VOLUME 17

The mission of living in the Divine Will: the mission of Our Lord Jesus Christ, the mission of Mary Most Holy, and the mission of Luisa.

I was thinking about the many things that my beloved Jesus told me on His Most Holy Will, and some doubts came back to me – that, who knows, it might really not be necessary to say everything, or, that some things were not necessary. But Jesus, wanting to lovingly resolve my doubts and make me know the mission He entrusts to the one who is to make His Divine Will known – having chosen for this the misery that I am, to my great stupefaction and confusion – continuing His holy instructions on this matter, told me: “My daughter!Luisa), every mission is to be connected to the office of executing it, and therefore it must be carried out omitting nothing of that which belongs to it. In fact, every mission which is destined for the good of others, has its own particular gifts, graces, riches and qualities, which are useful for its execution.

My Humanity received from my Divinity the mission of the salvation of souls and the office of Redeemer – that is, to redeem them from the slavery of sin and from eternal death. In order to carry out this office, I was given their souls, their pains, their satisfactions. Therefore, I enclosed within Myself everything from everyone; and if my Humanity had neglected to enclose in Itself just one soul, one satisfaction, the office of Redeemer would not have been complete – I would not have enclosed in Myself all the graces, the goods and the light which it was necessary to give to each soul. And even though not all of the souls are saved, this says nothing. On my part, I had to enclose the goods of all, so that I might have necessary and superabundant graces for all, in order to be able to save all. This was convenient to Me for the decorum and the just honor of my office as Redeemer.

Look at the sun above your horizon: it contains so much light as to be able to give light to all; and even though not all might want to enjoy its light, by its unique office as sun, it possesses even the light that creatures might refuse. This was convenient to the Sun, because it was created by God as the unique sphere which was to warm and embrace the earth with its light. Each created being has its own office to carry out, and that office is unique – linked to that being, to that creature. In order to execute it well, it is necessary that the one who is to carry out the office entrusted to her, contain so much of that good – good which she must give to others according to the mission for which she was created – that as much of it as she gives, it is never exhausted, not even by one atom.

This was even more convenient to Me, Who was to be the new Sun of the souls, and Who was to give light to all and embrace all with my light, to bring them all to the Supreme Majesty, offering to this Divine Majesty an act from Myself which would contain all acts, and to make the superabundant light of my Divinity descend upon all in order to rescue them.

In addition to Me, there is my Celestial Mama, who received the unique mission as the Mother of a God Son, and the office of Co-Redemptrix of mankind. For her mission of Divine Maternity, She was enriched with so much grace, that all other creatures combined, both celestial and terrestrial, would never be able to equal Her. But this was not enough to draw the Word into her maternal womb; it was necessary that the Mother put in action all this abyss of graces and gifts, by embracing all creatures, loving them, repairing and adoring the Supreme Majesty for all; in such a way as to accomplish Herself, all that the human generations owed to God. Therefore, in her virginal Heart She had an inexhaustible vein for God and for all creatures. When the Divinity found in this Virgin compensation for the love of all, It felt enraptured, and formed in Her Its Conception – that is, the Incarnation of the Word. And as She conceived Me, She took on the office of Co- Redemptrix, and shared and embraced together with Me, all the pains, the substitutions, the reparations, the maternal love, for all. In the Heart of my Mother there was a fiber of maternal love for each creature. This is why, in truth and with justice, when I was on the Cross, I declared Her Mother of all. She ran together with Me in the love, in the sufferings – in everything; She never left Me alone. If the Eternal One had not placed so much grace in Her as to be able to receive, alone, the love of all – He would never have moved from Heaven to come down upon earth and redeem mankind. Here is the necessity, the convenience – that She had to embrace and surpass everything, as befitting the mission of the Mother of the Word.

When an office is unique, as a consequence, nothing must escape the one who has it as mission. He must have everything under his eyes, so as to be able to offer the good he possesses; he must be like a true sun that can give light to all. So were I, and my Celestial Mama.

Now, your mission of making known the Eternal Will is braided with mine and with that of my dear Mother. And since it has to serve for the good of all, it was necessary to centralize the Eternal Sun of my Will into one creature; so that, as a unique mission, this Sun might let its rays blaze from her, and all might take the good of Its Light. This implies that, for the decorum and honor of my Will, I had to pour into you(Luisa), as bearers and preparations, such graces, light, love and knowledge of It, as to befit the residence of the Sun of my Will. Even more, you(Luisa) must know that, just as my Humanity, in Its office of Redeemer, conceived all souls, the same was to happen in you(Luisa), in your mission and office to make my Will known and reign: as you(Luisa) continue to do your acts in my Will for all, all creatures remain conceived in your will; and as you(Luisa) keep repeating your acts in Mine, you(Luisa) form many sips of Life of Divine Will, in order to be able to nourish all the creatures which are as though conceived in yours, by virtue of my Will. Do you(Luisa) not feel how, in my Will, you embrace all, from the first to the last creature which is to exist upon earth; and for all, you(Luisa) would want to satisfy, love, please this Supreme Will, binding It to all, removing all obstacles that prevent Its dominion in the creatures – making It known to all; and even with sufferings, you(Luisa) expose yourself to satisfy for all, this Supreme Will, which so much loves to be known and to reign in the midst of creatures?

To you(Luisa), Firstborn Daughter of my Divine Will(Luisa), it is given to make known the qualities, the value, the good It contains, and Its eternal sorrow of living unknown – hidden, in the midst of the human generations; even more, despised and offended by the evil ones, and placed by the good ones at the level of the other virtues, as if It were a little light which is lit by men – as virtues are in comparison with my Will – and not the Eternal Sun that my Will is.

The mission of my Will is the greatest that can exist: there is no good which does not descend from It; there is no glory which does not come from It. Everything is centered in It: Our interior Works and those which We have delivered; the Creation of the angels, of the world, of men; all virtues, all merits, all predestinations, all goods, all the glory of the chosen ones, all the mysteries of the infinite love, which are still unknown to man; and the past, the present, the future – all in one Act and in act, and in one single point.

Therefore, be attentive, and do not want to waste time with doubts or uncertainties. Everything I told you(Luisa) for this mission was necessary – not for you, but for the honor, the glory, the knowledge and the sanctity of my Will and of Its dominion in the creatures. And since my Will is one, one was to be the creature to whom I had to entrust It, and through whom It would make Its rays blaze, to do good to all.”

VOLUME 17
May 4, 1925
(Continuation of the previous chapter). The mission of the Divine Will reproduces on earth the image of the Most Holy Trinity.

After writing what is written above, I began to do the adoration to my Crucified Jesus, fusing all of myself in His Most Holy Will; and my beloved Jesus came out from within my interior, and placing His Most Holy Will close to mine, all tenderness, told me: “My daughter(Luisa), did you(Luisa) write everything on the mission of my Will?”

And I: ‘Yes, yes, I wrote everything.’

And He, again: “What if I told you(Luisa) that you(Luisa) did not write everything? Rather, you(Luisa) have left out the most essential thing. So, continue to write, and add: ‘The mission of my Will will conceal the Most Holy Trinity upon earth. Just as in Heaven there are the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, inseparable but distinct among themselves, Who form all the beatitude of Heaven, in the same way, on earth there will be three persons who, because of their missions, will be distinct and inseparable among themselves: the Virgin, with Her Maternity which conceals the Paternity of the Celestial Father and encloses His power in order to fulfill Her mission of Mother of the Eternal Word and Co-Redemptrix of mankind; my Humanity, for the mission of Redeemer, which was enclosed in the Divinity of the Word, without ever separating from the Father and from the Holy Spirit, in order to manifest my celestial wisdom, adding the bond of becoming inseparable from my Mama; and you(Luisa), for the mission of my Will, as the Holy Spirit will display His Love in you, manifesting to you His secrets, the prodigies of my Will, the goods It contains, in order to make happy those who will give themselves to knowing how much good this Supreme Will contains, to love It and to let It reign in their midst, offering their souls to let It dwell within their hearts, that It may be able to form Its Life in them. And the bond of inseparability will be added, between you, the Mother and the Eternal Word.

These three missions are distinct and inseparable. The first two have prepared the graces, the light, the work, and everything, with unheard-of pains, for the third mission of my Will, in order to be all fused in It without leaving their office, so as to find rest, because my Will alone is celestial rest. These two missions will be repeated, because their exuberance of grace, of light, of knowledge, is so great that all human generations can be filled with them; even more, they will not be able to contain all the good which they contain. These two missions are symbolized by the Sun, since, in creating it, I filled it with so much light and heat, that all human generations can enjoy it in superabundance. Nor did I take into account that, since in the beginning of creation there were only Adam and Eve on earth, I could have placed in the Sun enough light as to be sufficient only for the two of them, making it then grow, in proportion to the growth of the human generations. No, no – I made the Sun full of light, just as it is now, and will be. For the decorum and the honor of Our Power, Wisdom and Love, Our works are always made with the fullness of all the good which they contain; nor are they subject to increase or decrease.

So I did with the Sun: I centralized in it all the light which it was to serve, up to the last man. But how much good does the Sun not do to the earth? What glory does it not give to its Creator, with its mute light? I can say that, for the immense good it does to the earth, with its mute language, the Sun glorifies Me and makes Me known more than all other things together; and this, because it is full in its light, and stable in its course. When I looked at the Sun which, with so much light, only Adam and Eve could enjoy, I also looked at all the living; and in seeing that that light was to serve all, my paternal goodness exulted with joy, and I remained glorified in my works.

