ST. PADRE PIO AND LUISA PICCARRETA

an excerpt from the book
LUISA PICCARRETA collection of memories of the Servant of God
BERNARDINO GIUSEPPE BUCCI, O.F.M.
Blessed Padre Pio, Luisa Piccarreta and Rosaria Bucci
Luisa Piccarreta and Blessed Padre Pio of Pietrelcina knew one another for some time without ever having met, for Luisa was always confined to the bed where she sat, while Padre Pio was enclosed in the friary of the Capuchin Fathers of San Giovanni Rotondo.5
One question naturally arises, how did they come to know one another?
This is difficult to discover, yet one thing is certain, that the two did know and esteem one another.
My aunt recounts how Luisa would speak with respect and veneration of the blessed father, describing him as a “true man of God“, who still had great suffering to face for the good of souls.
In about 1930, a well-known figure arrived at Luisa’s house, sent personally by Padre Pio. He was Federico Abresch, a convert of Padre Pio. Federico spoke at length with Luisa. What they said we are not given to know; but one thing is certain. Federico Abresch became an apostle of the Divine Will and regularly visited Luisa, with whom he always had long conversations.
When his little son received his first communion from Padre Pio’s hands, he was also immediately taken to see Luisa who, according to the story, foretold that he would become a priest.
The small boy of that time is now a priest and works at the Congregation for Bishops in Rome; he is known by the name of Mgr. Pio Abresch.
When Luisa was condemned by the Holy Office and her works put on the Index, Padre Pio sent her this message though Federico Abresch: “Dear Luisa, saints serve for the good of souls, but their suffering knows no bounds“. At that time Padre Pio was also in very great difficulties.
Blessed Padre Pio sent many people to Luisa Piccarreta and would say to the people of Corato who went to San Giovanni Rotondo: “What have you come here for? You have Luisa, go to her“.
Padre Pio recommended to certain of his faithful (including Federico Abresch) that they open a spirituality center at San Giovanni Rotondo, inspired by the Servant of God Luisa Piccarreta.
Miss Adriana Pallotti (a spiritual daughter of Padre Pio) is currently an heir to Padre Pio’s wishes. She has opened a House of the Divine Will at San Giovanni Rotondo, keeping alive the torch lit by Padre Pio with Federico Abresch. Miss Adriana Pallotti says that it was Blessed Padre Pio who encouraged her to spread Luisa Piccarreta’s spirituality in San Giovanni Rotondo and to help disseminate the Divine Will throughout the world, as Padre Pio desired.
Aunt Rosaria went regularly to San Giovanni Rotondo, especially after Luisa’s death. Padre Pio knew her very well, and when Luisa was still alive he would ask Aunt Rosaria when he saw her: “Rosa’, how is Luisa?“.
Aunt Rosaria would answer him: “She is well!“.
After Luisa’s death, Aunt Rosaria increased her visits to San Giovanni Rotondo, in order to receive enlightenment and advice from Padre Pio.
Aunt Rosaria was the one lamp that stayed alight to resolve Luisa Piccarreta’s case regarding the sentence of the Holy Office, visiting various ecclesiastical figures and, in addition, confronting the Congregation of the Holy Office. Once she managed – it is not known how – to enter the office of the Cardinal Prefect, Ottaviani, who heard her kindly and promised to take up the case.
Indeed, a few days later, Aunt Rosaria was summoned by Archbishop Addazi of Trani, who said to her: “Miss Rosaria, I do not know whether to reprimand you or to admire you for your courage. You have faced the guard dog of the Church, the great defender of the faith, without being bitten“.
The conclusion was that permission was obtained to move Luisa’s body from the cemetery to the Church of Santa Maria Greca.
Luisa said to my aunt: “You will be my witness” and one day Padre Pio told her point-blank in his Benevento dialect: “Rosa’, va nanz, va nanz ca Luisa iè gran e u munn sarà chin di Luisa” (Rosaria, go ahead, go ahead for Luisa is great and the world will be full of Luisa). My aunt often recounted this episode, but things were not going well: everything indicated that Luisa would soon be forgotten.
After the venerated Padre Pio’s death, my aunt said one day: “Padre Pio prophesied that Luisa would be known throughout the world“. And she repeated the phrase Padre Pio had said in his dialect.
I answered that there would be no easy solution to the case of Luisa Piccarreta Indeed nothing further was said of it in Corato either, and Padre Pio’s words could have been considered merely a comforting remark. But Aunt Rosaria retorted: “No! During my confession Padre Pio told me that Luisa is not a human factor, she is a work of God and he himself will make her emerge. The world will be astounded at her greatness; not many years will pass before this happens. The new millennium will see Luisa’s light“.
