THE PRAYERS OF LUISA

ECHO THE ADORATION PRAYERS OF LUISA IN THE DIVINE WILL

VOLUME 20

 September 20, 1926

“My Love, I want what You want. It is true that I feel the sacrifice of writing (reading), but for love of You, I will do everything.”

“My Jesus, my Love, the day is now beginning, and in Your Will I want to go through all creatures, so that, in rising from their sleep, they may all rise in Your Will, to give You the adoration of all intelligences, the love of all hearts, the rising of all their works and of all their beings into the Light which this day will make shine over all generations.”

 VOLUME 24

 February 3, 1929

So, I was continuing my round in the Creation and Redemption, recalling within my mind all the Acts done by God in order to follow them, giving, for each Act, homages, adoration, love, thanksgiving.

VOLUME 12

December 25, 1920

I squeezed Him so very tightly to myself, and according to my usual way, I fused myself in His Will in order to find the thoughts of all with mine, and surround shivering Jesus with adorations from all created intellects; in order to find the gazes of all, and make all look at Jesus and distract Him from crying; in order to find the mouths, the words, the voices of all creatures, that all might kiss Him so as not to make Him wail, and might warm Him with their breath.

 VOLUME 3

 November 26 1899

I began to do my usual adorations to all of His Holy Members, beginning with His Most Sacred Head.

“Great God, too little is my suffering, I am not content with the cross alone, but I also want the thorns and the nails; and if I do not deserve this, because I am unworthy and a sinner, certainly You can give me the dispositions in order to deserve it.”

24 HOURS OF THE PASSION

Sixth Hour

I too want to accompany You, so that if You stagger, I may sustain You.

I too, O my Jesus, prostrate myself with You, and with You I intend to do what You do.

Ah Love, to what a state I see You reduced!  You are about to breathe Your last.  Oh, my Good, my sweet Life, O please, do not die!  Raise Your Face from this ground, which You wet with Your Most Holy Blood!  Come into my arms!  Let me die in Your place!

Therefore, my Love, I kiss Your most Holy Head.

Jesus, I compassionate You, and would like to place upon You as many Crowns of Glory; and in order to soothe You, I offer You all the angelic intelligences and Your own Intelligence, to give You an act of compassion and of reparation for all.

O Jesus, I kiss Your pitying Eyes, and in them I see all the evil gazes of creatures, which make tears and blood flow over Your Face.  I compassionate You, and I would like to soothe Your Sight by placing before You all the pleasures that can be found in Heaven and on earth through Union of Love with You.

Jesus, my Good, I kiss Your most Holy Ears.

Oh insatiable Love, I compassionate You, and I want to console You by making resound in it all the harmonies of Heaven, the most sweet voice of dear Mama, the ardent accents of Magdalene, and of all the loving souls.

Jesus, my Life, I want to impress a more fervent kiss on Your Face, whose Beauty has no equal.  Ah, this is the Face on which the Angels, like cupids, desire to fix, for the great Beauty that enraptures them.  Yet, the creatures dirty it with spit, beat it with slaps, and trample it under foot.  My Love, what daring!  I would like to shout so loudly as to put them to flight!  I compassionate You, and in order to repair for these insults, I go to the Most Holy Trinity, to ask for the Kiss of the Father and of the Holy Spirit, and the Divine Caresses of Their Creative Hands.  I also go to the Celestial Mama, that She may give me Her kisses, the caresses of Her Maternal hands, and Her profound adorations; and I offer You everything, to repair for the offenses given to Your most holy Face.

My sweet Good, I kiss Your Most Holy Mouth, embittered by horrible blasphemies, by the nausea of drunkenness and gluttony, by obscene discourses, by prayers done badly, by evil teachings, and by all the evil that man does with his tongue.  Jesus, I compassionate You, and I want to sweeten Your Mouth  by offering You all the angelic praises and the good use of the tongue made by many holy Christians.

My oppressed Love, I kiss Your Neck, and I see it loaded down with ropes and chains, because of the attachments and the sins of creatures.  I compassionate You, and in order to relieve You, I offer You the indissoluble Union of the Divine Persons; and fusing myself in this Union, I extend my arms toward You, and forming a sweet chain of love around Your Neck, I want to remove the ropes of the attachments, which almost suffocate You; and to console You, I press You tightly to my heart.

Divine Fortress, I kiss Your most Holy Shoulders.

I compassionate You, and in order to relieve You, I offer You Your most holy examples, the examples of the Queen Mama, and those of all the saints.  And I, O my Jesus, letting my kisses flow over each one of these Wounds, want to enclose in them the souls who, by force of scandals, have been snatched from Your Heart, and so re-join the Flesh of Your Most Holy Humanity.

My labored Jesus, I kiss Your Breast, which I see Wounded by coldness, lukewarmness, lack of correspondence and ingratitudes of creatures.  I compassionate You, and in order to relieve You, I offer You the reciprocal Love of the Father and the Holy Spirit – the perfect correspondence of the Three Divine Persons.  And plunging into Your Love, O my Jesus, I want to shelter You in order to reject the new blows that creatures throw at You with their sins; and taking Your Love, I want to Wound them with it, that they may never again dare to offend You; and I want to pour it upon Your Breast, to soothe You and to heal You.

My Jesus, I kiss Your Creative Hands.

I compassionate You, and to give You relief, I offer You all the holy works, and the courage of the martyrs in giving their blood and life for love of You.  In sum, O my Jesus, I would like to offer You all the good works, in order to remove from You the many nails of the evil works.

O Jesus, I kiss Your Most Holy Feet, always untiring in searching for souls.

My God and my Good, I compassionate You, and in order to console You, I offer You the steps of the good religious and of all the faithful souls, who expose their lives in order to save souls.

O Jesus, I kiss Your Heart.  I compassionate You, and I want to soothe the bitterness of Your Heart, pierced three times, by offering You the Eternal Sweetnesses and the most sweet Love of dear Mama Mary, as well as those of all Your true lovers.

And now, O my Jesus, let my poor heart draw life from Your Heart, that I may Live only with Your Heart; and in each offense You will receive, let me be ever ready to offer You a relief, a comfort, a reparation, an act of love, never interrupted.

VOLUME 12

December 6, 1919

I was doing the adoration to my Crucified Jesus telling Him: “My Love, in Your Will I find all generations; and in the name of the whole human family, I adore You, I kiss You, I repair You for all.  I give Your Wounds and Your Blood to all, so that all may find their salvation.  And if the lost souls can no longer benefit from Your Most Holy Blood, nor love You, I take It in their place, in order to do what they should have done.  I do not want Your Love to remain defrauded in anything on the part of creatures.  I want to compensate, repair You, love You for all, from the first to the last man.”

24 HOURS OF THE PASSION

Twenty-first Hour

O my Jesus, I intend to repair for those who despair of the Divine Mercy at the point of death.  My Sweet Love, inspire trust and unlimited confidence in You for all, especially for those who find themselves in the grips of agony; and by virtue of Your Word, concede to them Light, Strength and Help, to be able to die in a saintly way, and fly from this earth up to Heaven.  O Jesus, enclose all souls, all of them, in Your Most Holy Body, in Your Blood, in Your Wounds.  And by the Merits of this Most Precious Blood of Yours, do not allow even one soul to be lost!  Together with Your Voice, may Your Blood cry out for all, again: “Today you will be with Me in Paradise.”

O my Jesus Crucified, I adore Your Most Precious Blood; I kiss Your Wounds one by one, intending to profuse in them all my love, my adorations, my most heartfelt reparations.  May Your Blood be for all souls, Light in darkness, Comfort in sufferings, Strength in weakness, Forgiveness in guilt, Help in temptations, Defense in dangers, Support in death, and Wings to carry them all from this earth up to Heaven.

O Jesus, I come to You, and in Your Heart I form my nest and my home.  O my Sweet Love, I will call everyone to You from within Your Heart; and if anyone wants to draw near to offend You, I will expose my breast, and I will not permit him to Wound You; even more, I will enclose him in Your Heart; I will speak about Your Love, and I will make the offenses turn into Love.

O Jesus, do not allow me ever to leave Your Heart; feed me with Your Flames, and give me Life with Your Life, that I may Love You as You Yourself yearn to be Loved.

Twenty-second Hour

With Magdalene I cling to Your Feet and, if it were possible, I would like to give my life to revive Yours.

My Jesus, I too abandon myself in You; give me the Grace to die completely in Your Love – in Your Will, and I pray that You never permit me, either in life or in death, to go out of Your Most Holy Will.  Meanwhile I intend to repair for all those who do not abandon themselves perfectly to Your Most Holy Will, therefore losing or maiming the Precious Gift of Your Redemption.  What is not the sorrow of Your Heart, O my Jesus, in seeing so many creatures escaping from Your Arms and abandoning themselves to themselves?  Have pity on all, O my Jesus – have pity on me.