So I did with my dear Mama: I filled Her with so much grace, that She can give graces to all without ever exhausting even one of them. So I did with my Humanity: there is no good which It does not possess – and the very Divinity, to be able to give It to whomever wants It. So I did with you: I enclosed in you my Will, and with It I enclosed Myself. I enclosed in you Its knowledges, Its secrets, Its light. I filled your soul up to the brim; so much so, that what you write is nothing other than the outpouring of what you contain of my Will. And even though it now serves you alone, and a few glimmers of light serve some other souls, I am content, because being light, it will make its way by itself, more than a second Sun, in order to illuminate the human generations and to bring about the fulfillment of Our works: that Our Will be known and loved, and that It reign as Life within the creatures. This was the purpose of Creation – this was its beginning, this will be its means, and end.

Therefore, be attentive, because this is about rescuing that Eternal Will which, with so much love, wants to dwell in the creatures. But It wants to be known, It does not want to be like a stranger; rather, It wants to give out Its goods and become life of each one, but It wants Its rights whole – Its place of honor. It wants the human will to be banished – the only enemy for It, and for man.

The mission of my Will was the purpose of the creation of man. My Divinity did not depart from Heaven, from Its throne; my Will, instead, not only departed, but descended into all created things and formed Its Life in them. However, while all things recognized Me, and I dwell in them with majesty and decorum, man alone drove Me away. But I want to conquer him and win him; and this is why my mission is not finished. So I called you, entrusting to you my own mission, that you may place the one who drove Me away on the lap of my Will, and everything may return to Me, in my Will.

Therefore, do not be surprised at the great and marvelous things I may tell you for the sake of this mission, or at the many graces I may give you; because this is not about making a saint, but about saving the generations. This is about rescuing a Divine Will, for which everything must return to the beginning, to the origin from which everything came, so that the purpose of my Will may have its complete fulfillment.’”

QUEEN MAMA, BEARER OF JESUS, THE GREAT GIFT THAT WAS CONSIGNED TO HER

The Queen, Bearer of Jesus, the Great Gift that was
consigned to Her. Task that She had from the Supreme Being.

5/28/37 – Vol. 34

Living in the Divine Volition continues, so much is His Love, that He hides
me in Its Light so that nothing but His Most Holy Will is seen, felt, touched.
Rather, this morning My Celestial Mother made me a sweet and dear surprise.
Having received Holy Communion, She made seen in my interior that She was
as harmonized with Baby Jesus. She held Him so clasped to Her Maternal Heart,
covered with Her arms, that in order to see Him and delight Him with my little
love, I had to abandon myself in Her arms in order that I too was harmonized with
Them so that I could Love as Jesus and the Queen Mama Loved. O! how content
They were that I wanted to Live together with Them.
Now, while I was clasped with Them, the Sovereign Queen, all Goodness and
Tenderness, told me: “My beloved daughter, you must know that I am the Bearer
of Jesus. This was a Gift that the Supreme Being entrusted to Me. And when
He was certain that I had Grace, Love, Power, and the Divine Will Itself, in order
to keep Him guarded, defended, and Loved, then He consigned the Gift to Me,
that is, the Eternal Word, who Incarnated Himself in My Womb, telling Me: ‘Our
daughter, We make You the Great Gift of the Life of the Son-God, such that You
are Mistress of Him. And You, give Him to whomever You want. However, know
Him, keep Him defended, never leave Him alone with whomever You give Him to,
in order to fill in if they do not love Him, in order to make reparation to Him if they
offend Him. You will act in a way that nothing is lacking to the Decency, to the
Sanctity, to the Purity that befits Him. Be attentive, He is the Greatest Gift that
We make You. And We give You the Power of Bilocating Him however many times
You want, so that one who wants Him can receive this Great Gift and posses Him.’
“Now, this Son is Mine, He is My Gift. And as Mine I know His Loving Secrets,
His anxieties, His yearnings, but so much so, that He arrives at crying, and with
repeated sobs He tells Me: ‘My Mama, give Me souls, I want souls.’ I want what
He wants. I can say that I yearn and cry together, because I want that everyone
possess My Son. But I must place His Life, the Great Gift that God entrusted to
Me, in safety. This is why if He descends into hearts Sacramentally, I descend
together in order to guarantee My Gift; I can not leave Him alone. My poor Son,
if He did not have His Mama who descends together, how badly they treat Him for
Me. Some do not tell Him one ‘I love You’ from the heart, and I must Love Him.
Some receive Him distracted, without thinking about the Great Gift that they
receive, and I pour Myself over Him in order to not let Him feel their distractions
and coldnesses. Some arrive at making Him cry for Me, and I must quiet His
rears, and make sweet reproaches to the creature, so that they would not make
Him cry for Me. How many moving scenes occur in the hearts who receive Him
Sacramentally. There are souls who never content themselves with loving Him
enough, and I give them My Love, and also His, in order to make them Love.
These are scenes of Heaven, and the Angels themselves remain enraptured by it,
and We feel Ourselves reinvigorated from the sufferings that the other creatures
have given Us.“But who can tell you everything? I am the Bearer of Jesus, nor does
He want to go anywhere without Me, so much so that when the priest is about
to pronounce the words of the Consecration over the Holy Host, I make wings
with My Maternal Hands so that He descends by means of My hands in order
to consecrate Himself, such that if unworthy hands touch Him, I make Him feel
Mine that defend Him and cover Him with My Love. But this is not enough, I am
always on the lookout to see if they want My Son, so much so, that if some sinner

repents of his grave sins, and the Light of Grace dawns in his heart, I immediately
bring Jesus to him as Confirmation of the pardon, and I think of everything that is
needed in order to make Him remain in that converted heart. I am the Bearer of
Jesus, and I am that because I possess in Myself the Kingdom of His Divine Will;
It reveals to Me who wants Him, and I run, I fly, in order to bring Him—however
without ever leaving Him.
“And not only am I Bearer, but Spectator and Listener of what He does and
says to souls. Do you believe that I was not present to listen to the so many
Lessons that My dear Son made you on His Divine Will? I was present, I listened
Word by Word to what He told you, and in every Word I thanked My Son and I felt
doubly glorified because He spoke about the Kingdom that I already possessed,
that has been all My Fortune, and the cause of the Great Gift of My Son. And in
seeing Him speak I saw the fortune of My children grafted with Mine. O! how I
rejoiced. All the Lessons that He has given you, and also more, are already written
in My Heart, and in seeing them repeated to you, I enjoy one more Paradise in
every Lesson. And however many times you were not attentive and forgot, I
asked pardon for you, and I prayed Him that He would repeat His Lessons. And
He, in order to content Me, because He does not know how to deny anything to
His Mama, repeated His Beautiful Lessons to you.
“My daughter, I am always with Jesus, however at times I hide in Him and
it seems that He does everything as if He were without Me, instead I am within, I
concur there together, and I am aware of what He does. Other times, He hides in
His Mama, and He makes Me act by Myself, but He is always concurrent together
with Me. Other times We both unveil Ourselves together, and the souls see the
Mother and the Son who Love them so much, according to the circumstances and
the good they ask for, and many times it is the Love that We cannot contain that
makes Us give in Excesses towards them. But be certain that if My Son is there, I
am; and that if I am, My Son is. It is a task that was given to Me by the Supreme
Being that I cannot, nor do I want to, get out of. More so, because these are the
Joys of My Maternity, the fruits of My Sorrows, the Glory of the Kingdom that I
possess, the Will and the Accomplishment of the Sacrosanct Trinity.”

MAY TENDER MOTHER ‘S MONTH

“Hold fast to the traditions that we have taught you,
both by word of mouth and by letter.”
 -2 Thess. 2:15

Volume 24; August 15, 1928
Our Lord:  “This is why Her Maternity is extended to all, and all can boast and say:  ‘The Mother of Jesus is my Mother, and this Mother so Sweet, Lovable, Loving, gives Her Beloved Son to each one of us as pledge of Her Maternal Love.’  Only My Will could give Her this Virtue of conceiving all creatures as Her children, and of multiplying Her Jesus so many times for as many children as She had.”

3/25 THE FEAST OF THE ANNUNCIATION

3/25 The Feast of the Annunciation

The Annunciation

The First Joyful Mystery of the Rosary.  Tomorrow the Church celebrates that day when the Archangel Gabriel requested Our Lady to be the Mother of God.  Mary accepts and declares Herself to be the handmaid of the Lord.

The Annunciation is one of the three most ancient feasts of Our Lady.  The feast probably dates from the Council of Ephesus in 431, when Our Lady was proclaimed the Mother of God.  This proclamation was because of a heresy which denied Mary’s Divine Motherhood.  It was also the Council of Ephesus which added the following words to the Hail Mary:  “Holy Mary Mother of God, pray focus sinners now and at the hour of our death, Amen.”

This feast has been known by many names over the years, including:  the Feast of the Incarnation,” “the beginning of the Redemption,” “the Conception of Christ” and “the Announcing of the Christ.”