I was silent at this assertion and my aunt asked me: “But do you believe in Luisa?“.
I answered her that I did.
Then she said to me: “Come to my house in a few days’ time, because I have something very important to tell you“.
It was during the 70s and Padre Pio had been dead for a several years.
ADRIANA PALLOTTI FOUNDER OF THE “HOUSE OF PRAYER FOR THE KINGDOM OF THE DIVINE WILL”

ADRIANA PALLOTTI
Adriana Pallotti is a wonderful lady who lives in San Giovanni Rotondo (Foggia – Italy), where she founded the “House of Prayer for the Kingdom of the Divine Will”. She is originally from Modena (Northern Italy), but she moved to San Giovanni Rotondo many years ago, “..to live close to Padre Pio..”, as she says. Padre Pio, then, became her Confessor and Spiritual Director.
In San Giovanni Rotondo, she attended the Cenacles of Federico Abresch on the Divine Will, when Luisa was still alive.
During the 40’s, Federico Abresch became a close friend and disciple of Luisa. He used to visit her house and learn,
directly from her and from her manuscripts, of the Sublime Truths of Living in the Divine Will. He also exchanged
frequent correspondence with Luisa. Federico Abresch, a Franciscan Tertiary. Complying with wishes of Padre Pio of
Pietrelcina, he was the first apostle of the Divine Will in S. Giovanni Rotondo and did much to spread Luisa Piccarreta’s
In the following interview, made in 1994 on the occasion of the Fiftieth Anniversary of the Transit into Heaven of Luisa
Piccarreta, Miss Adriana Pallotti gives clear testimony on the fact that Padre Pio knew and loved Luisa and her Writings.
She also gives wonderful testimony on the conversion of Federico Abresch through Padre Pio, on the First “Divine Will”
Cenacle in the San Giovanni Rotondo, and on direct and specific comments of Padre Pio regarding the spreading of the
writings of Luisa.

Interview with Andriana Pallotti at San Giovanni Rotondo – Foggia – Italy
Legenda:
Interviewer = I Adriana Pallotti = AP
I – Well. Adriana, we are very happy to have you with us today, to witness to the world, which is getting to know Luisa.
We know that you are very important in this process, since you have been one of the first and most persevering persons to
spread this message, so important for the world. We would like to hear from you a little bit about your story. Let’s start
from the beginning, when you came here to San Giovanni Rotondo. How did you begin your growth under the guidance
of Padre Pio, and then, your first meetings with Federico Abresch?
AP – I came to live here, in San Giovanni Rotondo in 1945, when I heard from some friends that here there was a saint, so
great, so holy, and with the stigmata. I decided to leave the house of my father and all my things to come here, to live in
poverty close to Padre Pio. After a few years, I met Federico Abresch, who was a German man, converted by Padre Pio.
He had come to live in San Giovanni.
2
I – Wasn’t Federico a doctor, from Bologna?
AP – No. Federico was a photographer, who had established his laboratory in Bologna.
I – …And how did he arrive here?
AP – He was here because a friend of his invited him to come and visit this great saint. He didn’t know him, but he came
out of curiosity. As soon as his eyes met the eyes of Padre Pio, his heart was touched and he felt the desire to kneel at
Padre Pio’s feet. And Padre Pio told him: ‘What are you doing here after so many years without going to Confession?!’
He said: ‘Father, please help me!’
And Padre Pio: ‘Start from your last Confession!… No, I don’t mean this confession now… I mean from your last
Confession before you got married!’ So he started his new Confession and then, touched by the words of Padre Pio, he
was converted. After his conversion, he started to go around in search for spiritual things and beautiful souls. He heard
that there was a saint in Corato, bedridden for 70 years, so he went to visit this soul, who began to talk to him about
beautiful spiritual things on the Divine Will. He was very touched, and continued to visit Luisa with the permission of
Padre Pio. Luisa continued to talk to him about living in the Divine Will, and he wrote notes.
Sometimes, he saw her when she received the stigmata. One day, he was visiting Luisa and saw her bed shaking. He
asked: ‘What’s happening?’ And Luisa said: ‘I suffer, I suffer! – but gladly!’ She was suffering the Passion of Jesus.
