told the saint to have her confessor return. He did so; and of the third occasion told the sick man the revelation made to the saint, and that he had returned so many times because our Lord, who wished to show him mercy, had so ordered. On hearing this the dying man was touched, and began to weep: “But how,” he exclaimed, “can I be saved; I, who for sixty years have served the devil as his slave, and have my soul burdened with innumerable sins?” “My son,” answered the Father, encouraging him, “doubt not; if you repent of them, on the part of God I promise you pardon.” Then, gaining confidence, he said to the confessor, “Father, I looked upon myself as lost, and already despaired of salvation; but now I feel a sorrow for my sins, which gives me confidence; and since God has not yet abandoned me, I will make my confession.” In fact, he made his confession four times on that day, with the greatest marks of sorrow, and on the following morning received holy Communion. On the sixth day, contrite and resigned, he died. After his death, Jesus Christ again spoke to St. Bridget, and told her that the sinner was saved; that he was then in purgatory, and that he owed his salvation to the intercession of the Blessed Virgin His Mother; for the deceased, although he had lead so wicked a life, had nevertheless always had a great love and compassion for His Blessed Mother’s Sorrows.