– Significance of March 25th: Adam and Eve each being created; the passing of Israel through the Red Sea; the sacrifice of Isaac by his father Abraham; St. John the Baptist’s beheading; Jesus Died on Good Friday March 25th – The day that Mary took her Son’s Body into Her Arms beneath the Cross is the same day that She had taken His Body into Her Womb at the Annunciation; Feast of the Good Thief, St. Dismas, as Jesus Promised him from the Cross “today you will be with me in Paradise”; Our Lady Announced to St. Bernadette at Lourdes that She is “The Immaculate Conception.”

Day Nineteen – The Virgin Mary in the Kingdom of the Divine Will.

Now, My daughter, listen to Me: I continued My Life in Nazareth; the Divine Fiat continued to expand Its Kingdom within Me. It used My littlest acts, even the most indifferent ones—such as keeping the little house in order, starting the fire, sweeping, and all the tasks that are usually done in the families—to let Me feel Its Life Palpitating in the fire, in the water, in the food, in the air I breathed— in everything. And Investing them, It formed over my little acts Seas of Light, of Grace, of Sanctity; because wherever It Reigns, the Divine Will has the Power to form, from little trifles, New Heavens of Enchanting Beauty. In fact, being Immense, It does not know how to do small things, but with Its Power It gives Value to trifles, and makes of them the Greatest Things, such as to Astonish Heaven and earth. Everything is Holy, everything is Sacred, for the one who Lives of Divine Will.

Now, daughter of My Heart, pay attention to Me and listen: several days before the descent of the Eternal Word upon earth, I could see Heaven opened and the Sun of the Divine Word at Its doors, as though to look out for the one upon whom He was to take His Flight, to render Himself Celestial Prisoner of a creature. O! How Beautiful it was to see Him at the doors of Heaven, as though on the lookout, and to spy the fortunate creature who was to host Her Creator!

The Sacrosanct Trinity no longer looked at the earth as alien to Them, because there was little Mary who, by possessing the Divine Will, had formed the Divine Kingdom in which He could descend safely, as in His own Dwelling, in which He would find Heaven and the many suns of the many Acts of Divine Will done in My Soul. The Divinity Overflowed with Love, and removing the Mantle of Justice which, for so many centuries, They had kept with creatures, They covered Themselves with the Mantle of Infinite Mercy, and decreed among Themselves the Descent of the Word, and were in the Act of sounding the Hour of the Fulfillment. At this sound, Heaven and earth were Astounded, and all stood at attention, to be spectators of such a Great Excess of Love, and a Prodigy so unheard-of.

Your Mama felt Ignited with Love, and echoing the Love of My Creator, I wanted to form one single Sea of Love, so that the Word might descend upon earth within it. My Prayers were Incessant, and while I was praying in my little room, an Angel came, sent from Heaven as messenger of the Great King. He came before Me, and bowing, he hailed Me: “Hail, O Mary, our Queen; the Divine Fiat has filled You with Grace. He has already pronounced His Fiat— that He wants to descend; He is already behind my shoulders, but He wants Your Fiat to form the Fulfillment of His Fiat.”

At such a great announcement, so much desired by Me— although I had never thought I would be the chosen one—I was stupefied and hesitated one instant. But the Angel of the Lord told Me: “Do not fear, our Queen, for You have found Grace before God. You have Conquered Your Creator; therefore, to complete the Victory—pronounce Your Fiat.”

I pronounced My Fiat, and—O! Marvel—the two Fiats fused together and the Divine Word descended into Me. My Fiat, which was Endowed with same Value as the Divine Fiat, from the Seed of My humanity, formed the tiny little Humanity which was to enclose the Word; and the Great Prodigy of the Incarnation was accomplished.

O! Power of the Supreme Fiat—You raised Me so high as to render Me Powerful, to the point of being able to create within Me that Humanity which was to enclose the Eternal Word, whom Heaven and earth could not contain. The heavens were shaken, and all Creation assumed the attitude of Feast; and exulting with Joy, they peeked over the little house of Nazareth, to give homages and obsequies to the Creator made Man; and in their mute language, they said: “O! Prodigy of prodigies, which only a God could do. Immensity has made itself little, Power has rendered Itself powerless, His Unreachable Height has lowered itself deep into the abyss of the womb of a Virgin, and at the same time, He is little and Immense, Powerful and powerless, Strong and weak.”

My dear daughter, you cannot comprehend what your Mama experienced in the Act of the Incarnation of the Word. All pressed upon Me and awaited My Fiat, I could say, Omnipotent.

Now, dear daughter, listen to Me: how much you should take to heart doing the Divine Will and Living of It. My Power still exists— let Me pronounce My Fiat over your soul. But in order to do this, I want your own. A True Good cannot be done with one alone, but the Greatest Works are always done between two. God Himself did not want to do it on His own, but wanted Me together with Him to form the Great Prodigy of the Incarnation; and in My Fiat and in His, the Life of the Man-God was formed, the destiny of mankind was restored, Heaven was no longer closed; all Goods were enclosed between the two Fiats. Therefore, let us pronounce them together: “Fiat! Fiat!” and My Maternal Love will enclose in you the Life of the Divine Will.

Day Twenty The Virgin Mary in the Kingdom of the Divine Will.

My dear daughter, today I await you more than ever. My Maternal Heart is swollen; I feel the need to pour out My Ardent Love with My daughter: I want to say to you that I am the Mother of Jesus. My Joys are Infinite; Seas of Happiness inundate Me. I can say: I am the Mother of Jesus; His creature, His handmaid, is Mother of Jesus—and I owe this only to the Fiat. It rendered Me Full of Grace, It prepared the Worthy Dwelling for My Creator. Therefore, always Glory, Honor and Thanksgiving be to the Supreme Fiat.

Now listen to Me, daughter of My Heart: as soon as the Little Humanity of Jesus was formed in My Womb by the Power of the Divine Fiat, the Sun of the Eternal Word Incarnated Himself in It. I had My Heaven, formed by the Fiat, all studded with Most Refulgent Stars that glittered with Joys, Beatitudes, Harmonies of Divine Beauty; and the Sun of the Eternal Word, Blazing with Inaccessible Light, came to take His Place within this Heaven, hidden in His Little Humanity. And since His Little Humanity could not contain Him, the Center of this Sun remained in It, but Its Light Overflowed outside, and Investing Heaven and earth, It reached every heart. And with Its Pounding of Light, It knocked at each creature, and with Voices of Penetrating Light, It said to them:

“My children, open to Me; give Me a place in your heart. I have descended from Heaven to earth in order to form My Life in each one of you. My Mother is the Center in which I reside, and all My children will be the circumference, in which I want to form so many of My Lives for as many as are My children.” And the Light knocked and knocked again, without ever ceasing; and the Little Humanity of Jesus moaned, cried, agonized, and within that Light which reached into the hearts, He made flow His Tears, His Moans and His Pangs of Love and of Sorrow.

Now, you must know that a New Life began for your Mama. I was aware of everything that My Son was doing. I saw Him devoured by seas of Flames of Love; each one of His Heartbeats, Breaths and Pains were Seas of Love that He unleashed, enveloping all creatures to make them His own by Force of Love and of Sorrow. In fact, you must know that as His Little Humanity was Conceived, He Conceived all the Pains He was to suffer, up to the last day of His Life. He enclosed all souls within Himself, because, as God, no one could escape Him. His Immensity enclosed all creatures, His All-seeingness made them all present to Him. Therefore, My Jesus, My Son, felt the weight and the burden of all the sins of each creature. And I, your Mama, followed Him in everything, and felt within My Maternal Heart the New Generation of the Pains of My Jesus, and the New Generation of all the souls whom, as Mother, together with Jesus I was to Generate to Grace, to Light, to the New Life which My Dear Son came to bring upon earth.

My daughter, you must know that from the moment I was Conceived, I Loved you as Mother, I felt you in My Heart, I Burned with Love for you, but I did not understand why. The Divine Fiat made me do facts, but kept the Secret hidden from Me. But as He Incarnated Himself, He revealed the Secret to Me, and I comprehended the Fecundity of My Maternity—that I was to be not only Mother of Jesus, but Mother of All; and this Maternity was to be formed on the stake of Sorrow and of Love. My daughter, how much I have Loved you, and I Love you.

Now listen to Me, dear daughter—what extent one can reach when the Divine Will takes Operating Life in the creature, and the human will lets It Work without impeding Its Step. This Fiat, which by Nature Possesses the Generative Virtue, Generates all Goods in the creature; It renders her Fecund, giving her Maternity over all, over all Goods, and over He who created her. Maternity says and means True Love, Heroic Love, Love that is content with dying to give Life to the one It has Generated. If this is not there, the word maternity is sterile, is empty, and is reduced to words, but does not exist with facts. Therefore, if you, My daughter, want the Generation of all Goods, let the Fiat take Operating Life in you, which will give you the Maternity, and you will Love everyone with Love of Mother. And I, your Mama, will teach you how to fecundate in you this Maternity, all Holy and Divine.

NOTES:

The Annunciation to Mary by the angel Gabriel that she was to be the Mother of God (Luke, 1), the Word being made fiesh through the power of the Holy Spirit. The feast of the Annunciation, called also in old calendars the feast of the Incarnation, is celebrated 25 March. It probably originated about the time of the Council of Ephesus, c.431, and is first mentioned in the Sacramentary of Pope Gelasius (died 496).