I kiss Your Head crowned with thorns, and I ask Your Forgiveness for my many thoughts of pride, of ambition and of self-esteem.  And I promise You that every time a thought arises in me which is not completely for You, O Jesus, and that I find myself in occasions of offending You, immediately I will cry out:  “Jesus and Mary, I commend my soul to You.”

O Jesus, I kiss Your Beautiful Eyes, still wet with tears and covered with dried Blood, and I ask Your Forgiveness for all the times I have offended You with evil and immodest gazes.  I promise You that every time my eyes are led to look at things of the earth, immediately I will cry out:  “Jesus and Mary, I commend my soul to You.”

O my Jesus, I kiss Your Most Sacred Ears, deafened by insults and horrible blasphemies up to the very last moments, and I ask Your Forgiveness for all the times I have listened to, or made others listen to discourses which move us away from You, and for all the evil discourses made by creatures.  I promise You that every time I find myself in the occasion of hearing unseemly discourses, immediately I will cry out:  “Jesus and Mary, I commend my soul to You.”

O my Jesus, I kiss Your Most Holy Face, pale, bruised and bleeding, and I ask Your Forgiveness for the many scorns, offenses and insults You receive from us, most miserable creatures, with our sins.  I promise You that every time I have the temptation of not giving You all the Glory, the Love and the adoration which is due to You, immediately I will cry out:  “Jesus and Mary, I commend my soul to You.”

O my Jesus, I kiss Your Most Sacred Mouth, dry and embittered.  I ask Your Forgiveness for all the times I have offended You with my evil discourses; for all the times I have contributed to embittering You and increasing Your thirst.  I promise You that every time the thought comes to me of making discourses which might offend You, immediately I will cry out:  “Jesus and Mary, I commend my soul to You.”

O my Jesus, I kiss Your Most Holy Neck, and I can still see the marks of the chains and ropes which have oppressed You.  I ask Your Forgiveness for the many bonds and the many attachments of the creatures, which have increased the ropes and the chains around Your most Holy Neck.  And I promise You that every time I feel disturbed by attachments, desires and affections which are not for You, immediately I will cry out:  “Jesus and Mary, I commend my soul to You.”

My Jesus, I kiss Your Most Holy Shoulders, and I ask Your Forgiveness for the many illicit satisfactions; Forgiveness for the many sins committed with the five senses of our body.  I promise You that every time the thought comes to me of taking some pleasures or satisfactions which are not for Your Glory, immediately I will cry out: “Jesus and Mary, I commend my soul to You.’

My Jesus, I kiss Your Most Holy Breast, and I ask Your Forgiveness for all the coldness, indifference, lukewarmness and horrendous ingratitude You receive from the creatures; and I promise You that every time I feel my love for You become cooler, immediately I will cry out:  “Jesus and Mary, I commend my soul to You.”

My Jesus, I kiss Your Most Sacred Hands.  I ask Your Forgiveness for all the evil and indifferent works; for many acts rendered malicious by love of self and self-esteem.  I promise You that every time the thought comes to me of not operating only for love of You, immediately I will cry out:  “Jesus and Mary, I commend my soul to You.’

O my Jesus, I kiss Your Most Holy Feet, and I ask Your Forgiveness for the many steps, the many paths covered without righteous intention; for many who move away from You to go in search of the pleasures of the earth.  I promise You that every time the thought comes to me of moving away from You, immediately I will cry out:  “Jesus and Mary, I commend my soul to You.”

O Jesus, I kiss Your Most Sacred Heart, and I intend to enclose in It, with my soul, all the souls redeemed by You, so that all may be saved – no one excluded.

O Jesus, lock me in Your Heart, and close the doors, that I may see nothing but You.  I promise You that every time the thought comes to me of wanting to go out of this Heart, immediately I will cry out:  “Jesus and Mary, to You I give my heart and my soul.”

VOLUME 12

July 2, 1918

“Jesus, I love You; but my love is small, therefore I love You in Your Love, to make it great.  I want to adore You with Your Adorations, pray in Your Prayer, thank You in Your Thanksgivings.”

May 22, 1919

“Jesus, I lay at Your feet the adoration, the subjection of the whole human family; I place in Your Heart the ‘I love You’ of all; on Your Lips I impress my kiss in order to seal the kiss of all generations; I clasp You with my arms in order to clasp You with the arms of all, to bring You the Glory of all the works of all creatures.”

January 9, 1920

“Eternal Majesty, I come to Your Feet in the name of the whole human family, from the first to the last man of the future generations, to adore You profoundly.  At Your Most Holy Feet I want to seal the adorations of all; I come to recognize You in the name of all as Creator and Absolute Ruler of all.  I come to love You for all and for each one; I come to requite You in Love for all, because of each created thing, in which You placed so much Love that the creature will never find enough love to repay You in Love.  But in Your Will I find this Love, and wanting that my love, as well as the other acts, be complete, full and for all, I have come into Your Will where everything is Immense and Eternal, and where I can find Love to be able to Love You for all.  So, I Love You for each star You have created; I Love You for all the drops of light and for all the intensity of heat which You have placed in the sun.”

“… in the name of all, adoration, love, gratitude and thanksgiving for everything.”

VOLUME 12

 January 17, 1921

“In Your Fiat You gave me all this Love, and only in the Fiat can I return it to You.”

February 2, 1921

“I want to create so much love, so many adorations, so many blessings, so much glory to my God as to compensate for everyone and for everything.”

VOLUME 18

 November 22, 1925

“May my mind rise in the Supreme Will, in order to cover all the intelligences of creatures with Your Will, so that all may rise in It; and in the name of all I give You the adoration, the love, the submission of all created intelligences.”

 January 10, 1926

I was fusing all of myself in the Holy Divine Volition, and the littleness of my mind wandered within It.  I could see It everywhere and in every place, always in the Act of Operating in the whole Creation.  Oh! how I would have wanted to follow It, in order to give It my little requital of love in everything It was doing; my ‘thank you’, my profound adoration, my meager company.

 VOLUME 19

 May 23, 1926

Then, afterwards, my poor mind was wandering in the Holy Divine Will, doing my usual acts in It.  It seemed to me that everything was mine, and as I went around through all created things to impress everywhere my ‘I love You,’ my adoration, my ‘Glory to my Creator’, I acquired New Knowledge of what God has done for the creature, and of how much He has Loved us.  The Supreme Will seemed to delight in making known the New Surprises of Its Love, so that I might follow Its Acts in order for It to give me the right to possess what has come out of Its Creative Will.  My littleness wandered amid Its Immense Goods.

VOLUME 21

May 24, 1927

“Jesus, my Love, I want Your Hands in mine, in order to give to our Celestial Father that Love and that Glory which You, individually, gave Him with Your Works while being on earth. Not only this, but I want to unite myself with You when You, Word of the Father, even from Eternity Operated together with Him with His very Works, Loving with Reciprocal Love and with Perfect Equality; and I want to Glorify You with that same Glory with which You Glorified Yourselves among the Three Divine Persons.

“But I am not content; I want to place my hands in Yours in order to flow together with Your Hands, in Your own Will, within the sun, to give You the glory of the light, of the heat, of the fecundity of the sun; in the sea, to give You the glory of its waves, of its continuous murmuring; in the air, to give You the glory of the singing of the birds; in the azure heaven, to give You the glory of its immensity. And in the flickering of the stars, in their twinkling, I make my voice flow, saying to You:  ‘I love You.’  I want to flow in the flowery fields, to give You the glory and the adoration of their fragrances.  There is no point in which I do not want to be, so that everywhere, You may feel Your little daughter, adoring You, loving You, glorifying You.”

VOLUME 26

April 12, 1929

I was all abandoned in the Divine Fiat; Its Light eclipsed my littleness and transported me up there, even into the Womb of the Eternal One, where nothing but Light, Sanctity, Beauty could be seen, that infused in me profound adoration, such that I felt my little existence changed into one single act of adoration for that God who so much Loved me and Loves me.

June 4, 1929

“Bow down, and let us adore, with double homage, our Creator.  That Fiat which Created us is in my act, and with It I want to create New Love, New Adoration and Glory for our Creator.”

VOLUME 28

November 30, 1930

“I want to enter into the sun in order to find the Divine Will Operating in its light, so as to give to It all the beauty, the purity, the holiness, the power, that a human will operating in its light can contain. I want to enter into the azure heavens in order to embrace It and give It my will operating in the vastness of the heavens, in the multiplicity of the stars, to give It the glory, the love of a heaven, and many profound acts of adoration for as many as are the stars.”

 VOLUME 29

March 16, 1931

“I would like to be heavens to be able to extend myself in everyone and everywhere—and in all points and over everyone—my love, my adoration, my glory toward my Creator.  I would like to be sun, and have so much Light as to fill heaven and earth, and convert everything into Light and, in this Light, have my continuous cry:  ‘I love You, I love You.’”

July 23, 1931

“My being has melted completely into love, into adoration—I have nothing left.”