Abresch went to her very often, also with his little son Pio, who was three years old. He asked: ‘So, what are we going to
do with this little boy… a Priest?’ And Luisa said: ‘Eh, eh, let’s pray.’ In fact, Pio became a priest and now he is in the
Vatican. Abresch always continued to go to her. He learned from her diaries, which she wrote at night. He would copy
them and then return them to Luisa. We learned this spirituality from him, since he always continued to keep these
I – So he started his first little cenacles…
AP – Yes, at night we used to go and listen to his talks about Luisa. We were enthusiastic! I couldn’t wait to go there,
every Saturday night. We were about 5 or 6. He spoke every week for one hour and a half, but we never wanted him to
stop, so much we loved this spirituality! It was about to give our human will to God, and to receive His Will in exchange,
so as to become divinized… In hearing this, we felt that we had found Paradise on earth! We were enthusiastic, and Padre
Pio was happy too.
Once I asked Padre Pio: ‘Father, is it good for me to listen, write and print the writings of Luisa Piccarreta? And he said:
‘Yes! Repeat it!’ So, I asked again: ‘Father, can I give some money to Andrea Magnifico to buy the equipment to print the
books of Luisa? And he again: ‘Yes!!!’ So I understood that it was really the Will of God to have the writings
printed…and we did it.
I – In which year did Federico start these conferences?
AP – Before I came, in 1945, he had already started with another group.
I – So, Luisa was still alive…
AP – ….yes, Luisa was still living.
I – …so, you started during the 50’s…
AP – …Yes, I started from the 50’s to talk about Luisa in my home to my guests. All were enthusiastic about this
spirituality of the Divine Will…
I – Who were some of the other souls?…You and who else?..
3
AP – There was a certain Giulietta Marchi from Bologna…She was very happy… Jesus spoke to this beautiful soul… She
died all of a sudden, after many years in which we were going together to Abresch. Before dying she told me: ‘Adriana,
you must get some tapes and record all that Abresch says, because in the future you will have to talk about this
spirituality…. The Lord wants this, because He wants to free us from the misery of the human will, in order for us to live
in a divine manner!…
I – Tell us about Andrea. When did you meet him?
AP – Andrea Magnifico from Milan came to my home to “change air.” I told him that we were going to listen to Abresch
who spoke about the spirituality of a certain Luisa from Corato, who lived in bed for many years…. and that the
spirituality that Jesus taught to Luisa was so sublime and so great that we felt that were living in Heaven,.. no longer on
earth! He said: ‘I want to come and listen’ And after he came he said: ‘Oh Finally! I had asked St. Joseph to let me know
if there was something, in the spiritual life, much greater than the things I knew…. And here it is! St. Joseph is now letting
me discover this great novelty….much greater than anything else
I – …So he started to make copies of the books…
AP – Yes, he started with photocopies, which we gave to many people… and we started to distribute them also to Priests
and others. Many souls followed them and were very happy about these spiritual lessons which Jesus had given to Luisa,
and which – through Luisa – we were able to know.
I – Are there other things that – as you remember – Padre Pio said about the DivineWill? Did you talk with Padre Pio
about Luisa?
AP – Yes, I asked him if it was a good thing to get a recorder in order to tape the writings of Luisa….and I went to Milan
to buy a recorder, because here I couldn’t find a good one… I asked him and he said: ‘Yes!!!’ After this other positive
answer…I went to Milan to get it.
I – …So he was aware of this…
AP – Yes, yes, yes, very much… Even more, among the young people who came to Abresch to listen to the lessons on the
Divine Will, one of them told us that he went to Confession to Padre Pio, asking him: ‘Father, is it true that the Blessed
Mother is Great not because She has been the Mother of God,.. for her virginity…her being Immaculate, but because – as
Luisa says in the writings – She never did Her human will, but only and exclusively the Will of God?’ Padre Pio
answered: ‘Yes, my son, this is the truth! This is the truth!’ And he continued: ‘Father, allow me to ask you one more
thing. Is it true that Jesus would have remained on the Cross even till the end of the world in order to save the humanity?…
And that His Cross is long as much as the centuries, and large as much as humanity?’ And Padre Pio: ‘Yes, my son, this is
the truth! This is the truth!’ And he said: ‘Father, please, can we hug each other?’ And they hugged.
I – Adriana, you have been reading about this spirituality, teaching it to many people, for years. What does this spirituality
of Luisa mean to you?
AP – It means that as we give to the Lord our own will, and we no longer use it, receiving His Will in exchange, we feel
such an interior peace that we are able to bear things that, humanly speaking, we were not able to suffer. But with His
Divine Will, the Lord gives us His Power, His Divine Power…His Creative Power.
I – He says that these writings will renew the face of the earth…
AP – …we will live on earth as the Blessed in Heaven…. It is the fulfillment of the Our Father!
I – …so, in you opinion, this is the future of the Church…
AP – Yes, in the writings of Luisa it is said that when the Church will possess them, there will be a fire within the
Church… It will be that same fire which the Gospel talks about: ‘They came to bring the fire on earth. Oh, how I wish that
it could be already burning…’ This is the fire of the Divine Will!!!