“Astonishingly, the starting point for dating the birth of Christ was March 25. As far as I know, the most ancient reference to it is in the writings of the African ecclesiastical author Tertullian (c. 150-c. 207), who evidently assumes as a well-known tradition that Christ suffered death on March 25. In Gaul, right up to the sixth century, this was kept as the immovable date of Easter. In a work on the calculation of the date of Easter, written in A.D. 243, and also emanating from Africa, we find March 25 interpreted as the day of the world’s creation, and, in connection with that, we find a very peculiar dating for the birth of Christ. According to the account of creation in Genesis 1, the sun was created on the fourth day, that is, on March 28. This day should, therefore, be regarded as the day of Christ’s birth, as the rising of the true sun of history. This idea was altered during the third century, so that the day of Christ’s Passion and the day of his conception were regarded as identical. On March 25 the Church honored both the Annunciation by the angel and the Lord’s conception by the Holy Spirit in the womb of the Virgin. The feast of Christ’s birth on December 25—nine months after March 25—developed in the West in the course of the third century, while the East—probably because of a difference of calendar—at first celebrated January 6 as the birthday of Christ. It may also have been the response to a feast of the birth of the mythical gods observed on this day in Alexandria. The claim used to be made that December 25 developed in opposition to the Mithras myth, or as a Christian response to the cult of the unconquered sun promoted by Roman emperors in the third century in their efforts to establish a new imperial religion. However, these old theories can no longer be sustained. The decisive factor was the connection of creation and Cross, of creation and Christ’s conception.” -Ratzinger, Joseph Cardinal; Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI; The Spirit of the Liturgy (pp. 105-107)

When Leonard Calvert and the Maryland colonists arrived in the New World, England celebrated the beginning of the new year on March 25. The practice of celebrating the new year on the 25th of March dates back to the early medieval period when the Catholic Church established a calendar which recognized a year as beginning in late March with the Feast of the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary (March 25). In England, the Feast of the Annunciation was called Lady’s Day and most legal arrangements, contracts, leases, and such were structured around this date. The calendar year was divided into quarters with religious feast days marking the periods. These feast days were called quarter days. In most of England, the quarter days were Lady’s Day, the Feast of the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary (March 25th); Midsummer Day, the Feast of St. John the Baptist (June 24); Michaelmas, the Feast of the Archangel Michael (September 29); and Christmas, the Feast of the Birth of Jesus (December 25).

Also of note were the cross quarter days which divided each quarter in half.  These include Candlemas, the Feast of the Purification of Mary, (February 2); May Day, the Feast of Sts. Philip and James (May 1); Lamas, the Feast of St. Peter Delivered from Prison (August 2); and All Saints Day, the Feast of All Saints (November 1).  Rents that were due quarterly had to be paid on these days and various other religious and legal activities were timed to these feast days.

When the colonists chose to officially take command of the new land on March 25, while still at St. Clement’s Island, they were picking a day that had considerable symbolism for them and their countrymen. Not only was it the new year, but it was an important religious feast day that celebrated the Roman Catholic commitment to the veneration of Mary. Date choices were not random but instead highly meaningful. We see this in the alignment of the foundations for the brick chapel at St. Mary’s City. Catholic liturgical practice called for churches to be aligned on a true east-west orientation. Evidence of the first Catholic chapel that stood on the site (before the Brick Chapel of 1667, which is being reconstructed) is reflected in burials. However, the Brick Chapel of 1667 is aligned at 11 degrees off of a true east-west orientation as are the human burials associated with it. Why ? There is also a tradition of orienting religious buildings to the rising sun on the feast day of the saint to whom the church is dedicated. Through careful calculation, we have determined that the sun rises directly in line with the church foundations on February 2, Candlemas, which is the feast of the Purification of Mary. Was the brick chapel in St. Mary’s City in the colony of Maryland dedicated to the Virgin Mary? It seems quite likely and on reflection doesn’t seem all that surprising given the Roman Catholic veneration of Mary as a saint.

Three hundred years ago, England refused to accept the Gregorian Calendar as a dreaded Papist creation. So, dates in England were ten days different than most of the rest of Europe in the 17th century. And since the new year was different, March 25 rather than January 1, dates that occurred between January 1 and March 25th were part of the prior year in England while part of the current year in the rest of Europe. This led to the use of year dates that incorporated a slash—so that December 12 would be 1634 while February 14 would be 1634/5 and March 29 would be 1635. These dates are sometimes denoted with the abbreviations O.S. (old style or Julian calendar) or N.S. (new style or Gregorian calendar). All of this confusion ended in 1752 when England finally accepted the Gregorian calendar. By that point, a full 11 days had crept in to the difference between Julian calendar dates and the Gregorian calendar. In 1752, the English Parliament decreed that September 2, 1752 would be followed by September 14, 1752 and that January 1 would be the beginning of the new year. So George Washington was born on February 11th under the Julian calendar which became February 22 under the Gregorian calendar after England and her colonies changed their date reckoning. It must have been difficult for those who were born between September 3 and September 13 in the year 1752 since they got a year older but never had a birthday party!

In addition to being celebrated as a religious feast, for centuries the March 25th “Annunciation Day” was also observed as New Year’s Day by most European countries and the British colonies in America.  This changed in the late 16th century when Roman Catholic nations adopted the Gregorian calendar which returned to the old Roman practice of celebrating New Year’s on January first. Scotland switched to the Gregorian calendar in 1600, followed by Germany, Denmark and Sweden around 1700.  England continued to observe the Annunciation as the beginning of the New Year until 1752 (the change caused the previous year of 1751 to be cut short, losing what would have been the remaining months of January, February, and the first 24 days of March).  Source:  “New Year’s Day,” Microsoft® Encarta® Encyclopedia 2000. © 1993-1999

The Annunciation is listed at or near the top of the most frequently depicted subjects in the history of Western art.  In 1887 Rev. I.T. Hecker wrote of the Annunciation:  “Such is the narrative…which has inspired countless tomes of exposition from the pens of doctors, pontiffs, theologians, and has inspired, too, more representations than any other event, unless the Crucifixion, from the hand of Christian masters.”  Source:  “The Annunciation in Art,” Catholic World, Vol. XLV, Apr. 1887, No.265

Pope Francis elected in 2013 (the former Cardinal Bergoglio) is from Argentina, the country that began the movement to declare the March 25 Annunciation feast date as the Day of the Unborn Child in 1998.  As cardinal he wrote the introduction to a book on devotion to the unborn Christ in the womb of Mary (“María , el primer Sagrario” by J. de Mouriño), and spoke on the significance of the Annunciation as Day of the Unborn Child.

In England, this feast day still determines the end of the tax year for income tax payments — April 5, which is March 25th if one subtracts the eleven extra days added with the adoption of the Gregorian calendar.  Until the mid-18th century, England used a version of the Julian calendar, in which the March 25th Annunciation feast was the first day of the civil New Year.

The date of March 25th was chosen by Pope Saint John Paul II to promulgate his 1995 “Evangelium Vitae” (Gospel of Life) upholding the teaching on the sanctity of all human life, especially the unborn.

One beautiful Annunciation custom from Russia is to release white pigeons or doves (symbolic of the Holy Spirit) on the feast day to represent the Incarnation’s liberation of humanity.

An ancient practice of the papal curia–the executive office of the Roman Catholic Church — is to use the March 25th Annunciation feast date as the start of the year for all their official documents and communications, adding a designation near the date that reads, “Year of the Incarnation.”  Most civil governments followed suit, using this day to start their New Year, until the adoption of the Gregorian calendar.  Sources:  CatholicCulture.org which cites “The Holyday Book” by Francis X. Weiser, S.J., Harcourt, Brace and Company, Inc., New York, 1956

Pope Saint John Paul II also chose this date of March 25th in 2003 to personally sign and grant a pro-life Apostolic Blessing to the Eucharistic Apostles of The Divine Mercy and all the faithful who join them in reciting the Divine Mercy Chaplet to end abortion, euthanasia, cloning and embryonic stem cell research.  Interestingly, in the papal blessing the feast is referred to by an alternate title similar to the old Latin name “Festum Incarnationis”:  it reads “Solemnity of the Incarnation of The Divine Word.”