 September 21, 1931

I was continuing my acts in the Divine Volition, and I prayed my Highest Good, Jesus, to make the Sun of the Divine Will rise in each of my acts, so that I might give Him, in each of my acts, the love, the homage, the glory as if I were forming for Him, in each act of mine, a day of Divine Light, of Love, of profound Adoration, communicated to me, into my act, by His own Will.  Oh! how I would like to say, in each of my acts, whether big or small:  “I make a day for Jesus, to love Him more.”

VOLUME 36

 December 18, 1938

“See how much I love You. I give You the sun to Love You, and I Love You with the same Love with which You Loved me in the sun; I give You the homage and the adoration of its light, the variety of its effects to Love You – its continuous act of light, to spread myself everywhere and put my ‘I love You’ in everything touched by its light.”

“See how much I love You – but it’s not enough, I want to love You more; so I enter into its Inaccessible, Immense, Eternal Light which never ends. From within that Light I want to Love You with Your Eternal Love.”

 VOLUME 11

October 2, 1913

Then, having received Communion, I was saying to Jesus, “I love You.”

“Jesus, I love You with Your Will. I adore You, I bless You, I praise You, I thank you.”

“I adore You, I bless You, I praise You, …united with Your Will, and will fill Heaven and earth with adorations, with blessings, with praises, with thanksgivings.”

 VOLUME 6

 December 22, 1903

“Lord, teach me what I could do to move these opprobriums away from You, and give You back honors, praises and adorations.”

 VOLUME 12

January 29, 1919

I was doing the adoration to the Wounds of Blessed Jesus, and at the end I recited the Creed, intending to enter into the Immensity of the Divine Will, in which are all the acts of creatures, past, present and future, and even those acts which the creature should do and, because of negligence and wickedness, she has not done.  And I was saying:  “My Jesus, my Love, I enter into Your Volition, and with this Creed I intend to redo, to repair, all the acts of faith which creatures have not done, all the disbeliefs, and the adoration which is due to God as Creator.”

“But You, my Life, give me Strength, and do not leave the poor little ignorant one on her own.”

“My Love, if there is so much Good about this Living in the Divine Will, why have You not manifested it before?”

February 24, 1919

In one instant we found ourselves before this Supreme Majesty, and in the name of all, we expressed our love, thanksgiving, adoration, for having created us with such an Excess of Love, and endowed us with so many beautiful qualities.

 April 7, 1919

“Jesus, I multiply my thoughts in Your Will, to give to each one of Your Thoughts the kiss of a Divine Thought, an adoration, a recognition of You, a reparation, a love of Divine Thoughts, as if another Jesus were doing it.  This, in the name of all and for all the human thoughts, past, present and future; and I intend to compensate even for the intelligences of lost souls.  I want that the glory on the part of creatures be complete, and that no one miss the roll call; and whatever they do not do, I do it in Your Will, to give You Divine and Complete Glory.”

“Jesus, I multiply myself in Your Gazes, so that I too may have as many gazes for as many times as You have looked at the creature with Love.  I multiply myself in Your Tears, so that I too may cry for all the sins of creatures, to be able to give You gazes of Divine Love and Divine Tears in the name of all, to give You Complete Glory and reparation for all the gazes of all creatures.”

VOLUME 13

 September 6, 1921

“My Love, I enter into Your Will, and here I find all the Thoughts of Your Mind and all those of creatures.  I surround Your Thoughts with my thoughts and with those of all my brothers, and then I unite them together, making them one in order to give You the Homage, the Adoration, the Glory, the Love, the Reparation of Your own Intelligence.”

VOLUME 19

 May 3, 1926

“Supreme Majesty, I come in the name of all, from the first to the last man which will exist on earth, to give You all the homages,

the adorations, the praises, the love that each creature owes You, and to make all reparations, for all and for each sin.”

 May 6, 1926

I was fusing myself in the Holy Divine Volition according to my usual way, and I prayed the Celestial Mama to be with me and to give me Her hand, so that, guided by Her, I might requite my God with all the love, the adoration and the glory that everyone owes Him.

August 8, 1926

“It is Your Love that Loves You, Your Adorations that Adore You, Your Prayers that Pray You; it is Your Will that, Investing me, makes me do what You do, to give it back to You as Your own Things.’”

 VOLUME 20

 October 15, 1926

“My Jesus, Your Will embraces and encloses everything, and I, in the name of the first creature that came out of Your Creative Hands, up to the last one that will be created, intend to repair for all the oppositions of the human wills made against Yours, and to take within me all the Acts of Your Adorable Will that the creatures have rejected, in order to return them all with Love and Adoration; in such a way that there may be no Act of Yours without the correspondence of one act of mine, so that, in finding my little act as though bilocated in each one of Your Acts, You may be satisfied, and may come to Reign Triumphantly upon earth.  Is it perhaps not true that Your Eternal Fiat wants to find in the human acts the support on which to dominate?  Therefore, in each one of Your Acts, I offer You mine as the Field on which You can lay Your Kingdom.”

October 24, 1926

I was doing my usual round in the Divine Volition, and in each thing I placed my “I love You”, asking that the Kingdom of the Fiat may come and be known upon earth. And reaching all the Acts that my Sweet Jesus did in Redemption, I asked, in each Act, for the coming of His Kingdom; and I thought to myself:  “Before, in going around so much, both in all Creation and in Redemption, I used to place only my ‘I love You,’ my adoration, my ‘thank You.’  And now, why can I not do without asking for the Kingdom of the Fiat?  I feel I would want to overwhelm everything – the most tiny and the greatest thing, Heaven and earth, the very Acts of Jesus and Jesus Himself – and force them, so that everything and everyone may say, together with me:  ‘We want the Kingdom of the Supreme Fiat. We want It Reigning and Dominating in our midst.’  More so, since all want It; the very Acts of Jesus, His Life, His Tears, His Blood, His Wounds, say from within: “May Our Kingdom come upon earth.” So I enter into the Act of Jesus, and I repeat along with it: “May the Kingdom of the Divine Fiat come soon.’”

November 2, 1926

“Sovereign Queen, I come to hide my little love in the great Sea of Your Love, my adoration toward God in the Immense Ocean of Yours.  I hide my thanksgivings in the Sea of Yours; I hide my supplications, my sighs, my tears and pains in the Sea of Yours, so that my sea of love and Yours may be one, my adoration and Yours may be one, my thanksgivings may acquire the vastness of Your own boundaries; my supplications, tears and pains may become one single sea with Yours, so that I too may have my seas of love, of adoration, etc.  And just as Your Sovereign Height impetrated the longed-for Redeemer with this, I too may present myself before the Divine Majesty with all these seas, in order to ask, to beseech – to implore the Kingdom of the Supreme Fiat.”

“My Queen Mama, I must use Your very Life, Your very Seas of Love and of Graces, to conquer It and make It concede Its Kingdom upon earth, just as You won over It to let the Eternal Word descend. Don’t You want to help Your little daughter, and give me Your Seas, to make me obtain that the Kingdom of the Supreme Fiat may come soon upon earth?”

 VOLUME 24

May 30, 1928

I was doing my round in the Divine Fiat, gathering the whole Creation, all together, in order to bring It before the Supreme Majesty as the most beautiful homage, the most profound adoration and the most intense and extensive love for He who had Created It.  It seemed to me that there was nothing more beautiful I could bring to my Creator than the Magnificence and the continuous Prodigy of His own Works.

Then, I continued on with my round, and I kept placing my Divine Fiat, not only in all Creation, but also in all the acts done by Adam in his state of innocence, in those done by the Virgin Queen, as well as in those done by Our Lord, sending them like an ordered army around the Divinity, to ask for Its Kingdom.

“Give me Your Divine Fiat.”

 July 23, 1928

Continuing in my usual abandonment in the Supreme Fiat, I wished to embrace everyone and everything, so that everything might become Divine Will…

Then, I was continuing my round in the Divine Volition to bring all created things to my Creator—heavens, sun and everything—as profound adoration to my God, and to be able to say to Him: “Heavens, stars, sun, sea You gave me, and I give You everything back as the requital of my love.”

VOLUME 29

 March 2, 1931

I was continuing my acts in the Divine Will, and I kept offering the sacrifices that the Saints of the Old Testament did, those of my Celestial Mama, all the Sacrifices of my Beloved Jesus, and so on with all the rest. The Divine Will placed them all in order for me, before my mind, and I kept offering them as the Most Beautiful Homage to my Creator.

Then, I continued my acts in the Divine Will; I wanted to embrace everything in order to place in each created thing my adoration, my love, my gratitude to He who had Loved me so much and had Created so many things for Love of me.

May 19, 1931

I was continuing my acts in the Divine Volition, and uniting myself to the Acts that It did in Creation, in order to give It the homage, the love, the adoration for each thing Created for Love of creatures.