4
I – …and do you think that Luisa herself is important in this? I mean, is it possible for people to know the Divine Will
without knowing Luisa?
AP – The two things go together!
I – Is Luisa a saint?
AP – … remaining in bed for all those years, writing all these things…Of course!! We know from Abresch, who knew
Luisa personally, that Jesus Himself called her “My Divine Luisa… I exalted her up to the highest Seraphim”
I – Will she be Canonized, in your opinion?
AP – It might be that the Lord does not need this, since He is already glorified if we live this spirituality. If we do it, this is
His Glory! But it is up to us to live this spirituality…so that It may open its ways. In this way Luisa is “ipso facto” (by
fact) a Saint!
I – Well. Is there anything else you would like to tell us? What would be your advice to someone who has just heard about
the Divine Will for the first time?
AP – If these souls have sufferings, problems and many other things, they can say the Lord: ‘Lord, I can do nothing, but I
know that You can do everything. Take my will, and come to act in me,…to work, to walk, to breathe, to suffer in me…’
As we empty ourselves and let Him do, our lives become more simple,… and perfect. It will be easier to proceed along
the path of this life.
I – Are you happy to have known this spirituality?
AP – It has been the greatest grace I have received on this earth. Even greater than knowing Padre Pio, who has been a
great Confessor and Spiritual Director,… But with this spirituality we become divinized. We find this also in the Gospel,
but Jesus teaches this to Luisa with many examples, which make it easy and attractive. This is the greatest grace for us,
which allows us to bear and suffer things that we could not bear before; but with the suffering of Jesus within us,
everything becomes easy!
I – Very well Adriana. May God bless you always. Thank you.
AP – Thank you.
I – Adriana, do you know whether Padre Pio did ever read any of the writings of Luisa?
AP – One lady who went to Confession to Padre Pio told him that she had read the Hours of the Passion. Padre Pio said: ‘I
read it four times! Oh, how beautiful! And now, another one is about to come out – about the Blessed Virgin in the
Kingdom. Oh, how beautiful that one too!’ So, Padre Pio was aware of everything that came from Luisa’s hands.
I – Is it possible that he was reading the Hour of the Passion when he received the stigmata?
AP – It is possible. It is said that they found a “pool of his tears” on the floor of the Chapel, when he meditated on the
I – Adriana, do you know whether any vocations matured from the conferences of Federico Abresch?
P – Yes, many vocations! For example there was a young lady, who left her boyfriend to become a cloistered nun. When
Padre Pio told her that those things were the truth, she said: ‘So, what am I doing here in the world? I want to be in a
Convent and lead a cloistered life.’ So she went and died in the Convent. Also, other young people, when they heard
Abresch talking about this spirituality – which is living on earth as the Saints and the Blessed live in Heaven – decided to
become priests or monks…. Yes, listening to Abresch… saying that, as we exchange our miserable human will, which is
only capable of evil, with the Divine Will, we start living in a divine way, and our acts become like shining suns…like
stars…divine things! So they said: ‘What are doing in the world? We’d rather spend our lives thinking about these
things!!’

Our Lady of La Salette
Mélanie and Maximin, the two children privileged to see Mary in 1846, came from the town of Corps near Grenoble, in a poor part of south-eastern France. Maximin Giraud was eleven years old at the time and Mélanie Calvat fourteen. On Saturday 19 September, they were looking after their employer’s cattle, high up on the pasture above La Salette, a village near Corps, when they saw a wonderful apparition of Mary.
A globe of light opened to reveal a resplendent woman seated on a stone with her head in her hands. The children later described her as very tall and beautiful, wearing a long, white, pearl studded, sleeved dress, and a white shawl, with some sort of tiara or crown on her head. Hanging from her neck was a large crucifix adorned with a small hammer and pincers, with a brilliantly shining figure of Christ on it. The whole effect was as if she was made of light.
Speaking tearfully she told them that unless people repented she would be forced to let go the arm of her son because it had become so heavy. Mary went on to complain that she had to pray ceaselessly to her son for them, but the people still worked on Sundays and blasphemed. She also spoke of coming punishments for these sins, including crop blights and famine. She confided a secret to each of the children, which they were not to divulge, although eventually these secrets were made known to Pope Pius IX.
Finally she asked the children to spread her message before disappearing. When the children returned home they told their story, an account of which was taken down in writing the next day. They faced much opposition in making known Mary’s message, but they maintained their story with resolution. The local Bishop too faced quite a degree of opposition in investigating the apparition, and it was only after four years, and having set up two commissions of enquiry, that Mgr de Bruillard, as bishop of Grenoble, approved of devotion to Our Lady of Salette, in the following terms.