In J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Lord of the Rings” the date of March 25th was used symbolically to allude to the central Christian theme of the story — it is the day the ring, representing original sin, is destroyed.  Author Joseph Pearce in his televised April 2011 EWTN special “Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings: A Catholic Worldview” gives a fascinating explanation of the day’s significance both in the fictional trilogy and historical Christendom:  “But now it’s time to reveal the secret that unlocks the fundamentally religious dimension of the whole work.  The fact is, that Tolkien hides a key within the story, a key that once discovered, allows us to unlock the deepest Christian theology at the heart of the drama.  What is the key?  It’s to be found in the date on which Tolkien tells us that the ring is destroyed or unmade.  That date is March the 25th — a date that every Catholic knows is perhaps the most significant and important date on the whole Christian calendar.  March the 25th is the Feast of the Annunciation, the day on which the archangel Gabriel appears to the Blessed Virgin, and more important, it is the day on which Jesus is conceived in his mother’s womb.  It is the day on which the Word is made flesh — the day on which God becomes man.  It is a more important date than Christmas, because life begins at conception, not at birth.  God did not become man at Christmas, but at the Annunciation.  The Incarnation happens at the Annunciation.  It happens on March the 25th — the date on which the ring is destroyed.  And that’s not all.  Many medievals believed that the crucifixion also happened on March the 25th.  Of course, we celebrate Good Friday as a movable feast.  It is celebrated on a different day each year.  But the crucifixion as an historical event happened once on a particular day in history.  That day, so the medievals believed, was March the 25th, thus connecting Christ’s death to his Incarnation.  And what do these two events signify taken together with the Resurrection?  They signify man’s redemption from original sin.  And what is original sin?  It is the one sin to rule them all and in the darkness bind them, just as the one ring is the one ring to rule them all and in the darkness bind them.  The one ring is the same as the one sin, and they’re both destroyed or unmade on the same day — March the 25th.  This is no coincidence, but is the very key that unlocks the deep theology and deepest meaning of the Lord of the Rings…. So Frodo and his loyal companion Samwise Gamgee walk through the Valley of Death to Mount Doom carrying the cross in mythological imitation of Christ himself.  And, as we have seen, the climax on Mt. Doom is united with Christ’s crucifixion on Golgotha through the key date of March the 25th.”  NOTE:  Passages in “The Return of the King” (Part 3 of the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy) also refer to March 25 not only as an important date but as the start of the new year–Tolkien’s selection of March 25 as a New Year’s Day for his fictional world mirrors reality as this date known as Annunciation Day began the New Year in the real world before the adoption of the Gregorian calendar:  In the chapter entitled “The Field of Cormallen” Gandalf tells Sam:  “But in Gondor the New Year will always now begin upon the twenty-fifth of March when Sauron fell, and when you were brought out of the fire to the King.”  Appendix B (The Great Years) also mentions the destruction of the ring and the evil Sauron in the entry for March 25:  “Gollum seizes the Ring and falls in the Cracks of Doom.  Downfall of Barad-dur and passing of Sauron.”  Toward the end of Appendix D (The Calendars) there are several references:  “March 25, the date of the downfall of the Barad-dur….The date was, however, March 25 in both Kings’ and Stewards’ Reckoning….In the New Reckoning the year began on March 25 old style, in commemoration of the fall of Sauron and the deeds of the Ring-bearers….Fourth Age 1 was the year that began according to the New Reckoning in March 25, 3021, old style.”  Tolkien also chose March 25th for a life-affirming event at the end of “The Lord of the Rings.”  Despite the length of the three volumes, in a trilogy centering on war the birth of babies is remarkably absent.  But in the last few pages of the story we find:  “The first of Sam and Rosie’s children was born on the twenty-fifth of March, a date that Sam noted.”

Several hospitals in Hungary announced they would stop aborting children on March 25th and other holy days after an interdenominational group of bishops led by the Alfa Alliance’s Imre Teglasy held prayer vigils outside, placing special emphasis on the March 25th Annunciation and the December 28th feast of the Holy Innocents.

Leo Severino, producer of the pro-life themed film Bella noted the “providential” significance of the film’s milestones coinciding with important religious feast dates.  Severino said that although not planned, Bella’s “first public showing was on the Feast of the Annunciation.”  Quote from October 18, 2007 televised interview with Severino on EWTN’s Life on the Rock

Pope Saint John Paul II specifically chose Nazareth and the March 25th Annunciation feast as the place and time to celebrate the Great Jubilee in 2000 during his week-long pilgrimage to the Holy Land — he did so to bring the message of the Incarnation to the world via celebration of a public Mass and his homily. Several years earlier he had released the document Tertio Millennio Adveniente announcing plans for the Great Jubilee celebrations in the Holy Land and stressing the importance of understanding the Incarnation in preparation for the new millennium.

Most Christians asked where the Incarnation took place would answer incorrectly–citing the place of the Nativity rather than the site of the Annunciation.

The Annunciation is also known as the “Feast of Swallows” in central Europe because the birds return on or near this day every year.  This may be why medieval Europeans thought of swallows as holy birds, taking care not to harm swallows or their nests, and calling them “God’s birds” in Hungary.  In Germany they were called “Mary’s birds”~likewise in Austria, the land that gave birth to a very old rhyme:  “When Gabriel does the message bring, return the swallows, comes the spring.”

Pope Saint John Paul II made the collegial consecration of the world to the Immaculate Heart of the Blessed Virgin Mary on the Feast of the Annunciation/Incarnation on March 25th, 1984 (also known as thConsecration of all Individuals and Peoples of the World to the Immaculate Heart of Mary) and pointedly commented on it in 2004 exactly two decades later when he highlighted the Incarnational import of the selection of this date:  According to a Catholic World News report of March 24, 2004, Pope Saint John Paul II, at his weekly public audience on this eve of the collegial consecration’s 20-year anniversary, began his reflection on that act by reminding those attending that March 25th is the Feast of the Annunciation, which, in his words, “allows us to contemplate the Incarnation of the Eternal Word, made man in Mary’s womb.”

Apparitions in Betania, Venezuela were reported on March 25, 1984–the same day Pope Saint John Paul II consecrated the world to the Immaculate Heart of Mary.  The events were detailed in Ch.17, (pg. 242-260) of “Those Who Saw Her” (1995 Rev. Ed.) by Catherine M. Odell:  At a farmhouse in a town named Betania (meaning Bethany), flowers had been placed to decorate a man-made grotto for the Annunciation feast date gathering, and several times that day over 100 people (including atheists and agnostics) reported seeing an image of Mary (who some saw holding the infant Christ) above a nearby waterfall.  The farm’s owner, Maria Esperanza de Bianchini, from childhood had been having visitations from Mary who at one point told her she would appear to her for the first time at this site on the Annunciation feast–March 25, 1976.  That year she reported the message about the impending March 25th apparition to Bishop Bernal of their diocese who assigned priests to celebrate Mass and Reconciliation there.  One year after that first apparition, on March 25, 1977, Mary again appeared at the farm to 15 people, and later Esperanza learned from Mary that more would see the next March 25 apparition, and that sacramental preparation for the poorest of their community should be accomplished before March 25th–the apparition occurred on the usual Annunciation feast date which in 1978 was also Holy Saturday.  In the early 1980s Mary told Esperanza that many people would see her on March 25, 1984 (which occurred on the same day Pope   Saint John Paul II made the collegial consecration).  That well-documented and investigated apparition (approved by Bishop Pio Ricardo of the Los Teques diocese in 1987) plus the healings and miraculous occurrences that followed drew crowds as large as thirty-thousand people to the little nearby village–on the 25th of each month.

For St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, the first U.S. born person to be canonized a saint, March 25th would figure importantly in her faith journey on several occasions.  After converting to Catholicism she received her first Holy Communion on the March 25th Feast of the Annunciation in 1805.  Then in 1809 she founded the Daughters of Charity and made her first profession of vows on the Annunciation feast day of March 25.  After 1813 she and the Sisters of Charity made their annual vows on the March 25th Annunciation feast date.

Pope Saint John Paul II speaking on the significance of the Incarnation said:  “The most radical and elevating affirmation of the value of every human being was made by the Son of God in his becoming man in the womb of a woman…”  Source:  Christifideles Laici

In 2004 on the March 25th feast of the Annunciation, Cardinal Edward M. Egan of New York established the Sisters of Life as a religious institute (click & scroll halfway down to read more) of diocesan right.  This was done at the direction of the Vatican’s Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life.

An interest in fostering devotion to the unborn Christ child has developed in conjunction with renewed interest in celebrating the Annunciation Feast of Christ’s conception — most often explicitly undertaken as positive approaches toward building a “culture of life.”  The importance of these allied initiatives was highlighted in a televised interview with Mother Agnes Donovan, SV (Superior General of the Sisters of Life) on Fr. Benedict’s Groeschel’s program Sunday Night Live (05/03/09) in which they discussed the importance of devotion to the Annunciation and the Unborn Christ:  Mother Agnes opened the topic when she said, “I’m hoping that in our day, there’ll be a new devotion–a devotion to Jesus unborn–the unborn Jesus in Mary, by way of devotion to the Annunciation of the Lord.  You know we are so in need of a devotion to the Unborn Jesus, I think even just because we need to be reminded that we are precious in the eyes of God before we do anything to make ourselves worthy of his love.  He loves us unborn, silent, unconscious in the womb.  And I really hope that is going to be at least part of the work of the Sisters of Life to bring that devotion forward.”  Fr. Groeschel expressed his agreement, adding, “And that devotion is also linked with the devotion of Our Lady of Guadalupe…and of course the picture of Our Lady of Guadalupe–she’s expecting the Christ Child–that’s the Annunciation.”

At the 2008 Solemn Papal Mass of Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI in Nationals Park, Washington, D.C., the Archbishop of that diocese, Most Rev. Donald W. Wuerl, included the following anecdote concerning the March 25th arrival of Catholic colonists in Maryland in his opening address to the Holy Father:  “Not all that far from here, in 1634, the first Catholics arrived in the colonies that later formed the United States.  The celebration of Mass at St. Clements Island, March 25th 1634, marked the beginning of an unbroken line of continuity in faith and worship that we hope is made manifest is so many ways during your visit with us.”  [March 25th was made a legal holiday in Maryland.]