 VOLUME 34

 March 18, 1937

I was doing my round in the Divine Fiat in order to follow, for as much as is possible for me, Its Divine Acts, that is to say, the Creation and all the holy acts of the creatures, not excluding those of my Celestial Mother, nor those of my dear Jesus. But the great thing was that as I retraced them, they made themselves mine.  The Divine Volition gave them to me, and I, as if I would have a right over everything, offered them to my Creator as the Most Beautiful Homage, the Most Intense Love, the Most Profound Adoration, to He who had Created me.  I felt myself invested by the sun, by the sky with all the stars, by the wind, by everything.  Everything was mine because everything was of the Divine Will.

VOLUME 35

 September 12, 1937

And I was wandering around in the blue vault, thinking to myself: “This Heaven serves as a vault for the residents of the earth, and as a pavement for the Celestial Residents.  So, since it serves everyone, all have the duty to adore the One who, with so much Love, Created this Celestial Vault to give to us.”  So I called all the Angels, the Saints and all the residents of the earth with me, so that all would return love, adoration, glory and thanksgiving to our Creator, for He Loved us so much that He gave us this Heaven.  In the Divine Will I could call and embrace everyone—as if all were one, they loved with me.

YEARNINGS FOR SANCTITY

By Luisa Piccarreta, the Little Daughter of the Divine Will
At the beginning of her mystical life

O Jesus, by your infinite Mercy, make me holy!

You demand of me to edify my family, my neighbor, my friends; You ask that I make virtue loved, that I draw souls to You.  And how can I ever make it, poor as I am, so lacking in fervor, humility and patience?  O please, for love of those souls, at least, who cost blood to your Heart, make me holy, O my God, make me holy.

But what need do I have to present to You so many reasons?  Are You not infinite Goodness and Generosity?  Could You, O beloved of my soul, allow that a daughter of yours, who opens her heart to You, entrusts to You her yearnings, asks You only that she may be holy, would remain prostrated before You without answering her?  Would You not listen to her in the greatness of your Mercy?

And even when, because of my constant ingratitude, You would want to reject me, could You deny this grace to your Blessed Mother Mary and mine, who asks You for it on my behalf, presenting all of Her compassion for your sorrows?  Could You deny it to my Guardian Angel, who continually offers You His celestial adorations in order to obtain it for me?

O Jesus, by your infinite Mercy, make me holy!

O my Jesus, I confess myself unworthy of any favor, but when I ask You that I may be holy, what do I ask of You, after all, other than that the designs of your Redemption be fulfilled in me, and that your goodness may triumph in my malice, in my rejections and in my reluctance?

O my Love, You are Omnipotent – set me afire, burn me to ashes, consume me in your flames, let it be that I may never again offend You!  That I may die to myself; that I may make of this little while of my life that is left one single act of expiation, of gratitude, of adoration and of apostolate – one single act of immolation and of most pure love.  O Jesus, may I live all absorbed in You, drawn and genuflected with my spirit, always before your Sacramental Majesty.  Even more, may I, O Jesus, truly live of your very Sacramental Eucharistic Life, which is all an affable mystery of hiddenness, of operosity and of love.

5/28 Our Lady of the Burning Fire

Our Lady of Ardents

May 29: Our Lady of Ardents, Arras, France (1095)

The Abbot Orsini wrote: “A wax candle is kept in the cathedral of Arras, which is held to have been brought thither by Our Lady, in the year 1095.”

Our Lady of Ardents, or Eglise Notre-Dame des Ardents d’Arras in French, is a small, charming red brick church in the lower part of town in Arras, France. It was built in the beautiful style unique to the twelfth century in order to celebrate the appearance of the Blessed Virgin, and to commemorate the miraculous assistance she gave to the people then living in the region.

According to Tradition, there was a terrible epidemic that was given the name ‘the hellfire’ that ravaged the countryside in that year of 1105, and all men felt that they were in the clutch of the specter of Death. The Evil of Ardent, the disease caused a kind of gangrene in the limbs, and the strange sickness caused terrible suffering in all parts of the body, and laid low both men and women, and even their children throughout the whole of the region.

There were at that time two minstrels, one named Itier, who lived in Brabant, and the other named Norman, who lived in the Chateau de Saint-Pol. They had vowed a mortal hatred, as Norman had killed Itier’s brother.

One night they both had the same dream: the Virgin Mary, dressed in white, appeared to them and told them to go to the cathedral. Norman, who was closer, arrived first. As he entered the cathedral he saw all the patients who had taken refuge there. He found the bishop and told him of the apparition, but Bishop Lambert thought that Norman was mocking him and sent him away. Itier arrived the following day and also spoke to the bishop. When the bishop told Itier that someone named Norman had come to tell him of the same vision, Itier asked where he was, because he intended to kill him on the field to avenge his brother’s death. Bishop Lambert then understood that the Blessed Virgin had sent the two men to be reconciled. The bishop spoke to each separately and then put them in each other’s presence and asked them to give each other the kiss of peace and then spend the night in prayer inside the cathedral.

It was Pentecost Sunday, May 28, 1105, at about three o’clock in the morning, when the Virgin Mary appeared to the two minstrels in the Cathedral. Norman and Itier witnessed a sudden light as the Blessed Virgin descended from the height of the nave, carrying a lighted candle in her hands. She gave the men the candle intended for the healing of the sick, and explained to them what they must do. A few drops of the wax that fell from the candle were to be mingled with water, giving it miraculous properties the people would then drink.

All who believed were healed. The two minstrels, now brothers, distributed the miraculous water and the epidemic was stopped, for the patients would regain their health after they drank of the water mixture. There were many prodigies of healing that went on for hundreds of years, especially with wounds, inflammations, and ulcers. All of this shows how reconciliation and prayer are pleasing to God and can precipitate great miracles, such as curing diseases, ending natural disasters, as well as ending or preventing wars.

The Bishop of Arras wanted to build a church worthy of Our Lady of Ardents and to receive the relic of the Holy Candle, and the church was consecrated in 1876 just before the definitive establishment of the Third Republic.

This relic, the Holy Candle, can still be seen today. On the eve of Corpus Christi and the four following days, the Holy Candle was lit and shown to the people. It has not diminished.

The reliquary of the Holy Candle is a masterpiece of art that preserves the relic of the Holy Candle since the time of the thirteenth century. The content of the reliquary has been the object of Christian veneration since the Middle Ages, and every year it is presented to pilgrims during the time period which runs between Ascension Thursday and Pentecost.

Notre-Dame des Ardents (Our Lady of the Burning Fire), Arras, Pas-de-Calais, France

Commemorated on May 28

Notre-Dame des Ardents (Our Lady of the Burning Fire), Arras, Pas-de-Calais, France

In 1105, a major epidemic of a raging fever (known as “burning fire”) began in the region of Arras that was claiming hundreds of lives. When the people called upon her praying, the Holy Mother of Heaven came to rescue. She appeared from the bell tower of the church and the bishop held out a large candle, symbol of both faith and healing. Whoever had drunk a little bit of this candle wax dissolved in water would be saved from the plague. Despite the widespread use, the candle has not been consumed and never even went out throughout the period of the epidemic. In 1140, in gratitude for the miraculous intervention of the Holy Virgin, the first votive chapel was erected in honor of “Notre Dame des Ardents (Our Lady of the Burning Fire ),” also called “Notre Dame de la Sainte Chandelle (Our Lady of the Holy Candle).”

THREE wounds that give Me (Jesus) mortal pain and such bitterness of sorrow as to surpass all the other wounds together.

“[First:]  These are the pains of My loving souls.

“The second mortal wound of My Heart is ingratitude.

“The third [wound] is obstinacy.  What mortal wound to My Heart!

“My daughter, the First Fiat was said in Creation without the intervention of any creature.

For completion of the Second Fiat I chose My Mama.

Now for the completion of both I want to say the Third Fiat, which will complete the glory [and] honor of the Fiat of Creation, as well as will be the confirmation and development of the fruits of the Fiat of Redemption.

These THREE Fiats will veil the Sacrosanct Trinity on the earth, and I will have the Fiat Voluntas tua, come in Cielo cosi in terra.  These THREE Fiats will be inseparable; one will be life of the other.  They will be One and Triune, but distinct among themselves.

“These THREE Fiats have the same value and power.

“My daughter, these THREE ‘Fiats’ are the Creating, the Redeeming, [and] the Sanctifying [Fiats].  In creating man I endowed him with THREE powers—intellect, memory, and will.  Moreover, with THREE ‘Fiats’ I will complete the work of the sanctification of man.

“This generation will not end if My Will does not reign on the earth.  My Redeeming Fiat will put Itself in the middle, between the Creating Fiat and the Sanctifying Fiat.  The THREE will mix together and will complete the sanctification of man.  The Third ‘Fiat’ will give such grace to the creature as to make her return as if to her state of origin.  And then, when I have seen man as he came forth from Me, My work will be complete and I will take My perpetual repose in My last ‘Fiat.’  Only life in My Volition will restore man to his state of origin.