“We declare that the apparition of the Blessed Virgin to two shepherds, on September 19, 1846, on a mountain in the Alps in the parish of La Salette, bears in itself all the marks of truth and that the faithful are justified in believing without question in its truth. And so, to mark our lively gratitude to God and the glorious Virgin Mary, we authorise the cult of Our Lady of La Salette.”

An Introduction to the Servant of God Luisa Piccarreta
The Little Daughter of the Divine Will”
1897 – 1898
Saint Annibale and Melanie Calvat with Daughters of Divine Zeal
In the beginning, Saint Annibale entrusted the girls’ orphanage to a distinguished widow who had been converted to a life of piety through one of his sermons: Laura Jensen Bucca was a genuine help to him for several years, but then she resigned. The priest turned to various religious communities, only in vain. So he decided to found his own congregation of nuns whom he called Daughters of Divine Zeal, patterned after the inspiration of the Rogate – the expression of the zeal burning in the Sacred Heart of Jesus for the glory of the Father and the salvation of souls.
The budding community was not without its headaches: tribulation goes hand in hand with all the works of God. Not only that, it is the bright badge of divine favor. In the light of a schism which occurred, the Institute was suppressed by Church authority. Thanks to the offices of a venerable Friar Minor, Fr. Bernard of Portosalvo, a one-year stay on the decree was given to the Fr. Annibale. The Institute was put on trial. During that year, he had as a cooperator for his work none other than Melanie Calvat, the famous young shepherdess to whom the Mother of God appeared on the mountain of La-Salette. Melanie remained at the Institute for one year, from September 1897 to September 1898 – a year which, in the words of Saint Annibale, was a year of blessing. The trial period was weathered successfully, having a healthy and vigorous effect on the community, and the women’s congregation was put on a safe footing.
Melanie died at the age of 72, alone and unattended, on December 14, 1904, at Altamura, near Bari, Italy. She is buried beneath a marble column with a bas-relief depiction of Our Lady welcoming her into heaven. In spite of her unapproved writings, Melanie was always faithful to her original account of the apparition and message of La Salette. She demonstrated this at the Shrine of La Salette during her last visit there September 8-19,1902

Feast of the Seven Sorrows of Mary
In the Kingdom of the Divine Will

From the Writings of
The Servant of God Luisa Piccarreta
The Little Daughter of the Divine Will
Feast of the Seven Dolors (Sorrows) of
the Blessed Virgin Mary
The seven dolors of the Blessed Virgin are the chief sorrowful events in the life of Our Blessed Lady. They are:
-
The circumcision of our Lord — when she saw his blood shed for the first time;
-
Her flight into Egypt — to save the life of the Infant Jesus, when Herod sought to kill Him;
-
The three days she lost her Son in Jerusalem;
-
When she saw him carrying the cross;
-
When she saw him die;
-
When His dead body was taken down from the cross;
-
When it was laid in the sepulchre or tomb.
First Sorrow – The circumcision of our Lord
Meditation 2 – The Queen of Heaven in the Kingdom of the Divine Will
Now, you must know that only eight days had passed from the birth of the Divine Infant. Everything was feast and happiness; the very Creation, taking a festive attitude, celebrated Its Baby Creator. But duty interrupted our joys, because in those times there was a law that all firstborn sons were to undergo the cruel cut of circumcision. My Heart of Mother bled with sorrow in having to submit my dear Son, my Life, my own Creator, to such a bitter pain. Oh, how I would have wanted to take His place! But the Supreme Volition imposed Itself on my love, and giving Me heroism, commanded Me to circumcise the Baby God. My child, you cannot comprehend how much it cost Me; but the Divine Fiat won, and I obeyed, united with Saint Joseph. In mutual agreement, we had my dear Son circumcised. At the painful cut, I felt my Heart being torn, and I cried. Saint Joseph cried too, and my dear Baby sobbed, and His pain was such that He shivered, and looking at me, He sought help. What an hour of pain and spasm for the three of us! It was such that, more than a sea, it engulfed all creatures, to bring them the first pledge and the very Life of my Son, to place them in safety. Now, blessed child, you must know that this cut enclosed profound mysteries: first, it was the seal that impressed in the little Humanity of the Celestial Baby His brotherhood with the whole human family; and the blood He shed was the first disbursement before Divine Justice in order to ransom all human generations. The dear Baby was innocent – He was not obliged by the law; but He wanted to submit Himself, first, to give the example; and then, to infuse trust and courage, saying to all: “Do not fear; I am your little brother, similar to you. Let us love one another, and I will place you all in safety. I will bring you all to my Celestial Father, as my dear brothers.” My child, what an example the Celestial Baby gives! He, Who is the Author of the law, obeys the law. He is born only eight days ago, yet He makes it a duty for Himself, submitting Himself to the cruel cut of circumcision; an indelible cut – as indelible as the union He came to form with degraded humanity. This says that sanctity is in doing one’s own duty, in the observance of the laws, and in fulfilling the Divine Will. Sanctity without duty does not exist. It is duty that places order, harmony, and the seal on sanctity.