Mother Angelica, often considered the most influential Catholic woman in the modern U.S., was named after the Annunciation under remarkable circumstances–the feast became her “name-day” and she urged its wider celebration:  The full religious name of Mother Angelica, founder of EWTN Catholic television network, is “Sister Mary Angelica of the Annunciation.”  She explained the personal, religious, and also the pro-life significance of the day on the March 24th 1998 broadcast of Mother Angelica Live (rebroadcast as an episode of Mother Angelica Classics on March 26, 2011)–a show devoted to the topic of the Annunciation:  “Tomorrow is the 25th of March…and it’s the Annunciation.  It happens to be my name-day.  I don’t know how my abbess ever decided on that, but she did.  It’s a very special, special name-day for me, because ordinarily, in an order–religious order, monastic order–your name-day is the feast that your name is.  For example, with Isadore it would be the Feast of St. Isadore.  With mine being Angelica it was supposed to be the feast of the Holy Angels which is in October….But anyway, all she said to me was, ‘I’ve decided that your name-day will be the Annunciation,’ and I thought ‘Wow.’  And the reason I was so surprised and pleased is because I made the consecration to Our Lady, the DeMontfort Consecration, on March 25th, 1942 I think, and I entered in ’44.  It’s a very, very, special, special day for me.  So–tomorrow. So often we kind of omit special days for the simple reason we don’t know they’re special.”  After highlighting the pro-life implications of Christ’s conception (remarking on the fact that the newly-conceived Jesus sanctified the unborn John the Baptist as the angel Gabriel foretold before the conception of John and the Incarnation of Christ) she exhorted the audience:  “So tomorrow, we celebrate that moment….let us rejoice, celebrate somehow; go buy yourself a soda if you can’t do anything else.  Do something!”

Chapter two of Anthony DeStefano’s book “Ten Prayers God Always Says Yes To” cites the Annunciation and Incarnation in Nazareth as the most dramatic example of how even the most profound encounters with God inspire an immediate reaching out toward others rather than a turning inward in what we might naturally expect to be a prolonged period of personal meditation:  “In the history of the world, no one has ever had a more profound encounter with God than Mary did at that moment.  The Gospel says that the Holy Spirit literally ‘overshadowed her’ and that Jesus Christ–the second person of the Holy Trinity–was conceived in her womb.  Now what did Mary do after this experience?  Did she go off on a spiritual retreat?  Did she lock herself in her room and meditate?….She would have been more than justified to take a few weeks to mull things over in her mind, to pray intensely and try to come to grips with the mystery of what had happened to her.  But no, she didn’t do any of these things.  Instead Mary left Nazareth immediately and rushed to the side of her cousin in order to help her.  And she stayed at her side for three months, until Elizabeth’s baby was born.”

The most prominent theory of the origin of April Fool’s Day proposes it as a vestige of the change from the March 25th New Year to January 1st:  In the older tradition March 25th began an eight-day New Year’s celebration extending through April 1st.  When the new calendar was introduced, not everyone wanted New Year’s Day moved to January, and those who insisted on keeping the old New Year and preserving the long celebration of it into the first day of April were called “April Fools”–thus April 1st became April Fool’s Day.

During the course of the 1858 Lourdes apparitions of Mary (approved by the Catholic Church), it was on the March 25th Feast of the Annunciation that “the lady” revealed her identity to the young Bernadette Soubirous (later to become canonized as a saint).  At the request of Pope Pius XII one of the churches built at the site (the Basilica of St. Pius X) was consecrated on March 25, 1958 — one hundred years after the apparitions — by the Patriarch of Venezia, cardinal Angelo Roncalli, the future Pope John XXIII.  Marlene Watkins, foundress of North American Lourdes Volunteers noted that the annual Lourdes pilgrimage season begins on or near March 25th (from interview on the 5/15/2011 EWTN airing of “Sunday Night Prime with Fr. St. Therese of Liseux’s earnestly desired early entrance into religious life (for which she sought a Papal audience in Rome) was finally achieved during the community’s celebration of the Feast of the Annunciation in 1888.  (She had hoped it would happen on the previous Christmas Day, but later realized that many graces came to her in the interim delay.)  The actual date of her entrance into the Carmel convent was April 9th–she notes in the first line of chapter 7 in her autobiography “Story of a Soul,” that the feast was “transferred because of Lent.”  This saint, known as “The Little Flower,” also makes a passing reference in her autobiography to the continuity of Jesus’s pre- and post-natal childhood and Mary’s maternal relationship with Him:  “…Mary had carried Jesus in her arms, having carried Him in her Virginal womb.”  From Chapter 6 of “A Story of a Soul,” 3rd ed., trans. from the original manuscripts by John Clarke, O.C.D.

Writer and philosopher Dr. Alice von Hildebrand offered the following reflection regarding Christ’s Incarnation:  “God in His infinite goodness sent us His son who was incarnated in the womb of a woman.”   She then describes the human womb as “an organ of unbelievable dignity because it has been the cradle of the Son of God for nine months.”  Source:  “Man and Woman: Divine Invention”–2008 series airing on EWTN

“Lives of the Saints:  For Every Day of the Year” points out that the March 25 “Annunciation of Our Lord” is a “double feast” celebrating both the angel’s meeting with Mary and “the Incarnation of the Son of God” on this same occasion.  “On this same day, God the Son, the Second Person of the Blessed Trinity, by the power of the Holy Spirit, assumed a human body and a human soul, and became the Son of Mary.”  Source:  “Lives of the Saints:  For Every Day of the Year–In Accord with the Norms and Principles of the New Roman Calendar” [Imprimatur] — Rev. of the Original Ed. of Rev. Hugo Hoever, S.O.Cist., Ph.D., Catholic Book Pub. Co, N.Y., c. 1974-1955, p. 119 (entry for March 25).

In some countries the Feast of the Annunciation remains a Holy Day of Obligation for Catholics, a status that not only reinforces the centrality of the Incarnation but also the sanctity of human life before birth–a reality underscored by U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops president and Diocese of New York Archbishop Timothy Dolan:  On the 12/19/10 broadcast of EWTN’s “Sunday Night Live” in conversation with Fr. Benedict Groeschel, Archbishop Dolan began by commenting on the “He’s On His Way–Christmas Starts With Christ” graphic showing a sonogram image of an unborn child with a halo.  He said, “You know what I think–what it reminds me Fr. Benedict, when I see that–I’ve always thought that we as a church should celebrate with greater significance the Feast of the Annunciation on March 25th nine months before Christmas–the day that the second person of the most blessed Trinity, the Eternal Word, God the Son, became incarnate, conceived in the womb of the Blessed Virgin Mary.  That really is when our salvation began.  That’s when the Incarnation began–the Word took flesh in the womb of the Blessed Virgin Mary–and we should celebrate that more.  I think in some parts of the world it’s a holy day of obligation is it not?  [Fr. Benedict replies, “Yet it is” and Archbishop Dolan continues:]  “But that wouldn’t be bad to reclaim, would it?  For the whole pro-life movement–that Mary carried the only-begotten Son of God in her womb for nine months.  It’s a powerful feast day.  At Christmas we celebrate the birth, we ought to celebrate the conception with equal fervor….”

On the subject of the Incarnation, Joseph Kung, President of the Cardinal Kung Foundation (dedicated to raising awareness of the persecuted underground Catholic Church in China), said that at Mary’s “Yes” the eternal Son of God had “a new home in his mother’s womb.”  Source:  “Christmas 2013” newsletter, Cardinal Kung Foundation, Stamford, CT.

In 1999 a miraculous event was reported to have occurred in Cochabamba, Bolivia on March 25th of that year.  In the home of Katya Rivas, multicolored crystals were seen to spontaneously appear (and were photographed) on an image of Our Lady of Guadalupe (an image associated with the Annunciation as it depicts Mary pregnant with the unborn Christ).  The mysterious phenomenon was recorded on film because in 1998 reporter Michael Willesee began a documentary entitled “Signs from God — Science Tests Faith” on stigmata of a woman named Katya Rivas.  He and his film crew happened to be there on that Annunciation feast date of March 25th 1999.  Pt. 1 of the video (6:10 min. mark) describes the event:  “This is a simple framed print of Our Lady of Guadalupe. It hangs in Katya’s hallway. But on March 25, 1999 something truly inexplicable occurred. We witnessed and filmed a gathering of thousand of colored crystals on the image bright and exquisite in their artistic formation — and no evidence of the hand of man.”  Also in Pt.1 of “Signs From God–Science Tests Faith” is a quote referencing Christ’s Incarnation in Mary’s womb (at the 8:51 min. mark): “As we continued to visit Katya at her home the artistic glitter on the picture of Mary continued to grow and change. On the third night we noticed part of the image illuminated in the dark. We then bathed the image in a strong television light. The same area lit up into a brilliant phosphorus green. To us, a mystery but to Katya it was simple — A gift from Jesus and a message:  This was the womb of Mary where He became man.

A charming image of a day in the active life of the unborn Christ is painted in one version of the unbiblical offbeat lyric of the Cherry Tree Carol dating back to circa 1400.  In the song’s storyline, when the expectant Mary’s wish for cherries goes unfulfilled, “Jesus intervenes from the womb and the tree bows down to deliver the fruit to the Virgin Mary” at the divine infant’s command.