I stayed in prison THREE hours.  In so doing, I wanted to restore the THREE epochs of the world: the law of nature, the written law, and the law of Grace.  I wanted to free everyone, reunite everyone, and give them the freedom that belongs to my sons.  By staying THREE hours, I wanted to restore the THREE stages of man: childhood, youth, and old age.

Luisa’s 3 affirmations:

I was saying my usual prayers when my ever-loving Jesus, surprising me from behind, called out my name and said: “Luisa, daughter of my Will, do you want to live always in my Will?”

            I replied: “Yes, oh Jesus.”

He said: “But do you truly want to live in my Will?”

I replied: “Truly, my love.  Besides, I would neither recognize nor adapt to any other will.”

And again Jesus said: “But…do you mean it certainly?”

Then, feeling confused and almost fearful, I added: “Jesus my life, you frighten me with these questions.  Explain Yourself better.  I say it with certainty, but always aided by You and with the strength of your Will, which envelops me so that I could not but live in your Will.”

He gave a sigh of relief and continued:

“How happy your THREE affirmations make Me!  Fear not, they are but reaffirmations and confirmations to seal in you the triple seal of the Volition of the THREE Divine Persons.

Jesus in the Garden:

Suffering was I crying out? Ah, no!  You are deceiving yourself if you think that. I loved suffering to the point of folly; I loved death in order to give Life to my children.

That was the cry of all the human family together echoing in my Humanity.  I, crying out together with them, repeated THREE times: ‘If it is possible, let this chalice pass from Me!’ I cried out in the name of all humanity in so far as all humanity was a part of Me, and I felt oppressed and crushed.

Now I come to you.  After calling my Celestial Mother I called you so that all human acts would have THREE seals: the first seal given by Me, the second seal given by my Mother, and the third seal given by an ordinary creature.

3 Types of Bread:

“Our Will, seeing the great value in acting as one in THREE distinct Persons, also wants to act as one in THREE distinct persons on earth:  the Mother, the Son, and the Bride.  From these THREE persons other seas of happiness will flow, bringing immense good to all wayfarers.”

, I beseech You for THREE kinds of daily bread.  The first is the bread of your Will; .  Father, without this Bread of your Will, I will never be able to receive all the fruits of my Sacramental Life, which is the second kind of bread I ask You for every day.  “After that I asked for the third bread, which is material bread.

THREE times has the Divinity decided to work ‘ad extra’:  the first was in the Creation, and this was without the intervention of any creature, since none had come yet forth to the light of day; the second was Redemption, which involved the intervention of a woman, my Heavenly Mother, who was the holiest and most beautiful of all, and the channel and the instrument I used to accomplish the work of the Redemption; the third is the fulfillment of my Will, that It may be done on earth as It is in Heaven, so that the creature live and work with the Holiness and the Power of our Will,

“From then on I formed the epic of the Fiat Voluntas Tua upon the earth; and by saying it for [a] THREE times, in the first I impetrated, and in the second I made It descend, and in the third I formed It reigning and dominating.  And as I said ‘Non mea voluntas, sed tua fiat,’ I intended to empty creatures of their will, and fill them with the Divine.

3 in the creation of man

…in creating man, formed diverse ways of communication between the Creator and the creature, ways that form the THREE powers of the soul:  Intelligence, the means to understand my Will; memory, means to always remember It; and the will.  The middle of the first two ways formed the third way to fly in the Will of its Creator.  The intelligence and the memory were the help, the defense and the strength of the way of the will, because they could not deviate either to the right or to the left.

“The mission of my Volition will reflect the most Holy Trinity upon the earth.  And as in Heaven there are the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, inseparable yet distinct among themselves, who form all the beatitude of Heaven, so also on earth there will be THREE persons who for their mission will be distinct and inseparable among themselves:  The Virgin with her Maternity, which reflects the Paternity of the Celestial Father and encloses his Power to fulfill the mission of Mother of the Eternal Word and Co-Redemptrix of the human race; my Humanity, for the mission of Redeemer, enclosed in the Divinity of the Word, without ever separating Itself from the Father and Holy Spirit, manifesting my Celestial Wisdom, adding the bond to make Me inseparable from my Mother; and you for the mission of my Will.  In you the Holy Spirit will make his Love overflow, manifesting to you the secrets, the prodigies of my Will, the goods It contains, to make happy those who will want to know how much good this Supreme Will contains and who want to love It and have It reign in them.  They will offer their souls to let It inhabit their own hearts and form its Life in them.  And the bond of inseparability among you, the Mother and the Eternal Word will remain.

The 3 missions:

“These THREE missions are distinct and inseparable.  With extraordinary suffering the first two have prepared the grace, the light, the work and everything for the third mission—the mission of my Will—to fuse both in It so as to find Its repose, because my Will alone is celestial repose.

And glory to Mary; and THREE times Holy, She who has let this Supreme Will operate!’

The course of my thirty-THREE years was not sufficient, nor were the creatures prepared, disposed, to foresee a food so delicate that I gave to all Heaven;

THREE Divine Persons; It placed in him THREE motions which were to murmur continuously, to unite with that continuous motion and murmuring of love of their Creator.  And these are:  the motion of the beating of the heart which never ceases, the circulation of the blood which always flows without ever ceasing, the breathing of the breath which never stops.  This, in the body; in the soul there are THREE more motions which murmur continuously:  the intellect, the memory and the will.

But in order to manifest to the peoples the coming of Myself, Word of the Father, upon earth, I wanted and used royal authorities, learned and erudite men, so that, by their authority, they might diffuse the knowledges of the incarnate God and, eventually, also impose themselves to the peoples.  In spite of this, the star was seen by everyone, yet only THREE of them move, pay attention and follow it.

Then I will have THREE Kingdoms – one in the Celestial Fatherland, another in the Creation, and the third among the creatures – and each one will be the echo of the other, each one the reflection of the other.

.  For your Jesus there will no longer be difference between staying in the Celestial Fatherland, and descending to be in the midst of creatures in the Kingdom of the Supreme Fiat upon earth.  Then, Our work of Creation will sing victory and full triumph, and We will have THREE Kingdoms in one – symbol of the Sacrosanct Trinity, because all of Our works carry the mark of the One who created them.”

The THREE Appeals

1)   The Divine Appeal

With His Father and the Holy Spirit, the Divine King appeals to His children on earth to come now and enter into the Kingdom of His Will.

2)   THE MATERNAL APPEAL

THE APPEAL OF THE QUEEN OF HEAVEN FOR HER CHILDREN TO COME INTO THE KINGDOM OF THE DIVINE WILL  From “The Virgin Mary in the Kingdom of the Divine Will”

3)   Luisa’s Appeal

And in the first place, I appeal to the HIGHEST HIERARCH, to the ROMAN PONTIFF, to HIS HOLINESS, to the representative of the Holy Church, and therefore the representative of the KINGDOM OF THE DIVINE WILL. At his holy feet, this little, tiny child places this Kingdom, so that he dominate It and make It known, and with his paternal and authoritative voice, call his sons to live in this Kingdom so holy.

May the Sun of the SUPREME “FIAT” invest him and form the first Sun of the Divine Volition in Its Representative on earth; and forming Its primary Life in Him who is the Head of all, It will spread Its interminable rays in all the world; and eclipsing all with Its Light, It will form one flock and one Shepherd

The second appeal I make to all PRIESTS. Prostrate at the feet of each one, I pray, I implore them to interest themselves in knowing the Divine Will. Take your first movement, your first act from It; rather, enclose yourselves in the “FIAT,” and you will feel how sweet and dear Its Life is. Draw from It all your workings; you will feel a Divine strength in you, a voice that always speaks, that will say admirable things to you that you have never heard. You will feel a light that will eclipse all your evils, and eclipsing the peoples, will give you the dominion over them.   How many labors you do without fruit, because the Life of the Divine Will is lacking. You have broken a bread for the peoples without the leaven of the “FIAT”; and they therefore, in eating it, have found it hard, almost indigestible; and not feeling the Life in themselves, they do not submit to your teachings. Therefore, you eat this bread of the Divine “FIAT!” Thus you will have sufficient bread to give to the peoples. Thus you will form with all, one single Life and one single Will.

The third appeal I make to all, to the entire world, for you are all my brothers and sisters and my children. Do you know why I am calling all?  Because I want to give to all the Life of the Divine Will. This is more than air that we can all breathe. It is as Sun from which we can all receive the good of the light; It is as palpitation of the heart that wants to beat in all. And, as a little baby, I want, I yearn for you to take the Life of the “FIAT”…Oh, if you knew how many goods you would receive; you would consume your life to make It reign in all of you! This little, tiny one wants to tell you another secret that Jesus has confided to her; and I tell you it so that you give me your will, and in exchange you will receive that of God which will make you happy in soul and in body.

HOLY TRINITY ON EARTH

Volume 17 – May 4, 1925

The mission of the Divine Will, will veil the Most Holy Trinity upon earth, and will make man return to his origin.