Second Sorrow – Her flight into Egypt
Day Twenty-four – The Queen of Heaven in the Kingdom of the Divine Will.
My dearest child, today the Heart of your Mama is swollen with love and with sorrow, so much so, that I cannot refrain from crying. You know of the coming of the Magi Kings, who caused rumor in Jerusalem, asking about the new King. And cruel Herod, for fear of being removed from his throne, has already given the mandate to kill my sweet Jesus, my dear life, together with all the other children. My child, what pain! The One who has come to give life to all, and to bring into the world the new era of peace, of happiness, of grace…they want to kill Him! What ingratitude! What perfidy! Ah, my child, to what extent the blindness of the human will reaches! To the extent of becoming ferocious, of tying the hands of the Creator Himself, and of making itself the owner of the One who created it. Give Me your compassion, my child, and try to calm the crying of the sweet Baby. He cries because of human ingratitude, because, only a newborn, they want Him dead; and in order to save Him, we are forced to flee. Dear Saint Joseph has already been advised by the Angel to leave for a foreign land. Accompany us, dear child; do not leave us alone, and I will continue to give you my lessons on the great evils of the human will. Now, you must know that as man withdrew from the Divine Will, he broke off with his Creator. Everything on earth had been made by God for him – everything was his; but man, by not wanting to do the Divine Will, lost all rights, and one could say that he did not know where to place his foot. So He became a poor exiled one, a pilgrim who could not have a permanent residence; and this, not only for the soul, but also for the body. All things became mutable for poor man; and if he did possess any fleeting thing, it was by virtue of the foreseen merits of this Celestial Baby. This, because the whole magnificence of Creation was destined by God for all those who would do His Will and live in Its Kingdom. All others, if they manage to take anything, are the true petty thieves of their Creator; and with reason: they do not want to do the Divine Will, but they want the goods which belong to It? Now, dear child, listen to how much this dear Baby and I love you: at the first dawn of His life, He goes into exile, and into a foreign land, in order to free you from the exile in which your human will placed you; to call you to live, not in a foreign land, but in your fatherland – the Kingdom of the Supreme Fiat – which was given to you when you were created. Child of my Heart, have pity on the tears of your Mother, and on the tears of this sweet dear Baby – crying, We ask you never to do your will. But We beg you, We implore you: come back into the bosom of the Divine Will, which so much longs for you! Now, dear child, in the midst of the sorrow for human ingratitude, and in the midst of the immense joys and happinesses that the Divine Fiat gave us and the feast that all Creation made for the sweet Baby, the earth became green and flowery again under our steps, to give homage to its Creator. The sun fixed on Him, and praising Him with its light, it felt honored to give Him its light and heat. The wind caressed Him; the birds, almost like clouds, alighted around us, and with their trills and songs, made the most beautiful lullabies for the dear Baby, to calm His crying and favor His sleep. My child, since the Divine Will was in us, we had power over everything. So we arrived in Egypt, and after a long period of time, the Angel of the Lord told Saint Joseph that we should return to the house of Nazareth, because the cruel tyrant had died. So we repatriated to our homeland.
Now, Egypt symbolizes the human will – a land full of idols; and wherever Baby Jesus passed, He would knock down these idols and cast them into hell. How many idols does the human will possess! Idols of vainglory, of self-esteem and of passion, which tyrannize the poor creature! Therefore, be attentive; listen to your Mama. I would make any sacrifice never to let you do your will; and I would also lay down my life, to give you the great good of living always in the bosom of the Divine Will.
Third Sorrow – The three days she lost her Son in Jerusalem
Meditation 5 – The Queen of Heaven in the Kingdom of the Divine Will.