In 2012, the Annunciation feast was chosen as the day to announce the Vatican’s approval of the publication of the “Rite for the Blessing of a Child in the Womb.”  A LifeNews.com article noted that the blessing, which can be offered both within and outside of Mass, “was prepared to support parents awaiting the birth of their child, to encourage parish prayers for and recognition of the precious gift of the child in the womb, and to foster respect for human life within society.”  On the significance of the date selected for the announcement, the article quoted Cardinal Daniel DiNardo of Galveston-Houston, chairman of the Committee on Pro-Life Activities of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, who said, “I can think of no better day to announce this news than on the feast of the Annunciation, when we remember Mary’s ‘yes’ to God and the incarnation of that child in her the womb that saved the world.”  To read the full article click here.  Source:  Article by Steven Ertelt, “Vatican Approves New Blessing for Unborn Children” reported by LifeNews.com, 3/26/12, Washington, DC.

The companion guide to Mel Gibson’s film The Passion of The Christ, entitled “Guide to the Passion: 100 Questions,” points out in the first few pages the recent reawakening to the significance of the Annunciation as the beginning of Christ’s life–the answer to the “Incarnation” question noted that increasingly the Feast of the Annunciation is being celebrated on March 25th in honor of that most important event of history.

In 2010 growing awareness of the Annunciation’s import reached one of the most controversial arenas of politics via a videotaped press conference with the U.S. Speaker of the House of Representatives:  On July 29th a young reporter (Jane McGrath of CNSnews.com) asked Speaker Nancy Pelosi about what she had publicly stated (at a 5/6/10 Catholic Community Conference on Capitol Hill–read CNSnews.com’s 5/31/10 report “Pelosi Says Her Policies Guided by the Values of Jesus”) was her favorite “Word”–the Word made flesh.  She pointedly asked Ms. Pelosi whether that occurred “at the Annunciation when Jesus was conceived” or at his birth, ending her question with a reference to the right-to-life implications of the self-evident answer.  Click here for 8/2/10 CNSnews.com video report “Pelosi Won’t Say When Jesus Christ Got the Right to Life” or read the August 3, 2010 CNSNews.com report by Jane McGrath entitled “Pelosi Won’t Say When Jesus Got the Right to Life” and the article “At the Annunciation or at the Nativity, Nancy?” (CNA 8/5/10).  The story was reported via many media outlets and blogs, including Fox News and CNSNews.com–the latter did a follow-up article on 12/3/2010 by Terence P. Jeffrey entitled “Michele Bachmann: Jesus Had a Right to Life from the Moment of Conception” that contrasted the pro-life response of U.S. Congresswoman and Republican presidential primary candidate Michele Bachmann to that of Ms. Pelosi when asked the same question [Note:  the link to the follow-up article on Bachmann includes a beautiful depiction of the Annunciation by the 17th Century Spanish artist Bartolomé Esteban Murillo.]  Transcription Source:  Video clips of both the May 6 and July 29, 2010 statements aired toward the end of the August 4, 2010 Glenn Beck program on Fox News, the segment transcribed as follows: (Begin video clips of 5/6/10 speech given by Nancy Pelosi)–“My favorite word is The Word–is The Word–and that is everything–it says it all for us.  And you know the Biblical reference–you know the Gospel reference of The Word…

…We have to give voice to what that means in terms of public policy that would be in keeping with the values of The Word…

…Fill it in with anything you want but of course we know it means ‘the Word was made flesh and dwelt amongst us.’”–(End video clip).  (Beck’s commentary):”…The point is she’s talking about Jesus Christ here.  It’s beautiful and touching and I thought she meant it there for a while until a brave young reporter finally asked her about her ‘favorite word.’  Watch.”  (Begin 7/29/10 clip)–[CNSNews.com correspondent Jane McGrath asking a question of Ms. Pelosi]: “When was The Word made flesh?  Was it at the Annunciation when Jesus was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit as the creed says, or was it at the Nativity when He was born of the Virgin Mary?  And when did The Word get the right to life?”–[Pelosi’s reply]:  “Whenever it was, we bow our heads when we talk about it in church, and that’s where I’d like to talk about that.”–(End video clip).  (Beck comments):  “I’m sorry–what?  You weren’t in church the last time you brought it up.  Nancy, why not address your ‘favorite word?’….Clearly the Speaker was panic-stricken as to define the moment when the Word was made flesh–conception or at birth.  Which is it?  Kind of a good question since The Word defines her policy-making decisions she said later in that same speech–kind of makes it hard to understand her position on abortion.”

The Institute of the Incarnate Word was founded on March 25th, 1984 in Argentina (the country that later began the tradition of celebrating the date as Day of the Unborn Child).  This Catholic men’s religious congregation, also known as “the IVE” from its title in Spanish, “Instituto del Verbo Encarnado” celebrates its anniversary on the Feast of the Annunciation, even when it is moved to a different date.

Although Christians and Muslims have very different understandings of the Annunciation, the fact that both faiths agree that it was an important and blessed event inspired recent efforts in Lebanon to recognize it as an unprecedented joint national holiday for both faiths.  On March 30, 2013 a Lebanon TV channel aired a special on this aspect of the Annunciation entitled:Kitab Edition Speciale – Islamic-Christian National Holiday (Program description: “From the Annunciation to the Resurrection a long path in faith and religion…The 25th of March, Feast of the Annunciation, an Islamic-Christian National Holiday”; thus becoming the first joint formal holiday in the history of these two religions).  The article, “Lebanon: How the Annunciation came to be a joint Muslim-Christian national holiday” (by Marialaura Conte, 29.03.2010) includes an interview with Sheikh Mohamad Nokkari, a Sunni Muslim who began the initiative after discussions with a Christian friend.  A 2/20/10 meeting between Pope Benedict XVI and the Prime Minister of Lebanon in which the matter was to be discussed is mentioned here in the article “Beirut, ‘national’ Islamic-Christian holiday in the name of the Annunciation of Mary” (by Fady Noun, 02/19/2010).  The Catholic News Service article “Lebanese sheik helped get Annunciation recognized as national holiday” (by Doreen Abi Raad, Mar-24-2010) states that Lebanon’s Prime Minister confirmed the decision to approve the holiday at that Vatican meeting.  Click here for the Zenit article “Marian Feast Named Holiday for Muslims, Christians” (By Tony Assaf, March 01, 2010) — toward the end are the remarks of secretary general of the Christian-Muslim Committee for Dialogue Mohammad Al-Sammak on his efforts to help establish the dual-faith holiday.

The Polish Association for Human Life Protection was registered on the 25th of March.  The bottom of the www.pro-life.pl English translation page notes:  “The Polish Association for Human Life Protection was registered on the 25th March” — 25 marca — 25 marzec — “1999 in Local Court in Kraków Civil Department I.”

One of the most famous and affecting depictions of The Annunciation was painted by an American artist — Henry Ossawa Tanner — in 1898 (click here to see the image):  “The Philadelphia Museum of Art…has a magnificent and well articulated Catholic collection…and besides that, there is the most impressive picture of the Annunciation I’ve ever seen in my life, done by America’s first great black artist, Henry Ossawa Tanner–his father was a bishop of the African Methodist-Episcopal Church….Did you ever see the picture of the Annunciation where the archangel is just a shaft of shimmering white light, and the Virgin is sitting there like this, and the appointments of the house are Mexican Indian–the rug, everything–and you say, “Why did he make it look Mexican?”–because if you go back and look at the face, it’s the face of “Our Lady of Guadalupe,” but wearing an expression, a slight expression.  Tanner couldn’t work in this country because of prejudice, and he worked in France–the name of this painting is La Anunciación–and “Our Lady of Guadalupe” was immensely popular among the Catholic intelligentsia before the First World War.”  Source:  Side 2 of Tape 3 (entitled, “Why You Should Be Hopeful”) of the four tape set “Exposing the Real Church Scandal” [talk given by Fr. Benedict Groeschel] published by Crisis (www.CrisisMagazine.com).  Note:  The work’s alternate French title is, L’Annunciation.

For the first time on March 26th, 2011 a simultaneous pro-life march was held in four Romanian cities:  Bucharest, Timisoara, Satu Mare, and Falticeni.  All the prominent Christian denominations were represented to show solidarity on the issue~the featured banner read, “United for Life and Christian Family,” at this gathering of mostly teenage participants.  HLI Mission Report No. 319 July 2011 p.7 (Human Life International)

The Fleur-de-lis (Fleur de lys) symbol is often associated with and used in depictions of the Annunciation.   The symbol is thought to be based on the shape of the lily (which often represents the purity, and therefore the Virgin Mary as well) and is also associated with the angel Gabriel in Annunciation art.

Several religious orders have been named for the Annunciation (Annunciades, Celestial Annunciades, Annunciates Of Lombardy, and Annunziata (mostly women religious except for the last of the four, which includes men as well).  There is also a charitable “Archconfraternity of the Annunciation” in Rome dating back to the 1400s that has raised money for poor young women who want to marry or enter religious life (at one time in history the Pope presided over their annual ceremonies on March 25th presenting the award certificate).

One of the chivalric orders of knights was named for and dedicated to the Annunciation.  The “Order of the Most Holy Annunciation” has its origins in the 1300s, making it the second most ancient of the surviving royal collar orders.  The collar badge of the order depicts the Annunciation and is worn on the feast day.