After writing what is written above, I began to do the adoration to my Crucified Jesus, fusing all of myself in His Most Holy Will; and my beloved Jesus came out from within my interior, and placing His most holy face close to mine, all tenderness, told me:  “My daughter, did you write everything on the mission of my Will?”  And I:  ‘Yes, yes, I wrote everything.’  And He, again:  “And what if I told you that you have not written everything?  Rather, you have left out the most essential thing.  So, continue writing, and add:  ‘The mission of my Will will veil the Most Holy Trinity upon earth.  Just as in Heaven there are the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, inseparable from One Another but distinct among Themselves, forming the whole beatitude of Heaven; in the same way, on earth there will be three persons who, because of their missions, will be distinct and inseparable among themselves:  the Virgin, with Her Maternity which veils the Paternity of the Celestial Father and encloses His power in order to fulfill Her mission of Mother of the Eternal Word and Co-Redemptrix of mankind; my Humanity, for the mission of Redeemer, which enclosed the Divinity, and the Word, without ever separating from the Father and from the Holy Spirit, manifested my celestial wisdom – adding the bond of rendering Myself inseparable from my Mama; and you, for the mission of my Will, as the Holy Spirit will make display of His love, manifesting to you the secrets, the prodigies of my Will, the goods It contains, to make happy those who will give themselves to knowing how much good this Supreme Will contains, to love It and to let It reign in their midst, offering their souls to let It dwell within their hearts, that It may be able to form Its Life in them – adding the bond of inseparability between you, the Mother and the Eternal Word.

These three missions are distinct and inseparable.  The first two have prepared the graces, the light, the work, and with unheard-of pains, for the third mission of my Will, to then fuse themselves all in It without leaving their office, so as to find rest, because my Will alone is celestial rest.  These missions will not be repeated, because the exuberance of grace, of light, of knowledge is such and so great that all human generations can be filled with them; even more, they will not be able to contain all the good which they contain.  These missions are symbolized by the sun; in fact, in creating it, I filled it with so much light and heat, that all human generations have superabundant light.  Nor did I consider that, since at the beginning of creation there were only Adam and Eve who would enjoy it, I could place the necessary light for them only, to then increase new light as the generations would grow.  No, no – I made it full of light, just as it is now, and will be.  For the decorum and the honor of Our power, wisdom and love, Our works are always done with the fullness of all the good which they contain; nor are they subject to increasing or decreasing.  So I did with the sun:  I centralized in it all the light which was to serve up to the last man.  But how many goods does the sun not do for the earth?  What glory, in its mute light, does it not give to its Creator?  I can say that because of the immense goods it does to the earth, in its mute language the sun glorifies Me and makes Me known more than all other things together; and this, because it is full in its light, and stable in its course.  When I looked at the sun which, with so much light, only Adam and Eve were enjoying, I also looked at all the living; and in seeing that that light was to serve all, my paternal goodness exulted with joy, and I remained glorified in my works.  So I did with my Mama:  I filled Her with so much grace, that She can give graces to all without ever exhausting even one of them.  So I did with my Humanity:  there is no good which It does not possess; It enclosed everything, and the very Divinity, to give It to whomever wants of It.  So I did with you:  I enclosed in you my Will, and, with It, I enclosed Myself.  I enclosed in you Its knowledges, Its secrets, Its light.  I filled your soul up to the brim; so much so, that what you write is nothing other than the outpouring of what you contain of my Will.  And even though it now serves you alone, and a few glimmers of light serve a few others, I am content because, being light, more than second sun, it will make its way by itself, in order to illuminate the human generations and to bring about the fulfillment of Our works:  that Our Will be known and loved, and that It reign as life in the creatures.  This was the purpose of Creation – this, its beginning, and this will be the means and the end.

Therefore, be attentive, because this is about placing in safety that Eternal Will which, with so much love, wants to dwell in the creatures.  But It wants to be known, It does not want to be like a stranger, but wants to give Its goods and become Life of each one.  However, It wants Its rights, Its place of honor; It wants the human will to be put aside – the only enemy for Itself and for man.  The mission of my Will was the purpose of the creation of man.  My Divinity did not depart from Heaven – from Its throne, while my Will not only departed, but descended into all created things and formed Its Life in them.  But while all things recognized Me, and I dwell in them with majesty and decorum, man alone drove Me away.  But I want to conquer him and win him, and therefore my mission is not ended.  So I called you, entrusting to you my own mission, that you may place the one who drove Me away on the lap of my Will, and everything may return to Me in my Will.  Therefore, do not be surprised at the many great and marvelous things I may tell you for the sake of this mission, or at the many graces I may give you; because this is not about making a Saint, or saving the generations.  This is about placing a Divine Will in safety, that all may return to the beginning, to the origin from which all came, and that the purpose of my Will may have its fulfillment.’”

Catholic Doctrine on the Holy Trinity

by Fr. John A. Hardon, S.J.

The mystery of the Holy Trinity is the most fundamental of our faith. On it everything else depends and from it everything else derives. Hence the Church’s constant concern to safeguard the revealed truth that God is One in nature and Three in Persons.

In order to do some justice to this sublime subject, we shall look only briefly at the heretical positions that at various periods of the Church’s history challenged the revealed Trinitarian faith. Our principal intention is to see in sequence the development of the doctrine, with emphasis on how the Church’s authority has contributed to the progress in understanding the plurality of persons in the one true God.

There is also great value in seeing some of the implications of the doctrine for our personal and social lives, since the mystery was most extensively revealed by Christ during the same discourse at the Last Supper when He taught us the “New Commandment” by which we are to love one another as He has been loving us.

Trinitarian Heresies

There is a certain logic in the adversative positions assumed by those who called into question one or another aspect of the Trinity. Not surprisingly the human mind has wrestled with what God revealed about Himself in His inner Trinitarian existence. And depending on the willingness to recognize its limitations, the intellect has been enlightened by what God says about His mysterious being.

Thus we have, on the one hand, such extensive treatises as St. Augustine’s De Trinitate that show how perfectly compatible is the mystery of the Triune God with the deepest reaches of human intelligence. Indeed, the better the Trinity is understood, the more the human mind expands its horizons and the better it understands the world that the Trinity has created.

At the same time, we have the spectacle of another phenomenon. Minds that are not fully docile to the faith have, in greater or less measure, resisted the unquestioning acceptance of the Trinity. From apostolic times to the present, they have struggled with themselves and in their misguided effort to “explain” the mystery have only rationalized their own ideas of what the mystery should be.

For the sake of convenience, we can capsulize the leading anti-Trinitarian teachings of Christian history. Although given here somewhat chronologically, they are all very current because one or another, or a combination of several, may be found in contemporary writings in nominally Christian sources. There is no such thing as an antiquated doctrinal error, as correspondingly there is no such thing as an entirely new heresy. Error has its own remarkable consistency.

Monarchianism

By the end of the first century, certain Judaizing Christians lapsed into a pre-Christian notion of God. According to them God is simply unipersonal. Such were the Corinthians and the Ebionites.

Within the next hundred years these theories were systemized into what has since become known as Monarchianism, i.e., monos = one + archein = to rule, which postulates only one person in God. In practice, however, Monarchianism affected certain positions regarding the nature and person of Christ; and these were the ones that finally had to be countered by the Church’s Magisterium.

If there is only one person in God, then the Son of God did not become man except as the embodiment of an adopted son of God. According to the Adoptionists, Christ was a mere man, though miraculously conceived of the Virgin Mary. At Christ’s baptism, He was endowed by the Father with extraordinary power and was then specially adopted by God as son. Among others, the best known Adoptionist was Paul of Samosata.

Another group of Monarchians took the view that Christ was divine. But then it was the Father who became incarnate, who suffered and died for the salvation of the world. Those favoring this idea were called Patripassionists, which literally means “Father-sufferers,” meaning that Christ was only symbolically the son of God, since it was the Father Himself who became man. On this hypothesis, of course, the Father, too, is only symbolically Father, since He does not have a natural Son.

The best known Patripassionist was Sabellius, who gave his name to a still popular Christological heresy, Sabellianism. According to Sabellius, there is in God only one hypostasis (person) but three prosopa, literally “masks” or “roles” that the unipersonal God assumes. These three roles correspond to the three modes or ways that God manifests Himself to the world. Hence another name for this theory is Modalism.

In the Modalist system, God manifests Himself, in the sense of reveals Himself, as the Father in creation, as the Son in redemption, and as the Holy Spirit in sanctification. There are not really three distinct persons in God but only three ways of considering God from the effects He has produced in the world.

Subordinationism

Unlike the foregoing, Subordinationism admits there are three persons in God but denies that the second and third persons are consubstantial with the Father. Therefore it denies their true divinity. There have been different forms of Subordinationism, and they are still very much alive, though not all easily recognizable as Trinitarian errors in which the mind tries to comprehend how one single infinitely perfect divine nature can be three distinct persons, each equally and completely God.