We continued to spend our lives in the quiet little house of Nazareth, and my dear Son grew in grace and in wisdom. He was charming because of the sweetness and the gentleness of His voice, the sweet enchantment of His eyes, and the loveliness of His whole person. Yes, my Son was truly beautiful, unsurpassingly beautiful! He had recently reached the age of twelve, when we went to Jerusalem according to custom, in order to solemnize the Passover. We set out on the journey – He, Saint Joseph and I. Very often, as we proceeded, with devotion and recollected, my Jesus would break the silence and speak to us now of His celestial Father, now of the immense love for souls which He felt in His Heart. Once in Jerusalem, we went directly to the temple, and as we arrived, we prostrated ourselves with our faces to the ground, adoring God profoundly, and praying for a long time. Our prayer was so fervent and recollected as to open the heavens, draw and bind the Celestial Father, and therefore hasten the reconciliation between Him and men. … After we had fulfilled our duty in the temple and celebrated the Passover, we prepared to return to Nazareth. In the confusion of the crowd, we were separated; I remained with the women, and Joseph joined the men. I looked around to see whether my Jesus had come with Me, but, not seeing Him, I thought He had remained with his father Joseph. But what was not the surprise and the concern I felt when, as we arrived at the place at which we were to reunite, I did not see Him at his side! Unaware of what had happened, we felt such fright and such pain that we both remained mute. Overcome with sorrow, we went back hurriedly, anxiously asking those whom we met: “O tell us if you have seen Jesus, our Son, for we can not live without Him!” Crying, we would describe His features: “He is all lovable; His beautiful azure eyes sparkle with light and speak to the heart; His gaze strikes, enraptures and binds; His forehead is majestic; His face is beautiful, of an enchanting beauty; His most sweet voice descends deep into the heart and sweetens all bitternesses; His hair, curly and like finest gold, renders Him striking and charming. All is majesty, dignity and sanctity in Him. He is the most beautiful among the sons of men!” But in spite of our searching, nobody was able to tell us anything. The sorrow I felt was so cruel as to make Me weep bitterly, opening, every instant, deep gashes in my soul, which caused Me true spasms of death. Dear child, if Jesus was my Son, He was also my God; therefore my sorrow was wholly within the divine order – that is, so powerful and immense as to surpass all other possible torments together. If the Fiat which I possessed had not sustained Me continuously with Its divine strength, I would have died of shock. Seeing that no one was able to give us information, I anxiously questioned the Angels who surrounded Me: “But, tell Me, where is my beloved Jesus? Where should I direct my steps in order to find Him? O, tell Him I can bear no more; bring Him into my arms on your wings! My Angels, have pity on my tears, help Me – bring Me Jesus!” In the meantime, as every search had turned out in vain, we returned to Jerusalem. After three days of most bitter sighs, tears, anxieties and fears, we entered the temple. I was all eyes and looked everywhere, when, finally, overcome with jubilation, I saw my Son in the midst of the doctors of the law! He was speaking with such wisdom and majesty as to make those who were listening remain enraptured and amazed. Just in seeing Him, I felt life come back to Me, and immediately I understood the secret reason of His being lost. And now, a little word to you, dearest child. In this mystery, my Son wanted to give to Me and to you, a sublime teaching. Could you perhaps assume that He was ignoring what I was suffering? On the contrary, my tears, my searching, and my cruel and intense sorrow, resounded in His heart. Yet, during those hours, so painful, He sacrificed to the Divine Will, His own Mama, the one whom He loves so much, in order to show Me how I too, one day, was to sacrifice His very Life to the Supreme Will.
Fourth Sorrow – When she saw him carrying the cross
Hours of the Passion – The Eighteenth Hour
My Life, Jesus, making You suffer unheard-of spasms, your enemies have managed to put You on your feet, and as You walk, staggering, I hear your panting breath. Your Heart beats more strongly and new pains pierce It intensely. You shake your head in order to clear your eyes from the blood that fills them, and You gaze anxiously. Ah, my Jesus, I understood everything – your Mama, who is searching for You like a moaning dove, wants to tell You one last word, and receive your last gaze; and You feel Her pains, Her heart lacerated in Yours, moved and wounded by Her love and by Yours. You see Her pushing Her way through the crowd, wanting at any cost to see You, to hug You, to give You the last good-bye. But You are more transfixed in seeing Her mortal paleness, and all of your pains reproduced in Her by force of Love. If She lives, it is only by a miracle of your Omnipotence. You move your steps toward hers, but you can hardly exchange a glance! Oh, pang of your two Hearts! The soldiers notice it, and with blows and shoving prevent Mama and Son from exchanging the last good-bye. The torment of both is such that your Mama remains petrified by the pain, and is about to die. Faithful John and the pious women sustain Her, while You fall again under the Cross. Then, your sorrowful Mama does with Her soul that which She cannot do with Her Body, because She is prevented: She enters into You, makes the Will of the Eternal One Her own, and associating Herself in all your pains, performs the office of your Mother, kisses You, repairs You, soothes You, and pours the balm of Her sorrowful love into all your wounds! My suffering Jesus, I too unite with the pierced Mama. I make all your pains, and every drop of your Blood my own; in each wound I want to act as a mama for You, and together with Her, and with You, I repair for all the dangerous encounters, and for those who expose themselves to occasions of sin, or, forced by necessity to be exposed, remain entangled in sin.