8/22 QUEENSHIP of the BLESSED VIRGIN MARY

8/22 Queenship of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Mary’s Queenship is first based on her maternal relationship with Jesus. The ancient Hebraic notion of the Queen Mother applies to Mary as Mother of the Messianic King, Jesus Christ. In ancient Israel, the most important woman in the monarchy was generally the queen mother, not the queen. In the southern kingdom of Judah, the kings’ wives were apparently never “queens.” It was the queen mother (Hebrew, gebira or “Great Lady”), the king’s mother, who was honored and who wielded authority as a counselor to the king.

Kings 2:19 “Then he sat down upon his throne, and a throne was provided for the king’s mother, who sat at his right.”

Psalm 45:9 the Queen Mother standing at the king’s right hand, arrayed in gold.

Hebrews 1:8-9 applies this psalm to Jesus as Messianic King. By extension, Psalm 45:9 would then apply prophetically to the Messianic King’s Mother, Mary.

He (Jesus) said to them, ‘Very well; you shall drink my cup, but as for seats at my right hand and my left, these are not mine to grant; they belong to those to whom they have been allotted by my Father.’ Matthew 20:23

The Lord declared to my Lord, take your seat at my right hand, till I have made your enemies your footstoolMatthew 22:44 {Psalm 110:1 – [Of David Psalm] Yahweh declared to my Lord, ‘Take your seat at my right hand, till I have made your enemies your footstool.’}

The two supports of Jesus in Gethsemani.  (Our Lady on the His right, the Servant of God Luisa Piccarrta on His left)

I was keeping company with my Jesus who was agonizing in the Garden of Gethsemani, and as much as I could, I compassionated Him, I pressed Him tightly to my heart, trying to wipe His mortal sweats. And my sorrowful Jesus, with faint and expiring voice, told me: “My daughter, my agony in the garden was hard and painful, maybe more painful than that of the Cross. In fact, if that was the fulfillment and the triumph over all, here in the garden it was the beginning, and sufferings are felt more at the beginning than when they are ended. But in this agony the most harrowing pain was when all sins came before Me, one by one. My Humanity comprehended all their enormity, and each crime carried the mark, ‘Death to a God’, armed with sword to kill Me! Before the Divinity, sin appeared to Me as so very horrifying and more horrible than death itself. Just in comprehending what sin means, I felt I was dying – and I did really die. I cried out to the Father, but He was inexorable. Not even one was there to help Me, so as not to let Me die. I cried out to all creatures to have pity on Me – but in vain. So, my Humanity languished, and I was about to receive the last blow of death.

But do you know who prevented the execution and sustained my Humanity from dying? The first was my inseparable Mama. In hearing Me ask for help, She flew to my side and sustained Me; and I leaned my right arm on Her. Almost dying, I looked at Her, and I found in Her the immensity of my Will intact, without ever a break between my Will and hers. My Will is Life, and since the Will of the Father was immovable and death was coming to Me from creatures, another Creature, who enclosed the Life of my Will, gave Me Life. And here is my Mama who, in the portent of my Will, conceived Me and gave Me birth in time, now giving Me Life for the second time to let Me accomplish the work of Redemption.

Then I looked to my left, and I found the Little Daughter of my Will. I found you (Luisa Piccarreta) as the first, followed by the other daughters of my Will. Since I wanted my Mama with Me as the first link of Mercy, through which we were to open the doors to all creatures, I wanted to lean my right arm on Her. And I wanted you as the first link of Justice, to prevent It from unloading Itself upon all creatures as they deserve; therefore I wanted to lean my left arm on you, so that you might sustain It together with Me.

With these two supports I felt life come back to Me, and as if I had not suffered anything, with firm step, I went to meet my enemies. In all the pains that I suffered during my Passion, many of which were capable of giving Me death, these two supports never left Me. And when they saw Me nearly dying, with my own Will which they contained, they sustained Me, as though giving Me many sips of life. Oh, prodigies of my Will! Who can ever count them and calculate their value? This is why I love so much one who lives in my Will: I recognize my portrait in her, my noble features; I feel my own breath, my voice; and if I did not love her I would defraud Myself. I would be like a father without offspring, without the noble cortege of his court, and without the crown of his children. And if I did not have the offspring, the court and the crown, how could I call Myself a King? My Kingdom is formed by those who live in my Will, and from this Kingdom, I choose the Mother, the Queen, the children, the ministers, the army, the people. I am everything for them, and they are all for Me.” . . .

The mission of the Divine Will reproduces on earth the image of the Most Holy Trinity.

After writing what is written above, I began to do the adoration to my Crucified Jesus, fusing all of myself in His Most Holy Will; and my beloved Jesus came out from within my interior, and placing His Most Holy Will close to mine, all tenderness, told me: “My daughter, did you write everything on the mission of my Will?”

And I: ‘Yes, yes, I wrote everything.’

And He, again: “What if I told you that you did not write everything? Rather, you have left out the most essential thing. So, continue to write, and add: ‘The mission of my Will will conceal the Most Holy Trinity upon earth. Just as in Heaven there are the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, inseparable but distinct among themselves, Who form all the beatitude of Heaven, in the same way, on earth there will be three persons who, because of their missions, will be distinct and inseparable among themselves: the Virgin, with Her Maternity which conceals the Paternity of the Celestial Father and encloses His power in order to fulfill Her mission of Mother of the Eternal Word and Co-Redemptrix of mankind; my Humanity, for the mission of Redeemer, which was enclosed in the Divinity of the Word, without ever separating from the Father and from the Holy Spirit, in order to manifest my celestial wisdom, adding the bond of becoming inseparable from my Mama; and you (Luisa Piccarreta), for the mission of my Will, as the Holy Spirit will display His Love in you, manifesting to you His secrets, the prodigies of my Will, the goods It contains, in order to make happy those who will give themselves to knowing how much good this Supreme Will contains, to love It and to let It reign in their midst, offering their souls to let It dwell within their hearts, that It may be able to form Its Life in them.

The Virgin Mary in the Kingdom of the Divine Will
Day Thirty-One

The Queen of Love:

Blessed daughter, how content I am. I could not decide to narrate to you My Departure for Heaven if I did not leave My daughter safe on earth, Endowed with Divine Will. But know that from Heaven I will not leave you—I will not leave you orphan; I will Guide you in everything, and from your smallest need, up to the greatest—call Me, and immediately I will Come to you to Act as your Mama.

Now, dear daughter, listen to Me. I was already infirm with Love. The Divine Fiat, in order to console the Apostles, and also Myself, allowed almost in a Prodigious Way that all the Apostles, except one, would surround Me like a crown at the moment I was about to depart for Heaven. All felt a blow to their hearts, and cried bitterly. I consoled them all; I entrusted to them, in a special way, the nascent Holy Church, and I imparted My Maternal Blessing to all, leaving in their hearts, by virtue of it, the Paternity of Love toward souls. My Dear Son did nothing but come and go from Heaven; He could no longer be without His Mama. And as I gave My last breath of Pure Love in the Endlessness of the Divine Will, My Son received Me in His arms and took Me to Heaven, in the midst of the Angelic Choirs that sang Praise to their Queen. I can say that Heaven emptied Itself to come to meet Me. All celebrated for Me, and in looking at Me, remained Enraptured and said in chorus: “Who is She, who comes from the exile, all cleaving to Her Lord—All Beautiful, All Holy, with the Scepter of Queen? And Her Greatness is such that the Heavens have lowered themselves to receive Her. No other creature has entered these Celestial Regions so Adorned and Striking—so Powerful as to hold Supremacy over everything.”

Now, My daughter, do you want to know who She is—for whom the whole of Heaven sings Praise and remains Enraptured? I am She who never did Her own will. The Divine Will Abounded so much with Me as to Extend Heavens More Beautiful, Suns More Refulgent, Seas of Beauty, of Love, of Sanctity, such that I could give Light to all, Love and Sanctity to all, and Enclose everything and everyone within My Heaven. It was the Work of the Divine Will Operating in Me that had accomplished such a Great Prodigy; I was the only creature entering Heaven, who had Done the Divine Will on earth As It is Done in Heaven, and who had formed Its Kingdom in My Soul. Now, in looking at Me, the whole Celestial Court was Amazed, because as they looked at Me, they found Me Heaven; and returning to look at Me, they found Me Sun; and unable to remove their gaze from Me, looking at Me more deeply, they saw Me Sea, and found in Me also the most clear earth of My humanity, with the Most Beautiful Flowerings. And, Enraptured, they exclaimed: “How Beautiful She is! She has everything Centralized within Herself—She lacks nothing. Among all the Works of Her Creator, She is the only Complete Work of the whole Creation.”

Now, blessed daughter, you must know that this was the First Feast made in Heaven for the Divine Will, which had worked so many Prodigies in Its creature. So, at My Entrance into Heaven, the whole Celestial Court celebrated that which, Beautiful and Great, the Divine Fiat can Operate in the creature. Since then, these Feasts have never been repeated, and this is why your Mama Loves so much that the Divine Will Reign in souls in an Absolute Way: to give It the field in order to let It repeat Its Great Prodigies and Its Marvelous Feasts.