The Arians, named after the Alexandrian priest Arius, held that the Logos or Word of God does not exist from eternity. Consequently there could not have been a generation of the Son from the Father but only by the Father. The Son is a creature of the Father and to that extent a “son of God.” He came into existence from nothing, having been willed by the Father, although as “the first born of all creation,” the Son came into the world before anything else was created.

The Semi-Arians tried to avoid the extreme of saying that Christ was totally different from the Father by conceding that He was similar to or like the Father, hence the name Homoi-ousians, i.e., homoios = like = ousia = nature, by which they are technically called.

There was lastly the group of Macedonians, named after Bishop Macedonius (deposed in 360 AD), who extended the notion of subordination to the Holy Spirit, who was claimed not to be divine but a creature. They were willing to admit that the Holy Spirit was a ministering angel of God.

Tritheism

At the other extreme to saying there was only one person in God was the heresy that held (and holds) there are really three gods. Certain names stand out.

According to John Philoponus (565 AD), nature and person are to be identified, or, in his language ousia = hypostasis. There are then three persons in God who are three individuals of the Godhead, just as we would speak of three human beings and say there are three individuals of the species man. Thus instead of admitting a numerical unity of the divine nature among the three persons in God, this theory postulates only a specific unity, i.e., one species but not one numerical existence.

In the theory of Roscelin (1120 AD), a Nominalist, only the individual is real. So the three persons in God are actually three separate realities. St. Anselm wrote extensively against this error.

Gilbert of Poitiers (1154 AD) said there is a real difference between God and the Divinity. As a result there would be a quaternity, i.e., three persons and the Godhead.

Abbot Joachim of Fiore (1202 AD) claimed that there is only a collective unity of the three persons in God, to form the kind of community we have among human beings, i.e., a gathering of like-minded persons joined together by their freedom to work together on a common enterprise. Joachim of Fiore is also known in doctrinal history as the one who projected the idea of three stages in Christian history. Stage One was the Age of the Father, through Old Testament times; Stage Two was the Age of the Second Person, the Son, which lasted from the time of the Incarnation to the Middle Ages; Stage Three began about the time of Abbot Joachim and will continue to the end of the world, as the Age of the Holy Spirit.

Anton Guenther (1873) was deeply infected with Hegelian pantheism and proclaimed a new Trinity. Guenther said that the Absolute freely determined Itself three successive times in an evolutionary process of development as thesis, antithesis, and synthesis. So the divine substance is trebled.

Post-Reformation Protestantism

The original Reformers affirmed the Trinity without qualification. Thus Luther and Calvin, and the sixteenth century confessions of Protestant faith uniformly attested to the Trinity of Persons in God. But the subjectivism of the Protestant principles paved the way to a gradual attrition of the faith, so that rationalism has made deep inroads into the denominations. The most common form of this rationalism takes the three persons in God as only three personifications of the divine attributes, e.g., divine power is personified by the Father, divine wisdom by the Son, and divine goodness by the Holy Spirit.

In this context, we may define rationalism as that system of thought that claims that the human mind cannot hold with certainty what it cannot understand. Since the Trinity cannot be fully understood, it cannot therefore be held to be certain.

Teaching of the Church

The history of the Church’s doctrine on the Trinity reaches back to the earliest days of Christianity. Our purpose here is to see in review some of the leading statements of the Magisterium, while pointing out some features of each document.

Pope St. Dionysius in 259 AD wrote a public letter to Bishop Dionysius of Alexandria in which he condemned the errors of Sabellius and the tritheist Marcion. The significance of this document lies in the fact that it paved the way for the Church’s later teaching, notably in the famous councils that dealt with the person of Christ. The popes led the way in defending the revealed mystery of the Trinity and in explaining its meaning, long before ecumenical councils entered the controversy. Even a few sentences from the pope’s letter will show the intransigence of the Church and her sureness of mind about the Trinity:

Sabellius’ blasphemy is that the Son is the Father, and the Father the Son. These men somehow teach there are three gods since they divine the sacred unity into three different hypostases completely separate from one another.

The teaching of the foolish Marcion who divides and separates the one God into three principles is a teaching from the devil, not the teaching of those who truly follow Christ and who are content with the teachings of the Savior.

At the Council of Nicea (325 AD), the Second Person was declared to be consubstantial with the Father, where the term homo-ousios became the consecrated word for expressing perfect numerical identity of nature between the Father and His Son who became incarnate.

But Nicea did not settle the controversy. Speculators, especially in the Near East, insisted on probing and rationalizing the Trinity so that in 382 AD Pope St. Damasus called a council at Rome in which he summarized the main errors up to his time. Called the Tome of Damasus, this collection of anathemas is a series of definitions on the Trinity that to this day are models of clarity. Twenty-four in number, a sample from the collection again reflects the Church’s perennial faith:

If anyone denies that the Father is eternal, that the Son is eternal, and that the Holy Spirit is eternal: he is a heretic.

If anyone says that the Son made flesh was not in heaven with the Father while He was on earth: he is a heretic.

If anyone denies that the Holy Spirit has all power and knows all things, and is everywhere, just as the Father and the Son: he is a heretic.

The most extensive declaration of the Church’s teaching on the Trinity was made at the Eleventh Synod of Toledo in Spain (675 AD). It is a mosaic of texts drawn from all the preceding doctrines of the Church. Its purpose was to assemble as complete a list of doctrinal statements as possible, in view of the still prevalent errors in nominally Christian circles, and (providentially) in view of the rise of Islam which struck with particular vehemence against the Iberian peninsula. Since the main target of Moslem opposition to Christianity was the Koranic claim that Christians were idolaters because they adored Christ as God, it is instructive to see how the faithful were prepared to resist the Moslem Unitarianism by a clear declaration of their own belief in the Triune God. The full text of doctrine at Toledo runs to over two thousand words. Only a few lines will be given to illustrate the tone:

We confess and we believe that the holy and indescribable Trinity, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit is one only God in His nature, a single substance, a single nature, a single majesty and power.

We acknowledge Trinity in the distinction of persons; we profess Unity because of the nature or substance. The three are one, as a nature, that is, not as person. Nevertheless, these three persons are not to be considered separable, since we believe that no one of them existed or at any time effected anything before the other, after the other, or without the other.

Two general councils of the Church formulated the faith in the Trinity in specific creeds, namely the Fourth Lateran and the Council of Florence.

The focus of Fourth Lateran was twofold, to reaffirm the faith in the face of the Albigensian heresy and to defend it against the vagaries of Abbot Joachim.

Since the Albigenses were Manichaens, for whom there were two ultimate sources of the universe, one a good principle and the other an evil one, Lateran declared the absolute oneness of God, who is at the same time Triune:

We firmly believe and profess without qualification that there is only one true God, eternal, immense, unchangeable, incomprehensible, omnipotent, and indescribable, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit; three persons but one essence and a substance or nature that is wholly simple.

The Father is from no one; the Son is from the Father only; and the Holy Spirit is from both the Father and the Son equally. God has no beginning; He always is, and always will be. The Father is the progenitor, the Son is the begotten, the Holy Spirit is proceeding. They are all one substance, equally great, equally all-powerful, equally eternal. They are the one and only principle of all things—Creator of all things visible and invisible, spiritual and corporeal, who, by His almighty power, from the very beginning of time has created both orders of creatures in the same way out of nothing, the spiritual or angelic worlds and the corporeal or visible universe.

Abbot Joachim had a plurality of gods. In his effort to explain how the persons in the Trinity are distinct, he made them so separate that he ended up making them separate deities. Joachim’s problem was transferring what happens in human generation, when something of the parent goes over to the offspring, and is thereby distinct. He pressed the analogy too far and fell into error.

In response to this, the Fourth Lateran Council used the most technical language to insist that there is no division in God just because there is a distinction of persons:

The Father in eternally begetting the Son gave Him His own substance as the Son Himself testifies, “What my Father has given me is greater than all.” But it cannot be said that He gave Him part of His substance, and retained part for Himself, because the substance of the Father is indivisible, since it is altogether simple. Neither can one say that the Father transferred His own substance in generation to the Son, as though He gave it to the Son in such a way that He did not retain it for Himself; otherwise He would cease to be a substance.

The situation at the Council of Florence (1442 AD) was different. Here the need was to state the constant teaching of the Church with a view to reuniting the Eastern and Western Churches, separated by the Eastern Schism.

One feature of Florence, however, that needed to be clarified was brought about by the addition to the Nicene Creed of the expression Filioque, i.e. “and from the Son,” which Rome had approved. The Roman Creed now read, “the Holy Spirit, who proceeds from the Father and the Son.” The Easterners were uncomfortable with the addition, saying that Rome had tampered with a general council. The issue at stake was the true divinity of the Holy Spirit and the true divinity of the Second Person. Consequently, the Council of Florence, in the long Trinitarian Creed that it issued, stated as follows:

The Father is entirely in the Son and entirely in the Holy Spirit; the Son is entirely in the Father and entirely in the Holy Spirit; the Holy Spirit is entirely in the Father and entirely in the Son. None of the persons precedes any of the others in eternity, nor does any have greater immensity or greater power. From eternity, without beginning, the Son is from the Father; and from eternity and without beginning, the Holy Spirit has proceeded from the Father and the Son.