Fifth Sorrow – When she saw him die
Hours of the Passion – Twenty-second Hour
My dying Crucified, Jesus, You are now about to give the last breaths of your mortal life; your Most Holy Humanity is already stiffened; your Heart seems to beat no longer. With Magdalene I cling to your feet and, if it were possible, I would like to give my life to revive Yours. Meanwhile, O Jesus, I see that You open your dying eyes again, and You look around from the Cross, as though wanting to give the last good-bye to all. You look at your dying Mama, who no longer has motion or voice, so many are the pains She feels; and You say: “Good-bye Mama, I am leaving, but I will keep You in my Heart. You, take care of my children and yours.” You look at crying Magdalene, faithful John and your very enemies, and with your gazes You say to them: “I forgive you; I give you the kiss of peace.” Nothing escapes your gaze; You take leave of everyone and forgive everyone. Then, You gather all your strengths, and with a loud and thundering voice, You cry out: “Father, into your hands I commend my spirit”. And bowing your head, You breathe your last. My Jesus, at this cry all nature is shaken and cries over your death – the death of its Creator! The earth trembles strongly; and with its trembling, it seems to be crying and wanting to shake up souls to recognize You as true God. The veil of the Temple is torn, the dead are risen; the sun, which until now had cried over your pains, has withdrawn its light with horror. At this cry, your enemies fall on their knees, and beating their breasts, they say: “Truly He is the Son of God.” And your Mother, petrified and dying, suffers pains harder than death. My dead Jesus, with this cry You also place all of us into the hands of the Father, because You do not reject us. Therefore You cry out loudly, not only with your voice, but with all your pains and with the voices of your Blood: “Father, into your hands I commend my spirit and all souls.” My Jesus, I too abandon myself in You; give me the grace to die completely in your love – in your Will, and I pray that You never permit me, either in life or in death, to go out of your Most Holy Will. Meanwhile I intend to repair for all those who do not abandon themselves perfectly to your Most Holy Will, therefore losing or maiming the precious gift of your Redemption. What is not the sorrow of your Heart, O my Jesus, in seeing so many creatures escaping from your arms and abandoning themselves to themselves? Have pity on all, O my Jesus – have pity on me.
Sixth Sorrow – When His dead body was taken down from the cross
Hours of the Passion – Twenty-third Hour
My dead Jesus, I see that your disciples hasten to depose You from the Cross. Joseph and Nicodemus, who have remained hidden until now, with courage and without fearing anything, now want to give You an honorable burial. So they take hammers and pincers, to perform the sacred and sad unnailing from the Cross, while your pierced Mama stretches out Her maternal arms to receive You on Her lap. My Jesus, while they unnail You, I too want to help your disciples to sustain your Most Holy Body; and with the nails they remove from You, nail me completely to Yourself. With your Holy Mother, I want to adore You and kiss You, and then enclose myself in your Heart, never to leave again.
Seventh Sorrow – When it was laid in the sepulchre or tomb.
Hours of the Passion – Twenty-fourth Hour
Tormented Mama, I see You hasten, because those who surround You want to close the sepulcher. Almost flying, You take the Hands of Jesus between yours, You kiss them, You press them to your Heart; and placing your hands in His, You take for Yourself the pains and the piercings of those Most Holy Hands. Then You fly over the Feet of Jesus, looking at the cruel torture which the nails have made in them; and as You place your feet in them, You take for Yourself those wounds, and You offer Yourself to run toward sinners in the place of Jesus, in order to snatch them from hell. Anguishing Mama, I see You give the last good-bye to the pierced Heart of Jesus. Here You pause. It is the last assault to your Maternal Heart; You feel It being torn from your breast because of the vehemence of love and pain and, alone, It runs to place Itself in the Most Holy Heart of Jesus. And You, in seeing Yourself without a heart, hasten to take His Most Holy Heart into yours – His Love rejected by many creatures, His many ardent desires not fulfilled because of their ingratitudes, and the pains and piercings of that Most Holy Heart, which will keep You crucified for the rest of your life. In looking at the wide wound, You kiss it, You lap up the Blood; and feeling the Life of Jesus in Yourself, You have the strength to fulfill the bitter separation. Then You embrace Him, and You allow the sepulchral stone to close on Him.