Human language could not be clearer, and there the faith of the Church stands to day and will until the end of time. Since the Council of Florence, popes and councils have simply drawn on the elaborate and absolutely unambiguous teaching of Sacred Tradition to offer the faithful for acceptance what is at once the glory of Catholic Christianity and its greatest revealed mystery.

Principal Implications

As we are learning today, faith in the Trinity is the basic test of our Catholic faith as Christians. This is not merely to say that objectively this doctrine is the most fundamental. It is. But subjectively, from our side, it is also the most crucial because it represents the hardest demand on our creedal assent.

All natural knowledge leads us to see only specific unity among human beings. We have one human nature, indeed, but we are only specifically one as distinct persons. We are really distinct as persons but we are also separate realities. Not so with the Trinity. Each of the divine Persons is the infinite God, and no one Person has only a “share” in the divine nature, a part of it so to speak. Yet they are not three infinities, but only one infinite God.

Relative to generation, all natural knowledge tells us that the parenthood and offspring imply a before and after generation, they imply a producer and a produced, a cause and effect. Not so in the eternal generation of the Son of God by the Father.

All natural knowledge tells us that while love is “outgoing” it does not literally give rise to a third person who is at once distinct from the two who love and numerically one with them in nature. Yet this is the case with God, where the Holy Spirit is declared by the Church as “the Love or the Sanctity of both the Father and the Son.” He proceeds from them without being another god.

But the Trinity is more than a test of our faith. It is also the perfect model of our selfless love. As revelation tells us, within the Godhead is a plurality of Persons, so that God is defined as Love because He has within His own being, to use our language, the object of love which is an Other with whom each of the Persons can share the totality of their being.

We therefore see from reflection on this Triune Love that love by its essence is not self-centered, that love unites, that love gives, and that love shares perfectly within the Godhead. Love is therefore as perfect in us as it approximates the perfect sharing that constitutes the Trinity.

At the same time, we recall that, while perfectly selfless in their mutual sharing of the divine nature, the Persons in the Trinity do not thereby cease to be themselves. Again, this is a lesson for us. We are to give of ourselves generously and without stinting. Nevertheless we are also to give in such a way that we remain ourselves and not become, as it were, something else in the process of sharing. There is such a thing as calculating charity, when a person gives of himself but “not too much” because he fears that his love may be too costly. This is not the teaching of Christ, who told us to love others not only as much as we love ourselves but as much as He loves us.

Saying this, however, is not to say that charity should not be wise. It would be unwise if it deprived us of that which God wants us to be and made us less than we are expected to be. Charity must, therefore, be enlightened; it must be guided by the standard of the Trinity, where each of the divine Persons gives and shares perfectly, yet without ceasing to be what each Person is to be. The Father does not become less the Father in begetting the Son and thus totally sharing the divine nature; nor do Father and Son cease to be themselves although they completely share their divinity with the Holy Spirit.

We thus have a confluence of two mysteries, of the Trinity in heaven and of liberty on earth. The Trinity is the pattern for our liberty. If we use our freedom to love others as we should, modeled on the Triune God, we shall reach that God in eternity. This is our hope, based on our faith, and conditioned by our love.

OUR LADY OF AMERICA

SPRAWLING COMPLEX IN INDIANA HAS CHAPEL WHERE ‘OUR LADY OF AMERICA’ APPEARED

by Michael H. Brown

The chapel is in a huge building that once served as both a convent and healing center and it is here, in America’s heartland, in a sprawling complex, amid cornfields that are still farmed by Amish, that the apparitions now known as “Our Lady of America” first allegedly occurred [see previous stories].

This is Sylvan Springs, Indiana (right outside Rome City, about an hour northwest of Fort Wayne), and to visit it, to tour this place that had once been run by nuns known as the Order of the Precious Blood — but later fell into the hands of a cult —  is to feel a century of spiritual turbulence.

It was on September 25, 1956, as she was making her Holy Hour between 7 and 8 p.m., that a Precious Blood nun named Sister Mildred Mary Ephrem Neuzil felt a presence by her side as she was praying in the chapel and caught a glance of a white gown and blue sash. “I was under the impression that she came as Our Lady of Lourdes, and she herself confirmed this,” Sister Mildred later wrote of the Virgin (who promised that miracles even greater than those granted at Lourdes and Fatima were possible here in America and in particular the United States if it did as she desired, if it came back to purity, if it cherished its young, and if it met a special request to establish a statue of the apparition in the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington).

Although that first announcement was more a locution than a full-scale apparition, the next day, in this same chapel — just after Mass, on the feast of the North American Martyrs — the Virgin again allegedly appeared before the end of the community’s prayers of thanksgiving. She was all in white with a lily and enveloped in a “soft glow.”

It was not the first time Sister Mildred had seen the Virgin Mary; indeed, her visions went back 18 years, and she was only here at Sylvan Springs for three months. Most of her mysticism occurred in Ohio.

But it was in this chapel that Mary announced herself as “Our Lady of America” in an apparition that received the assistance and preliminary approval of a man who would become archbishop of Cincinnati.

No one is exactly sure where the apparitions occurred. The greatest likelihood seems to be a small west wing of the chapel. All we know is that Sister Mildred was sitting in one of the standard high-backed wood pews that are still stored at the site and that in the years since the devil has done everything in his power to quash this apparition. In the 1970s the land was sold by the order to a cult called The Way. They stripped the chapel of its statues, covered the stained glass with boards, and used the domed tabernacle, now damaged, for storage.

Their ghosts still haunt the place; there is a raging spiritual war. It’s a microcosm of the world. It’s a microcosm of the U.S. Of late Larry Young, a devout and courageous Catholic businessman from Chicago, has purchased the 196-acre plot, seeking to restore the chapel, turn the rest of the 175-room building into a retreat center, as well as develop the land into a center for baseball tournaments. He has spent $300,000 of his own money on renovations so far. He hopes to draw youth and expose them to the grace of the Virgin — helped in this endeavor by an equally courageous 85-year-old priest named Father Robert J. Hoevel and small groups of rosary-praying pilgrims who pray 15 decades at the site in beautiful candlelit ceremonies. Last December 8, Mass was held here for the first time in a quarter century.

They are trying to reclaim the land and I also stood there, prayed, and threw Holy Water. I also tried to discern. Could it be possible? Is this where the United States’ first preliminarily approved apparition occurred? Would its request of instituting a statue in Washington, D.C. — turning the national shrine into a place of pilgrimage — one day occur?

And would the demons that haunt America be chased away as they are now chasing away the spirits that have afflicted this place in Indiana?

I wondered at the small arches, the nine smaller stained glass windows that are in the west wing, and at how in the midst of the apparition Sister Mildred became aware that the other sisters were leaving the chapel and that in obedience she also had to. “I said to Our Lady, `Please forgive me, Mother, but I do have to go now or my work will not be finished.’ “

The Virgin understood but when Sister Mildred returned to her room upstairs, Mary was waiting for her.

I retraced this. I took the 16 or so steps from the chapel to a back stairway that led up to what are now long lonely corridors where cell after cell served as home to sisters of the Precious Blood and where in one — no one knows exactly which — Sister Mildred again saw the Virgin with a lily as Mary watched the nun dutifully perform her chores.

On the afternoon of the same day during the last half of another Holy Hour Mary had reportedly spoken again. “My child. I entrust you with this message that you must make known to my children in America. I wish it to be the country dedicated to my purity. The wonders I will work will be the wonders of the soul. They must have faith and believe firmly in my love for them. I desire that they be the children of my Pure Heart. Let them come to me with confidence and simplicity, and I, their Mother, will teach them to become pure like to my Heart that their own hearts may be more pleasing to the Heart of my Son.”

There were other apparitions. There were other times she appeared here to Sister Mildred. At least two others occurred on October 5 and October 13. Now, they claim phenomena is occurring again. I don’t know how to discern this. I urge caution. Nothing should be done without great spiritual protection. I heard accounts of the sun spinning, of a mysterious blue butterfly, of a light that seemed to descend one night we were there and according to a teenaged woman formed into a blue light with the Virgin in it — then left like a red comet.

These reports are likely to continue. Once more, great caution must be used.

But this we know for sure: a spiritual battle rages and when that happens it’s a call to arms. We’re asked by God to take back what has been sullied by Satan. We’re asked to reclaim our chapels and churches and youth from the clutches of the evil one.

Not just here. Everywhere.

“I desire to make the whole of America my shrine by making every heart accessible to the love of my Son,” Our Lady of America had said, adding this prayer right around the time she was in Rome City: “By thy Holy and Immaculate Conception, O Mary, deliver us from evil”!

If we say that enough, the darkness will not only leave this place but the rest of our nation as well.
